Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to control code executing inside the deepsec sandbox (the description names a prompt-injected coding agent as the canonical case). With that foothold, the attacker plants symbolic or hard links in the host data directory so they are bundled into a result tarball; the escape occurs only when the orchestrator calls extractTarballLocally, whose unsafe extraction follows those links and writes outside the sandbox onto the orchestrator host. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: (1) attacker must already achieve code/output control within the sandbox; (2) the orchestrator must extract the attacker-influenced result tarball (passive UI); (3) an attack requirement (AT:P) applies - the link-following extraction must succeed; (4) only deepsec versions 0.1.0 through before 1.1.17 are affected - 1.1.17 filters symlinks during archiving/extraction (via the tar ^7.5.13 dependency). Impact is confined to file-write/integrity on the host; no confidentiality or availability impact is described.

Impact

This is a medium-severity (CVSS 4.0 base 4.9) arbitrary-file-write / link-following issue (CWE-59) whose real-world priority is moderate and highly conditional. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:N/UI:P, impact SI:H, all vulnerable-system impacts N) tells a precise story: the damage lands on a SUBSEQUENT system (the orchestrator host) rather than the sandbox itself, impact is integrity-only (no confidentiality or availability), an attack requirement (AT:P) exists, and passive user interaction (UI:P) - the orchestrator extracting a result tarball - is needed. No EPSS score, CISA KEV entry, or public POC was provided, so there is no signal of active or probable exploitation; this reads as a hardening fix in an AI-agent sandbox product, not an urgent in-the-wild threat. The 'RCE' tag overstates the confirmed impact - the CVSS reflects file-write (integrity) only; arbitrary file write on the orchestrator host is a plausible path TO code execution but is not scored or described as confirmed RCE, so treat RCE as a potential escalation, not established fact. The crucial caveat: PR:N understates a real precondition - the attacker must already control code running inside the deepsec sandbox (e.g., a prompt-injected coding agent). That precondition is central to deepsec's threat model (it exists precisely to contain untrusted agent code), which is what makes this a genuine sandbox-escape concern despite the modest numeric score.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can influence the code or output of a coding agent running inside a deepsec sandbox - for example via prompt injection - plants a symbolic or hard link in the sandbox's host data directory so it is captured in the result tarball. When the orchestrator later invokes extractTarballLocally to unpack that tarball, the extraction follows the planted link and writes attacker-chosen files outside the sandbox onto the orchestrator host, escaping containment. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires the orchestrator to extract the attacker-influenced tarball (passive user interaction).

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Arbitrary file write on the orchestrator host affects Vercel deepsec versions 0.1.0 through 1.1.16, where the extractTarballLocally routine in the sandbox download path follows symbolic and hard links planted inside result tarballs. An attacker who already controls code running inside the deepsec sandbox - the canonical case being a prompt-injected coding agent - can plant links in the host data directory so that extraction of the returned tarball writes files outside the sandbox and onto the orchestrator host. The issue is rated medium severity (CVSS 4.0 base 4.9; independent assessment CVSS 3.1 AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:N/I:H/A:N), exploitation is highly conditional (attacker must already hold sandbox code execution, and the extraction must succeed on an attacker-influenced tarball), and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; there is no CISA KEV listing.

RemediationAI

Upgrade deepsec to 1.1.17 or later - vendor-released patch: 1.1.17 - which pins tar to ^7.5.13 and filters symbolic and hard links during both tarball creation and extraction; the fix is captured in upstream commit c5a4e4220ece72aee67c2ea21f4340e65f673fc1 and pull requests vercel-labs/deepsec#46 and #47, with details in the VulnCheck advisory at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/vercel-deepsec-before-1.1.17-arbitrary-file-write-via-symlink-in-sandbox-tarball-extraction. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, treat every result tarball produced inside the sandbox as hostile: refuse to extract them on the orchestrator host (parse or re-archive them with a link-rejecting extractor that strips SymbolicLink/Link entries) - the trade-off is that legitimate builds relying on intra-archive symlinks will break; run the orchestrator under a dedicated low-privilege account in a container with the data directory mounted read-only except for a narrow output path, accepting potential failures for workflows that need broader host write access; restrict the data directory and os.tmpdir() to non-executable, non-configuration locations so a follow-on write cannot be turned into code execution; and avoid granting prompt-injectable coding agents the ability to create files in the host data directory that gets re-archived. None of these compensating controls remove the underlying link-following behavior, so patching to 1.1.17 remains the primary action.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a classic link-following / unsafe archive extraction defect (CWE-59) in Vercel's deepsec agentic sandbox tooling, which builds tarball bundles (makeTarball in the sandbox upload path) and later reconstructs results from them on the trusted side via extractTarballLocally (packages/deepsec/src/sandbox/download.ts). Because the extraction logic did not reject SymbolicLink or hardlink entries in the archive, a process confined to the sandbox could write or place links into the host data directory; when the orchestrator extracted the result tarball, those links were materialized and the write followed them outside the sandbox boundary. The upstream fix pins the archive library to tar ^7.5.13 and adds symlink filtering during archiving and extraction, plus new tests (packages/deepsec/src/__tests__/tarball.test.ts) that assert archives contain no SymbolicLink entries and that sandbox invocations do not leak deepsec-tar-* bundles in os.tmpdir(). Severity framing is consistent across sources: the CVSS 4.0 vector assigns only subsequent-system integrity impact (SI:H) with AT:P attack requirements, and the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment scores S:C/C:N/I:H/A:N, i.e. impact is confined to file-write/integrity on the host with no confidentiality or availability impact described - although VulnCheck tags the advisory as RCE, that reflects the general escalation potential of arbitrary file writes rather than a demonstrated code-execution primitive in this advisory.

DescriptionCVE.org

Vercel deepsec from 0.1.0 before 1.1.17 contains a link following vulnerability in extractTarballLocally that allows sandboxed code to write files outside the sandbox by planting links in result tarballs. Attackers controlling sandbox code, such as a prompt-injected coding agent, can plant symbolic or hard links in the host data directory to write arbitrary files on the orchestrator host.
