MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the Semantic MediaWiki extension at an affected version (7.3.0 through 7.3.1-alpha) to be installed, an account holding the wiki-wide 'edit' right, and a valid CSRF token. The attacker supplies a fully caller-controlled serialized 'subject' parameter naming a page they are not authorized to edit; no non-default SMW setting beyond the standard smwtask update task exposure is needed. Limiting factors: the caller must hold the 'edit' right and present a CSRF token (on hardened wikis this requires an account, though on wikis permitting anonymous editing the 'edit' right - and thus the attack - is available to anonymous users per the patch commentary); and impact is bounded to forced reparsing, semantic-store writes, cache invalidation, and expensive dependency work, not to altering the protected page's wikitext content. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The provided CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.9 (Medium) driven by VI:L and VA:L with VC:N - the impact is integrity of the semantic store and targeted resource consumption, not data disclosure or code execution. No EPSS score was provided and the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, so there is no evidence of active exploitation; exploitation status is best described as 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis,' though a public PoC reference exists in the GHSA advisory that is not verified as working exploit code (the advisory explicitly states it is source-predicted and 'no live wiki request was made'). The vuln.today decision label is 'this_month,' consistent with a patch-on-normal-cadence rather than drop-everything posture. There is a notable conflict in the signals: the supplied CVSS 4.0 vector carries PR:N (unauthenticated), yet the GHSA advisory states the attacker needs the ordinary 'edit' right plus a CSRF token - verify the authentication precondition with the vendor advisory, since the two sources disagree. The patch commentary partially reconciles this by noting that an anonymous caller may hold the 'edit' right on wikis configured to allow anonymous editing, which would make PR:N correct only in that specific configuration. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An account holding the ordinary wiki-wide 'edit' right obtains a valid CSRF token and a serialized subject value for a page it is not allowed to edit, then sends a single smwtask update request. The smwtask module authorizes the edit right globally rather than against the named title, so it constructs a FORCED_UPDATE UpdateJob for the restricted page, forcing reparsing and semantic-store writes outside the attacker's authorization boundary. A source-predicted PoC exists in the GHSA advisory; it is not verified as working exploit code. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Semantic MediaWiki 7.3.0 through 7.3.1-alpha fails to authorize the target page in its smwtask update task, letting a caller holding the wiki-wide edit right force semantic updates on arbitrary page titles. The caller supplies a serialized subject that is deserialized and passed to a forced UpdateJob without a title-level edit check, so the task can trigger reparsing, semantic-store writes, cache invalidation and expensive dependency work on pages outside the caller's authorization boundary; on wikis that permit anonymous editing, anonymous users may hold that edit right. A safe proof-of-concept request is documented in the vendor advisory but is a staged verification recipe, not confirmed working exploit code, and no active exploitation is confirmed; this is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a top-tier emergency.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: 7.3.1. Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to 7.3.1 or later, which incorporates commit cba0541d1f931e5c5440a483790dd7c3dec1751d and adds title-level authorization via getAuthorizationSubject()/requestedWorkIsPermitted(), including authorizeWrite('edit', $title) and a whitelist of JobListTask job types. The advisory recommends requiring a server-side binding between the task and the just-completed edit and authorizing the exact title, or requiring smw-admin for direct forced updates. If 7.3.1 cannot be deployed immediately, restrict the smwtask API module to trusted users or groups or require an smw-admin-level permission for direct forced updates (the advisory's fallback), or block requests with action=smwtask at the web tier; these controls stop abuse but disable the legitimate post-edit semantic update path, leaving semantic data to be refreshed by scheduled maintenance jobs. Removing the edit right from untrusted or anonymous groups also reduces exposure where anonymous editing is enabled, though it does not address the missing title-level check. See the advisory at https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-6wrc-864f-6vqp and the fix commit at https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/commit/cba0541d1f931e5c5440a483790dd7c3dec1751d.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Semantic MediaWiki is a MediaWiki extension that stores structured semantic data and uses the smwtask API module to run post-edit maintenance tasks. In 7.3.0 and 7.3.1-alpha, Task.php authorized the caller only against the task's global getRequiredPermission() right; UpdateTask returned 'edit', and process() accepted a fully caller-controlled parameters['subject'], deserialized it into a WikiPage, built an UpdateJob for that title and set UpdateJob::FORCED_UPDATE. No comparison was made with the page that triggered the post-edit request and no title-level authorizeWrite check was performed, a CWE-862 missing authorization flaw (the GHSA also maps CWE-863 incorrect authorization). The commit adds Task::getAuthorizationSubject() and Task::requestedWorkIsPermitted(), makes UpdateTask return its subject, and has the module unserialize the subject, reject invalid DataItem values, and call getAuthority()->authorizeWrite('edit', $title) before running. JobListTask is also constrained to the job types in smwgPostEditUpdate['run-jobs'], preventing callers from selecting arbitrary queued jobs. Impact is bounded to forced reparsing, semantic-store writes, cache invalidation and resource-intensive dependency work; the protected page's wikitext is not altered and there is no confidentiality impact.

DescriptionCVE.org
Semantic MediaWiki from 7.3.0 before 7.3.1 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in the smwtask update task that allows users with edit rights to force semantic updates on arbitrary pages. Attackers can supply a serialized subject parameter for a restricted page to trigger forced reparsing, semantic-store writes, and resource-intensive dependency work.
