| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an account (or anonymous user on wikis allowing anonymous editing) with ordinary page-edit rights; the 'External identifier' property type is user-selectable, so no special privilege beyond editing is needed. The flaw is present in the default configuration - the no-external-formatter-URI error path returns the raw caption - and also when a formatter URI is configured (raw caption as anchor body), so no non-default setup is required. The key limiting factor is passive user interaction (UI:P): a second user must actually view the Special:Browse page for the annotated subject for the payload to fire, and the privilege-escalation concern specifically depends on an administrator viewing that page. Impact is bounded to actions available within the viewer's session under the wiki origin. |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity, low-urgency stored XSS (CWE-79) and the signals are internally consistent rather than conflicting. The CVSS 4.0 input vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:P, score 5.3) describes network reach, low complexity, and the need for victim interaction (UI:P) - a viewer must load the affected Special:Browse page - which caps impact to Low confidentiality/integrity with no availability effect. SSVC reinforces low priority: Exploitation=none (no observed exploitation), Automatable=yes (the inject step is scriptable), Technical Impact=partial. There is no CISA KEV listing, so this is not confirmed actively exploited; vuln.today assigns 'this_month', not act_now/emergency. One nuance on privileges: the CVSS vector encodes PR:N, but the description and advisory state that exploitation requires page-edit rights - PR:N is only accurate on wikis that permit anonymous editing, otherwise a low-privileged authenticated editor is required. EPSS is not provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified. Net: a genuine but not emergency issue - real impact is bounded by required editor access and required victim page views, with the standout concern being that an administrator viewing the crafted Browse page executes the payload in their privileged session. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged editor declares a property of type 'External identifier' and annotates a payload such as [[Eid::<img src=x onerror=alert(document.domain)>]] on a content page. When any other user - potentially an administrator - later visits Special:Browse for that subject, ExternalIdentifierValue emits the caption unescaped and the JavaScript runs in the viewer's authenticated session under the wiki origin. The GHSA advisory includes a step-by-step proof of concept; a public PoC reference exists, though it is not verified in the input as a packaged working exploit. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 28, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting (CWE-79) in Semantic MediaWiki 2.5.0 through 7.3.0 allows any user holding ordinary page-edit rights - or an anonymous editor on wikis that permit anonymous editing - to store a script payload inside a property annotated as an 'External identifier' value, which Special:Browse later emits into the page without escaping. The payload executes in the browser session of any user who views Special:Browse for the annotated subject, including administrators, giving the attacker access to whatever data and actions that viewer's session permits under the wiki origin. No public exploit is flagged as confirmed working and there is no KEV listing or known in-the-wild exploitation; a public PoC reference exists in the upstream advisory but it is not verified as working exploit code, EPSS is not available, and the vendor has released a patch in 7.3.1. Exploitation is bounded by passive user interaction - a second user must actually open the Browse page for the poisoned subject - which keeps the observed CVSS at 5.3 and the priority decision at this_month rather than act_now.
RemediationAI
Upgrade the Semantic MediaWiki extension to 7.3.1 or later, which is the vendor-released patched version per the GHSA advisory and Composer metadata (vulnerable range >= 2.5.0, < 7.3.1); the fix makes the ExternalIdentifierValue HTML method produce escaped output on every return path, so both the no-formatter-URI error branch and the configured-anchor branch are covered - verify the extension version through Special:Version after deployment and re-run any local Composer-managed update process. If upgrading cannot happen immediately, the actionable interim mitigations are: restrict page-edit rights (or disable anonymous editing) so untrusted users cannot store the annotation at all, which costs collaboration openness on public wikis; and restrict who may create or retype properties as 'External identifier', which narrows the attack surface but does not fully close it for wikis with large trusted editor bases. A Content Security Policy that blocks inline event-handler execution would neutralise the demonstrated onerror-style payloads at the browser, at the cost of potentially breaking other legitimate inline scripts in the wiki skin and gadgets. Restricting access to the Special:Browse page to trusted groups reduces who can be triggered, but it degrades a core browsing feature. Because the trigger requires a second user to open the poisoned Browse page, purge or review recently annotated pages whose External identifier values contain markup while the patch is being rolled out.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Semantic MediaWiki is a MediaWiki extension (Composer package mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki) that adds typed semantic annotations to wiki pages and a Special:Browse factbox viewer. Property values are persisted verbatim as a Blob with no tag stripping or HTML encoding, so sanitization must happen at render time. The base StringValueFormatter normally applies smwfXMLContentEncode, but the ExternalIdentifierValue class (SMW\DataValues\ExternalIdentifierValue, present since the 2.5 line) fully reimplements getShortHTMLText - with getLongHTMLText forwarding to it - and never delegates to the base formatter, so that escaping is unreachable. All three branches of the override return raw markup: the no-linker branch returns the raw caption; when no external formatter URI is configured (the default) the URI builder records an error, marks the value invalid, and returns the raw caption; and when a formatter URI is configured it returns an anchor element whose body is the raw caption, escaping only the href attribute. The unescaped string then flows through HtmlBuilder (Html::rawElement span body) into the templates/FactboxProperty.mustache {{{html-values}}} triple-brace field and finally SpecialBrowse::addHTML with no parser or sanitizer in the chain. Because the 'External identifier' type is user-selectable on a property page, no special right is required beyond editing, and the flaw is exploitable in default configuration rather than only with a custom formatter URI.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Semantic MediaWiki from 2.5.0 before 7.3.1 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows users with page-edit rights to inject scripts via External identifier property values. Attackers can annotate markup payloads that ExternalIdentifierValue renders unescaped on Special:Browse, executing JavaScript in viewers' sessions, including administrators.
