| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the iscsiuio daemon (open-iscsi userspace component for iSCSI hardware offload/boot, typically with supported Broadcom NICs) is actually running and processing IPv6 Neighbor Discovery traffic - it is not active on a default server without iSCSI offload configured. The attacker must be on the same Layer 2 network segment as the target (CVSS AV:A), since Neighbor Discovery/ARP operate link-locally; no authentication (PR:N) and no user interaction (UI:N) are needed, and a single minimal Neighbor Advertisement is sufficient (AC:L). The principal limiting factors are therefore network adjacency (no routed/remote reach) and whether iscsiuio is deployed and listening, not any special privilege or victim action. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but bounded network-adjacency risk rather than an internet-wide emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:L, base 7.1) is internally consistent with the description: an attacker 'on the same network segment' (AV:A, not AV:N) can send a single crafted IPv6 Neighbor Advertisement (AC:L, PR:N, UI:N) to poison the ARP table (I:H via traffic redirection) with a secondary out-of-bounds read / crash potential (A:L, C:N). The reporting is from Red Hat and the vuln.today Decision label is 'this_week' - a notable-but-not-top priority. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit were provided in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified from the data; the absence of these signals plus the AV:A adjacency requirement argues against mass, automatable exploitation and points to a localized/insider or compromised-segment threat model. One cross-signal tension worth flagging: the Tags include 'Buffer Overflow' and 'Information Disclosure' while the assigned CWE is CWE-125 (out-of-bounds read) and the primary described impact is integrity (ARP poisoning/MITM), not confidentiality - the vendor set C:N despite the 'Information Disclosure' tag, so treat the tag taxonomy as loose and defer to the CWE/CVSS. Bottom line: real priority for environments where iscsiuio is actually running on exposed L2 segments, lower priority elsewhere. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with a foothold on the same Layer 2 segment (e.g., a compromised host, rogue VM, or malicious device on a storage/iSCSI VLAN) sends a minimal, malformed IPv6 Neighbor Advertisement to a host running iscsiuio. The handler reads the link-layer address option at a fixed offset without checking it exists and unconditionally updates its ARP table with attacker-controlled addresses, enabling ARP cache poisoning and traffic redirection (MITM) while the out-of-bounds read may also leak adjacent memory or crash the daemon. No public exploit was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 23, 2026
ARP/neighbor-table poisoning in the iscsiuio userspace daemon shipped with open-iscsi lets an unauthenticated attacker on the same Layer 2 segment redirect network traffic by sending a single minimal IPv6 Neighbor Advertisement. Affected deployments are those where iscsiuio is actually running for iSCSI hardware offload (typically with supported Broadcom NICs); a default server without iSCSI offload configured is not exposed. The same handler also reads link-layer address options at a fixed offset without confirming the packet carries them, an out-of-bounds read that can leak memory or crash the daemon; no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch was identified at time of analysis; track https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-115486 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2556267 for the errata covering RHEL 6 through 10 and apply the iscsiuio package update as soon as it ships. Because the flaw is only reachable from the same Layer 2 segment and only when the daemon is actively handling Neighbor Discovery, the practical interim control is to stop and disable the iscsiuio service on any host that does not actually use iSCSI hardware offload or iSCSI boot - the trade-off is that offloaded iSCSI sessions and offload-based boot will stop working, so this must be validated against the storage configuration first. Where offload is genuinely required, reduce adjacency instead: place such hosts on dedicated storage VLANs, and enable Dynamic ARP Inspection plus IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Inspection with DHCP/neighbor-binding tables on the access switches so spoofed advertisements from an unauthorized port are dropped - this depends on managed switching and complete binding coverage, and a gap in either leaves the poisoning path open. Neither workaround repairs the underlying out-of-bounds read, so the vendor update remains the complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details
iscsiuio is the open-iscsi userspace helper that services iSCSI hardware offload and boot sessions, handling ARP and IPv6 Neighbor Discovery on behalf of the NIC firmware rather than letting the kernel do it. The flaw is classified CWE-125 (out-of-bounds read): the Neighbor Discovery option parser indexes the target link-layer address option at a fixed offset and does not first verify that the option is present or of the expected length, so a truncated or malformed Neighbor Advertisement causes reads past the received buffer. Separately, the neighbor/ARP table is updated unconditionally from addresses taken directly out of packet headers, without checking that the packet is a legitimate reply corresponding to an outstanding request - the classic precondition for cache poisoning. Because Neighbor Discovery and ARP are link-local protocols, the attack surface is the local broadcast domain only (AV:A), and neither credentials nor victim interaction are needed. The affected code is packaged in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 per the CPE data, and the daemon only processes this traffic when iSCSI offload is configured and the service is active.

Same-segment Neighbor Discovery means AV:A; a single unauthenticated packet gives AC:L/PR:N/UI:N; ARP poisoning yields I:H while the OOB read gives only A:L and no confirmed data return (C:N).

DescriptionNVD
A flaw was found in the iscsiuio component of open-iscsi. The IPv6 Neighbor Discovery handler accesses link-layer address options at a fixed offset without verifying the packet contains them. Additionally, the ARP table is updated unconditionally with attacker-controlled addresses from the packet headers. An attacker on the same network segment can send a minimal Neighbor Advertisement to poison the ARP table and redirect network traffic.
Executive ViewAI
CVE-2026-115486 is a high-severity vulnerability in the iscsiuio userspace daemon of open-iscsi, enabling an unauthenticated attacker on the same Layer 2 network segment to redirect iSCSI traffic via a crafted IPv6 Neighbor Advertisement. Only organizations using iSCSI hardware offload (e.g., with Broadcom NICs) are exposed; default installations without offload are not affected. The lack of a vendor patch and potential for traffic redirection could lead to data breaches or service disruption, warranting immediate leadership attention.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: isolate affected systems on dedicated VLANs with strict Layer 2 access controls; disable IPv6 if not required; consider disabling iSCSI hardware offload or stopping iscsiuio where feasible; monitor for anomalous Neighbor Discovery traffic.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
