Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that the victim is a logged-in user holding the smw-admin right with an active session in the browser, AND that the specific maintenance feature being targeted (e.g. table schema setup via action=updatetables, entity disposal, or job enqueue/stop) is enabled in the wiki. The attacker is unauthenticated but cannot act directly: they must get the admin to visit an attacker-controlled page or follow a crafted link (UI:P), at which point the admin's session cookie supplies authority automatically. The root condition is in SpecialAdmin::execute(), which writes the current user's valid getEditToken() into wpEditToken before dispatch, and in handlers such as TableSchemaTaskHandler::handleRequest() that perform state-changing operations without a POST or matchEditToken() check. Limiting factors: no self-service attacker access (a privileged victim is mandatory), the targeted feature must be enabled, and the admin's browser must send the request with session credentials to a reachable wiki instance.

Impact

This is a genuine but bounded risk, not a drop-everything emergency. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 7.1 with AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P, and the impact profile is integrity-and-availability only (VI:L/VA:H, VC:N) - this is a CSRF (CWE-352) that causes destructive semantic-data changes, schema disruption, and resource exhaustion, NOT confidentiality loss or remote code execution. The PR:N reflects that the attacker needs no account of their own, but exploitation is gated by UI:P plus two real prerequisites from the advisory: the victim must already be an authenticated smw-admin and the targeted maintenance feature must be enabled. Signals are partly conflicting and partly missing: no EPSS score was provided, so statistical exploitation likelihood cannot be assessed; the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no confirmed active exploitation; and the proof of concept in the GHSA advisory is explicitly source-predicted (derived from source review, 'not executed against a live wiki'), so it is a PoC reference rather than verified working exploit code. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a real but non-emergency priority. Net: a high-CVSS issue whose real-world risk is moderate and conditional - dangerous for exposed admin workflows, but limited by the requirement that a logged-in smw-admin be socially engineered into visiting a malicious page.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker sends an authenticated Semantic MediaWiki administrator (smw-admin) a link or embeds an auto-loading request in a web page or email; when the admin's browser visits it, the victim's session cookie is automatically attached to a cross-origin request to Special:SMWAdmin (e.g. action=updatetables). Because SpecialAdmin::execute() overwrites the request's wpEditToken with a freshly generated valid token before dispatch, the maintenance handler runs store->setup() or a job action with no effective CSRF check, triggering schema setup, entity disposal, or job enqueue/stop. A public PoC reference exists in the GHSA advisory but it is source-predicted and not verified as working exploit code, and exploitation still requires the victim to be an authenticated admin with the relevant feature enabled.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026

Cross-site request forgery in Semantic MediaWiki's Special:SMWAdmin page allows an attacker to drive destructive maintenance actions - table schema setup (action=updatetables), entity disposal, and job enqueue or stop - through the browser session of a logged-in user holding the smw-admin right, producing semantic data loss, schema disruption and resource exhaustion. The flaw covers releases from 3.0.0 before 7.3.1; the vendor advisory confirms 7.3.0 and 7.3.1-alpha at revision 61805acbab50e2ffd4f75ebbb23ee9695c191fb8, with the corrected package composer/mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki fixed in 7.3.1. Exploitation is not self-service: the attacker is unauthenticated but must lure a privileged administrator to a malicious page while the targeted maintenance feature is enabled, so the practical exposure is bounded; the advisory publishes a source-predicted PoC HTTP request (not verified as working exploit code), no active exploitation is confirmed (not in CISA KEV), and the priority call for this CVE is patch within this week.

RemediationAI

Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to 7.3.1, which is the fixed release for the Composer package composer/mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki (vulnerable range >= 3.0.0, < 7.3.1); patch status is vendor-confirmed and the advisory is at https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-7f7v-2qf4-gfq3, with a VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/semantic-mediawiki-3.0.0-before-7.3.1-csrf-via-special-smwadmin-maintenance-actions. If a site modifies the extension in place, the vendor's code-level fix is to stop overwriting request-supplied CSRF tokens in SpecialAdmin::execute(), require POST for state-changing actions, and enforce matchEditToken() in one centralized dispatcher or in every action handler before performing the operation. Until the upgrade is deployed, the exposure follows directly from the advisory's prerequisites: only trusted accounts should hold the smw-admin right, and the targeted Special:SMWAdmin maintenance features (table schema setup, entity disposal, job enqueue/stop) should remain disabled, accepting the trade-off that routine schema updates and job maintenance must be postponed. No patched release is documented for the narrower 7.3.1-alpha revision history checked upstream, so confirm your exact revision against the advisory before assuming a rebuild is safe.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Semantic MediaWiki is a MediaWiki extension that adds semantic annotations and a query/store layer on top of MediaWiki's page storage. MediaWiki protects state-changing operations with an edit token (wpEditToken, validated via matchEditToken()), and special pages are expected to enforce POST plus token validation before mutating state. Here the root cause is CWE-352: SpecialAdmin::execute() (src/MediaWiki/Specials/SpecialAdmin.php:75-84,146-154) overwrites the request-supplied wpEditToken with $this->getUser()->getEditToken() - a freshly generated valid token - before dispatching the requested maintenance action, which defeats handler-side token validation by construction. Individual handlers compound this: TableSchemaTaskHandler::handleRequest() (src/MediaWiki/Specials/Admin/Maintenance/TableSchemaTaskHandler.php:93-166) accepts action=updatetables without a POST requirement or a token check and calls store->setup(), and other maintenance handlers enqueue or stop jobs through the same dispatcher. The supplied CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H) reflects an unauthenticated network attacker who needs user interaction and obtains low integrity impact but high availability impact on the wiki's semantic store; the CVSS 4.0 vector scores 7.1 with UI:P and the same availability-dominant profile.

DescriptionCVE.org

Semantic MediaWiki from 3.0.0 before 7.3.1 contains a cross-site request forgery vulnerability in Special:SMWAdmin because it overwrites the wpEditToken with a freshly generated valid token. Attackers can lure an authenticated smw-admin user to a malicious page that triggers schema setup, entity-disposal, or job actions, causing semantic data loss and resource exhaustion.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

CVE-2026-116880 is a high-severity cross-site request forgery flaw in the Semantic MediaWiki extension (versions 3.0.0 through 7.3.0) that allows an attacker to trick a logged-in administrator into executing destructive maintenance actions, resulting in semantic data loss, schema disruption, and resource exhaustion. Although exploitation requires the victim to hold the smw-admin right and visit a malicious page with the maintenance feature enabled, a successful attack could corrupt or destroy critical semantic data and disrupt wiki operations. Business impact is medium given the prerequisite conditions and absence of confirmed active exploitation, but the potential for irreversible data loss warrants prioritized remediation.
