MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the optional edit-protection feature enabled via $smwgEditProtectionRight set to a right not held by ordinary users (this feature is DISABLED by default - the single biggest limiting factor). The attacker needs an authenticated editor account able to edit an unprotected page in a semantic-enabled namespace but does NOT need the configured protection right (PR:L). No user interaction by a victim is required. Exploitation is limited to installations that have deliberately turned on this feature; default SMW deployments are not exposed. The impact is a self-inflicted and other-editor lockout (denial of edit/move), not data disclosure. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded integrity/availability risk rather than a top-tier emergency. CVSS 4.0 (7.1, HIGH) and my own assessment agree on AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N with the primary impact on availability (VA:H) - an authenticated low-privilege editor can deny edit/move access to a page indefinitely. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a real-but-not-critical priority. Crucially, exploitation depends on a non-default configuration: $smwgEditProtectionRight must be enabled (it is disabled by default), so the actual exposed population is a subset of SMW installs. No EPSS score was provided and the issue is not in CISA KEV, so there is no signal of widespread automated exploitation; the threat is an insider/low-privilege abuse scenario (any editor) on affected, specifically-configured wikis. Note the input Tag 'Authentication Bypass' conflicts with the evidence - CWE-862 and the advisory describe a missing-authorization (protection) failure, explicitly 'not a read bypass' - so treat the risk as integrity/availability of page-protection state, not credential/authentication circumvention. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a wiki where $smwgEditProtectionRight is enabled, a disgruntled or malicious ordinary editor who lacks the protection right edits any unprotected semantic-enabled page and adds the annotation [[Is edit protected::true]]. When SMW processes the save, EditProtectionUpdater applies indefinite edit and move restrictions at the configured right without checking the author's permissions, locking out other editors and potentially even administrators who do not hold that specific SMW right. No published weaponized exploit code is confirmed, but the GHSA advisory provides complete step-by-step reproduction and a validation harness confirming the unauthorized code path. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Semantic MediaWiki 2.5.0 through 7.3.1-alpha applies annotation-driven page protection without any authorization check, so an ordinary editor who can already edit an unprotected page in a semantic-enabled namespace can add [[Is edit protected::true]] and have indefinite edit and move restrictions imposed at the configured $smwgEditProtectionRight - a right the editor does not hold. The effect is a persistent denial of edit and move to other contributors, potentially including administrators who lack the configured SMW right, rather than any disclosure of data. Exposure is narrow: the feature is disabled by default and only wikis that deliberately enabled $smwgEditProtectionRight are affected, and while the vendor advisory documents an offline, network-isolated PHP harness confirming the updater's behavior, no end-to-end exploit against a live wiki is referenced and there is no KEV listing.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Semantic MediaWiki 7.3.1 - upgrade to 7.3.1 or later (the fix commit is https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/commit/d2a198f42184373bb8604450c46a13a2c28eafa3, detailed in advisory GHSA-9824-67pm-c29j), which gates the restriction update on the author holding the configured editProtectionRight or the generic 'protect' right. If upgrading immediately is not possible, the exposure can be removed entirely by unsetting $smwgEditProtectionRight, since the vulnerable code path only runs when that optional feature is enabled - the trade-off is that data curators lose the annotation-driven protection workflow and must protect sensitive pages through MediaWiki's normal protection interface. Wikis that keep the feature enabled should audit pages carrying the Is edit protected annotation and lift or correct restrictions that were applied by editors who never held the configured right; note that administrators without the configured SMW right may themselves be locked out and require a user with the right (or direct maintenance-script intervention) to restore access, so plan that recovery path before tightening namespace edit permissions.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Semantic MediaWiki stores the wikitext annotation [[Is edit protected::true]] as the semantic property _EDIP. After a page save, src/DataUpdater.php parses the page's semantic data and passes the revision author together with the SemanticData object to src/Protection/EditProtectionUpdater.php; when a true _EDIP value is present, the updater calls WikiPage::doUpdateRestrictions() to apply indefinite 'edit' and 'move' restrictions at the right configured in $smwgEditProtectionRight. MediaWiki's doUpdateRestrictions() performs no authorization of its own, and the updater never verified the author's rights, which is the CWE-862 missing-authorization root cause: the security decision (may this user protect this page?) was delegated to a caller that never made it, leaving a privileged state change reachable from an unprivileged edit. The upstream fix (commit d2a198f42184373bb8604450c46a13a2c28eafa3) inserts a userMayChangeProtection() gate that queries MediaWiki's PermissionManager and only proceeds when the author holds the configured editProtectionRight or the generic 'protect' right, logging and returning early otherwise; accompanying unit tests assert that doUpdateRestrictions() is never invoked for an author without the right. Note the assessed vector is PR:L with no user interaction, and the flaw is purely a lateral-movement style integrity/availability issue within the wiki's protection subsystem, not a read or authentication bypass.

DescriptionCVE.org
Semantic MediaWiki from 2.5.0 before 7.3.1 contains an improper authorization vulnerability that allows ordinary editors to permanently protect pages by adding an Is edit protected annotation. When $smwgEditProtectionRight is enabled, EditProtectionUpdater applies indefinite edit and move restrictions without checking the author's rights, locking other editors and administrators out.
Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-116876 is a high-severity vulnerability in Semantic MediaWiki affecting wikis that have enabled the optional $smwgEditProtectionRight feature. It allows ordinary editors to impose persistent edit and move restrictions on pages, potentially denying access to other contributors, including administrators. Leadership should care because this can disrupt collaborative workflows and content maintenance on affected wikis, though the exposure is limited to a small subset of configurations.
