MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated client (CVSS PR:L) that has established an RDP session and successfully opened a dynamic virtual channel (DVC) on a FreeRDP server running 2.0.0 up to but not including 3.32.0; the attacker then sends a crafted seven-byte DATA_FIRST message on that DVC declaring an inflated 32-bit length, causing the server to pre-commit a large zeroed resident-memory allocation. Exploitation is LIMITED by the need for valid authentication and an opened DVC - it is not remote-unauthenticated - so exposure depends on who can authenticate to the RDP service; no special non-default configuration or user interaction is otherwise required, and impact is availability-only (memory/resource exhaustion). |
| Impact | This is a moderate-severity, availability-only denial-of-service issue (CWE-400 resource exhaustion), not a code-execution or data-disclosure flaw. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:H, score 7.1) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low complexity, no user interaction, but requiring low-level privileges (PR:L) because the attacker must be an authenticated client that has already established an RDP session and opened a dynamic virtual channel. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the supplied intelligence, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are coherent with no contradictions - the PR:L privilege requirement meaningfully narrows the realistic attacker population to parties who can already authenticate to the RDP service, which lowers real-world priority relative to the 7.1 base score for internet-exposed-but-authenticated servers. Treat this as a patch-in-normal-cycle item unless the FreeRDP server accepts untrusted or low-trust authenticated sessions (e.g. gateway/multi-tenant deployments), where it rises in priority. Note the authentication qualifier is confirmed from the CVSS PR:L metric, not merely inferred from text. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can authenticate to a FreeRDP-based server (version 2.0.0 up to but not including 3.32.0) opens a dynamic virtual channel and sends a single seven-byte DATA_FIRST message declaring a very large 32-bit length. The server pre-commits a correspondingly large zeroed memory buffer, and repeating this exhausts server memory and resources, denying service to legitimate users. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires valid authentication plus an opened DVC. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 15, 2026
Authenticated RDP clients can force unbounded server-side memory allocation in FreeRDP 2.0.0 through 3.31.x by sending a seven-byte DATA_FIRST message on an already-opened dynamic virtual channel (DVC) that declares a large 32-bit length, driving zeroed resident-memory growth until the server's resources are exhausted and service is denied. The flaw is availability-only (CWE-400 resource exhaustion; CVSS 4.0 base 7.1, assessed as CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) with no code execution or data disclosure impact, and every action requires a valid authenticated session plus a successfully opened DVC - so real exposure depends on who can authenticate to the RDP service, and it is not remotely exploitable without credentials. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation (CISA KEV) were identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Primary fix: upgrade to FreeRDP 3.32.0 or later, the first release outside the affected range (vendor-released patch per the 2.0.0-‘before 3.32.0’ advisory range) - see GHSA-5cgr-vmp8-fmvj for the upstream patched builds and distro backports. Because exploitation demands valid credentials and an opened DVC, the most effective compensating controls while patching are access-side: restrict who can authenticate to the FreeRDP RDP listener (network ACLs, VPN-only reachability, mandatory MFA, disabling shared or guest accounts) and, where the deployment does not need dynamic virtual channels, disable or reject DVC channel negotiation in the server configuration or fronting gateway so DRDYNVC traffic never reaches the vulnerable parser - the trade-off being loss of clipboard, audio and other channel-redirection features. Bound and monitor the process with an OS-level cap on address space or resident memory (for example systemd MemoryMax / cgroup limits) and alert on sudden growth in the FreeRDP server process, accepting that hitting the cap will terminate or degrade the session; run the RDP listener as an unprivileged, isolated service account/container so memory exhaustion cannot affect other workloads. Additionally rate-limit or cap concurrent sessions per authenticated user, since the attack is repeatable within a single legitimate session.

Technical ContextAI · show details
FreeRDP is an open-source implementation of the Remote Desktop Protocol used both as a client and as a server component in thin-client, VDI and remote-access stacks. The vulnerable code is in the server-side handling of the Dynamic Virtual Channel Extension (DRDYNVC, defined by MS-RDPEDYC): after a session is authenticated, a client opens a DVC and then sends channel data PDUs. The function wts_read_drdynvc_data_first() parses a DATA_FIRST PDU, whose header carries a 32-bit Length field describing how much payload will follow across the DATA_FIRST and subsequent DATA PDUs. FreeRDP pre-allocates a buffer sized from that declared length without validating it against the data actually received or against any sane cap, so a minimal seven-byte message advertising a multi-gigabyte length causes the server to commit and zero large blocks of resident memory per request. This is a classic CWE-400 uncontrolled resource consumption flaw rather than a memory-safety bug: there is no overflow or corruption, only an attacker-controlled allocation path with no length sanity bound. Because DVCs are a normal, expected part of an RDP session (used for things like audio, clipboard redirection and other static/dynamic channel traffic), the malicious PDU blends into legitimate protocol flow once the channel is open.

2DescriptionCVE.org
FreeRDP from 2.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains a memory exhaustion vulnerability in wts_read_drdynvc_data_first that allows authenticated clients to force servers to commit large memory allocations. Attackers can send a seven-byte DATA_FIRST message on an opened DVC declaring a large 32-bit length, causing zeroed resident memory growth and server resource exhaustion.
Technical POC Analysis
CWE-400 (advisory also scores CWE-770), uncontrolled resource consumption in server-side DRDYNVC handling.

Executive ViewAI
FreeRDP, the open-source Remote Desktop Protocol library used in many remote access gateways, thin clients, and virtual desktop deployments, contains a high-severity memory exhaustion flaw (CVE-2026-110832) affecting versions 2.0.0 through 3.31.x. A user who already holds valid credentials to the RDP service can open a dynamic virtual channel and trigger unbounded server-side memory growth, degrading or taking down remote desktop availability for everyone using that service. Leadership should care because the exposure is a denial-of-service risk to business-critical remote access, and no vendor patch is currently available, meaning mitigation depends on configuration discipline and monitoring.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict RDP service access to trusted networks/VPN and require MFA and least-privilege accounts to limit who can authenticate and open a DVC; disable or restrict dynamic virtual channel support where it is not operationally required; cap process memory and enable automatic restart via systemd MemoryMax, cgroups, or container memory limits so exhaustion is contained; monitor and alert on anomalous resident-memory growth and unexpected RDP service restarts; run affected services in isolated, restartable containers to limit blast radius.
