| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the FreeRDP proxy to be deployed with FixedTarget=false AND to forward connections through an upstream HTTP proxy; only in this mode is the attacker-influenced routing token target (Cookie: msts=) written into the outgoing CONNECT request line and Host header. The limiting factors are significant: the default/common FixedTarget=true mode and deployments without an upstream HTTP proxy are not affected, and the attacker must be able to control the routing token target. Impact is confined to HTTP request/header framing manipulation at the upstream proxy (integrity only) - no code execution, data disclosure, or availability loss is implied by the data. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely medium-tier issue, not an inflated high-CVSS item - the provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N) scores 6.3 and the impact is limited to low integrity on both the vulnerable system (VI:L) and a subsequent system (SI:L), with no confidentiality or availability effect. The attack is network-reachable and unauthenticated (PR:N), which raises concern, but this is offset by AC:H and AT:P, meaning exploitation depends on a specific non-default deployment (FreeRDP running as a proxy with FixedTarget=false in front of an upstream HTTP proxy) and on the attacker being able to influence the routing token. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was supplied in the intelligence; per precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' There is no SSVC decision data provided. The signals are internally consistent - network vector matches the described remote RDP client connection, and the low/low integrity impact matches an HTTP request/header-smuggling primitive rather than code execution. The main caveat: the real-world exposure is gated entirely by the proxy configuration, so the network vector overstates risk for the overwhelming majority of FreeRDP deployments that do not run the proxy in this mode. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker operates or targets a FreeRDP proxy configured with FixedTarget=false that forwards through an upstream HTTP proxy. As a remote unauthenticated RDP client, the attacker crafts a routing token (Cookie: msts=) whose target portion contains a lone LF, which http_proxy_connect copies unsanitized into the CONNECT request line and Host header, allowing the attacker to split/smuggle HTTP framing at the upstream proxy. No public exploit code was identified in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
HTTP header injection in FreeRDP 3.0.0 through 3.31.x allows a remote unauthenticated RDP client to alter HTTP request framing at an upstream proxy when the FreeRDP proxy is deployed with FixedTarget=false and forwards connections through that proxy. The issue stems from a lone line feed (LF) in the routing token target (Cookie: msts=) that is not rejected and gets written into the CONNECT request line and Host header. The impact is limited to integrity of HTTP requests at the upstream proxy; no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the configuration prerequisites (FixedTarget=false plus an upstream HTTP proxy) constrain exposure.
RemediationAI
Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later; the vendor-released patch is 3.32.0 as indicated by the advisory. If upgrading immediately is not feasible, avoid the vulnerable configuration: set or keep FixedTarget=true (the default), which does not process attacker-controlled routing token targets in this way, or refrain from using an upstream HTTP proxy with the FreeRDP proxy. These mitigations trade off dynamic target routing and HTTP-proxy chaining functionality. Additionally, restrict which clients can supply routing tokens if FixedTarget=false is operationally required, and consider normalizing or rejecting routing token targets containing control characters at the proxy ingress. Consult the vendor advisory at https://github.com/FreeRDP/FreeRDP/security/advisories/GHSA-87v8-2gwr-ww9j for patch details and any further guidance.

Technical ContextAI · show details
FreeRDP is an open-source implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). In its proxy mode, it can forward client connections and, when FixedTarget=false, derives the target from a routing token supplied in the Cookie: msts= header. The http_proxy_connect function then builds a CONNECT request to an upstream HTTP proxy, embedding that target. Because the code fails to reject a lone line feed (LF) in the target portion, an attacker-controlled routing token can inject content into the CONNECT request line and Host header - a CWE-93 (Improper Neutralization of CRLF Sequences / CRLF Injection) instance. This allows modification of HTTP request/header framing at the upstream proxy, such as adding headers or altering request boundaries, but does not yield code execution, data disclosure, or denial of service according to the assessed impact.

Unauthenticated network reach gives PR:N/AV:N, but the non-default proxy config and token control justify AC:H; framing manipulation hits a separate upstream proxy (S:C) with integrity-only impact (I:L).

1DescriptionCVE.org
FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 allows HTTP header injection in its proxy because a lone LF in the target portion of a routing token (Cookie: msts=) is not rejected and is written by http_proxy_connect into the CONNECT request line and Host header. A remote unauthenticated RDP client connecting to a proxy using FixedTarget=false and an upstream HTTP proxy can alter HTTP request/header framing at that upstream proxy.
