MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker needs permission to edit a page that will be parsed (a low-privilege editor account suffices; no SMW administrator right is required). The exact trigger is a #set_recurring_event parser function call supplying a large caller-controlled limit parameter WITH the end date omitted - in that no-end branch the configured smwgMaxNumRecurringEvents cap is never consulted, so the loop runs to the attacker's count (e.g. limit=2000 yields 2001 subobjects against a default max of 500). Affected: SemanticMediaWiki >=2.5.0 before 7.3.1 (runtime-confirmed 7.3.0 through 7.3.1-alpha). Limiting factors: requires edit rights on a parsed page, so PR:N applies only where anonymous editing is enabled; where editing requires a registered account the realistic privilege is PR:L; impact is availability only, with no data disclosure or modification. |
| Impact | This is a server-side availability-only flaw (CWE-770/CWE-400). The input CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VA:H, score 8.7) rates it High, driven entirely by VA:H with no confidentiality or integrity impact. However, the PR:N (unauthenticated) metric conflicts with the mechanism: both the description ('low-privilege editors') and the GHSA advisory state the attacker needs permission to edit a parsed page, and the advisory explicitly scores it PR:L (6.5) with PR:N (7.5) applying ONLY if anonymous editing is enabled - so the official 8.7 assumes an anonymous-edit configuration. Treat authentication as configuration-dependent, not unauthenticated by default. No EPSS score is provided and the CVE is not in CISA KEV, so there is no signal of widespread or active exploitation; a working proof-of-concept is embedded in the GHSA advisory (with observed output: generated=2001 against a configured max of 500) but has not been verified as a standalone published exploit. The vuln.today Decision label is 'this_week', consistent with a patchable, repeatable DoS rather than an emergency. Net: a genuine but availability-limited priority - remediate this week - whose real-world severity depends heavily on whether anonymous or low-trust editing is permitted on the wiki. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user with ordinary page-edit rights (or any anonymous user, if anonymous editing is enabled) saves a page containing a #set_recurring_event parser function with a large limit value and no end date; because smwgMaxNumRecurringEvents is only enforced in the end-date branch, the parser generates thousands-to-millions of date subobjects in a single parse, exhausting CPU, memory, parser-cache, semantic-store, and database resources. The GHSA advisory includes a working PoC that produced 2,001 subobjects against a 500 ceiling and a ~10s parse at limit=2000 in an isolated fixture; the cost scales directly with the attacker-controlled count and can be repeated. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Semantic MediaWiki 2.5.0 through 7.3.0 lets an editor with ordinary page-edit permission exhaust server CPU, memory and the semantic store by calling the #set_recurring_event parser function with a large caller-controlled limit parameter and no end date, causing the parser to build thousands or millions of date subobjects in a single parse because the smwgMaxNumRecurringEvents ceiling is only enforced in the end-date branch. Exploitation requires the ability to save or render a page that will be parsed - an authenticated editor under the assessed CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, 6.5), rising to unauthenticated if the wiki has anonymous editing enabled (PR:N, 7.5); the CVE record carries a CVSS v4.0 score of 8.7 with PR:N, which reflects that anonymous-editing configuration. There is no CISA KEV entry and no confirmed active exploitation; the upstream advisory includes a bounded proof-of-concept that was run only against an isolated fixture, and impact is availability only with no data disclosure or modification.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to 7.3.1 or later, which is the vendor-released fixed version for this issue and applies the clamp min((int)$value, $this->maxNumRecurringEvents) from commit 215599f0fc03274fd4cee9ba0f7162f5a38c031b (see https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-vxrm-2g9f-2vqh); sites that cannot upgrade immediately can backport that one-line change to RecurringEvents.php and add the accompanying regression test. Be aware that lowering smwgMaxNumRecurringEvents alone does not remediate the flaw, because the setting is never consulted in the no-end-date branch - the effective control must clamp limit itself. Practical compensating controls while patching: restrict page-edit and page-save rights to trusted groups and disable anonymous editing, which removes the PR:N path and limits the attacker pool at the cost of wiki openness; or deploy an AbuseFilter/spam-blacklist rule that rejects #set_recurring_event invocations containing large limit values or omitting end, at the cost of possible false positives against legitimate large recurrence definitions. Review existing pages containing #set_recurring_event without an end parameter for oversized generated subobject counts, and monitor parser-cache growth, semantic-store write volume and job-queue backlogs for signs of repeated abuse. Patch availability is recorded as 'available from vendor'; ENISA EUVD tracks this as EUVD-2026-110705 and NVD as CVE-2026-116877.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Semantic MediaWiki registers the #set_recurring_event parser function through ParserFunctionFactory::newRecurringEventsParserFunction(), which injects smwgDefaultNumRecurringEvents (default 100) and smwgMaxNumRecurringEvents (default 500) into the SMW\Utils\RecurringEvents helper in src/Utils/RecurringEvents.php. In parse(), the caller-supplied limit parameter is written straight into defaultNumRecurringEvents as (int)$value, and the loop-termination logic applies maxNumRecurringEvents only inside the branch where an end date is present; when end is omitted the loop runs until the attacker-controlled count is reached. This is CWE-770 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption; the upstream advisory files it as CWE-400), so the flaw class is resource exhaustion rather than memory corruption or injection: each iteration constructs a date value and a semantic subobject, and the resulting work scales directly with the supplied limit across PHP worker time, parser-cache size, semantic-store writes and job-queue/DB load. A test run on MediaWiki 1.43.6 / PHP 8.1.34 / SMW 7.3.1-alpha with limit=2000 produced 2001 dates against a configured maximum of 500 (four times the documented cap plus the loop's inclusive extra iteration), and a bounded parse fixture took roughly 0.90s at limit=100 versus 10.16s at limit=2000. The upstream fix (commit 215599f0fc03274fd4cee9ba0f7162f5a38c031b) simply changes the assignment to min((int)$value, $this->maxNumRecurringEvents) and adds a regression test asserting that limit above the maximum is capped when no end date is supplied. Note that the trigger only manifests when the end parameter is omitted, and the advisory notes earlier releases in the submitted range were not independently runtime-tested; runtime confirmation covered 7.3.0 through the 7.3.1-alpha revision.
