MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the Special:PropertyLabelSimilarity special page to be reachable by anonymous users, which is the default - the GHSA confirms the special-page constructor sets no restriction and no SMW administrator permission is required. The attacker supplies limit=0 (or a negative value), which the vulnerable getPropertyList() treats as 'no SQL LIMIT', loading the whole property table into the O(n^2) matchLabels()/similar_text() loop. The key LIMITING factor is deployment scale: the advisory states the cost grows quadratically with the number of user-defined properties, so the attack is only meaningfully disruptive on a wiki with a large property pool; on a small property set the request may simply return a normal HTML page. No authentication, user interaction, or special configuration beyond a public wiki is needed, and impact is availability-only. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded availability risk, not a confidentiality/integrity threat. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) confirms remote, unauthenticated, low-complexity reachability with no user interaction, and the vulnerable-availability metric VA:H drives the 8.7 score - this is a pure denial-of-service issue (VC:N/VI:N). The SSVC framework tempers this: Exploitation is rated 'none' (no observed or confirmed exploitation), Technical Impact is only 'partial', while Automatable is 'yes' (the limit=0 request is trivially scriptable and repeatable). There is no EPSS score and no CISA KEV listing in the input, so there is no signal of active or widespread exploitation. The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week' (not act_now/emergency), consistent with a readily-automatable availability bug that is not being exploited. A material caveat: real-world impact is conditional on scale - the GHSA explicitly states the cost grows quadratically with the number of user-defined properties, so a wiki with a small property pool may only return a normal page, while a large pool times out. The advisory's own suggested severity is 'Medium', which is lower than the 8.7 (High) CVSS 4.0 base, reflecting that the worst case depends on deployment size. Net: prioritize patching within the vendor-suggested week for internet-facing SMW wikis with large property pools, but this is not a drop-everything emergency and carries no data-exposure risk. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An anonymous attacker scripts repeated HTTP GET requests to a public wiki's Special:PropertyLabelSimilarity page with limit=0, which disables the SQL LIMIT and forces the backend to load the entire property pool and run pairwise similar_text() comparisons. Because the work is quadratic in the number of user-defined properties, a handful of concurrent requests can saturate PHP CPU and memory and hold database connections, degrading availability for legitimate users. The GHSA includes a safe, source-predicted proof of concept (a single limit=0&threshold=101 request); it is presented as source-review-predicted behavior, not a production stress test. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Semantic MediaWiki before 7.3.1 exposes Special:PropertyLabelSimilarity without an administrator restriction, and a caller-supplied limit of zero or a negative value bypasses the SQL LIMIT, loading the property pool into an O(n^2) pairwise label comparison. Unauthenticated remote attackers can send repeated requests to consume PHP CPU and memory and hold database connections; the impact is availability-only and grows with the number of user-defined properties, so it is most disruptive on large wikis. Active exploitation is not reported (SSVC exploitation: none), and a public proof-of-concept request is documented in the advisory but is not verified as working exploit code.
RemediationAI
Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to 7.3.1, the vendor-released fixed version; the patch commit 15ed8489a4ca142ea5417d0c4403dbbe0a3ee3f5 adds a MAX_LIMIT of 100 and always applies a bounded SQL LIMIT, clamping zero, negative, and oversized limit values. Apply the update from the vendor advisory at https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticMediaWiki/security/advisories/GHSA-wh64-r5x2-vjgf. If immediate upgrade is not possible, implement the advisory's recommended request-level controls: reject zero or negative limit values and clamp positive values to a small server-side maximum before they reach Special:PropertyLabelSimilarity, or temporarily restrict access to that special page; these controls also block or limit legitimate use of the page.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Semantic MediaWiki is a PHP MediaWiki extension. In the vulnerable code path, Special:PropertyLabelSimilarity casts the request's limit parameter and passes it to RequestOptions; PropertyLabelSimilarityLookup::getPropertyList() applies a SQL LIMIT and OFFSET only when the requested limit is greater than zero. A limit of zero or a negative value therefore removes the database bound, and the implementation loads the property rows and compares labels pairwise with similar_text(), producing quadratic work classified as CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) with CWE-834 (Excessive Iteration). The GHSA confirms the special-page constructor sets no restriction, so anonymous users can reach the page by default. The upstream fix adds a MAX_LIMIT constant of 100 and always applies a bounded SQL LIMIT, falling back to MAX_LIMIT for zero, negative, or oversized requests.

DescriptionCVE.org
Semantic MediaWiki from 2.5.0 before 7.3.1 contains an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability that allows anonymous attackers to force quadratic computation by supplying a zero limit to Special:PropertyLabelSimilarity. Attackers can send repeated requests with limit=0 to bypass the SQL LIMIT and trigger pairwise similar_text() comparisons, exhausting PHP CPU, memory, and database connections.
Executive ViewAI
Semantic MediaWiki versions prior to 7.3.1 contain a high-severity availability vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to exhaust server resources on large wikis. This can cause service disruptions, impacting wiki availability for all users and potentially leading to operational downtime. Leadership should prioritize patching to mitigate denial-of-service risks and maintain business continuity.
