| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated backend user who holds at least one valid module/table permission (a low-privileged, non-admin account is sufficient - PR:L), so this is NOT remote-unauthenticated. The specific triggering condition is request-ordering within a single HTTP request: an authorization check for a table the user IS allowed to access must occur before a check for a table the user is NOT allowed to access, because the TableAccessVoter caches the first decision under a key built only from the token hash and omits the table name, causing DefaultDataContainerVoter to convert an abstention into a grant. Limiting factors: valid backend credentials are mandatory; the flaw only affects Contao 5.7.0 through 5.7.11 (fixed in 5.7.12); and it is confined to backend DCA table operations, with the highest-value targets being personal-data tables such as member and newsletter-subscriber records. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-severity access-control flaw, not a high-urgency emergency. The provided CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N, base 4.3) confirms network reachability but requires PR:L - an authenticated, low-privileged backend user - which sharply limits the attacker population to insiders or anyone who has already obtained valid (even minimal) backend credentials. No EPSS score, SSVC decision data, or KEV listing was supplied in the input, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified; exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' (the only code reference is the vendor patch commit, which is a fix, not an exploit). One notable internal conflict: the published CVSS scores only Confidentiality (C:L/I:N/A:N), yet the advisory and description explicitly state the flaw permits create, update, and delete operations on out-of-scope tables - that is a clear integrity (and arguably availability) impact that the vendor vector understates. Treat this as a legitimate privilege-escalation/horizontal-access issue affecting GDPR-relevant data (member and newsletter-subscriber records), prioritized for environments with multiple backend users, but de-prioritized relative to unauthenticated RCE given the authentication barrier and the request-ordering precondition. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged Contao backend user who legitimately has access to one module (e.g. News) crafts or triggers a backend request that first exercises an access check against a table they are allowed to use and then targets a table they are not permitted to use (e.g. tl_member or tl_newsletter_recipients) within the same request lifecycle. Because the voter cached the first 'allowed' decision under a key omitting the table name, the denied table reuses the grant, letting the user read, create, update, or delete member and newsletter-subscriber data outside their module permissions. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, though the one-line caching defect is clearly documented in the patch. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 09, 2026
Improper access control in Contao CMS 5.7.0 through 5.7.11 lets an authenticated, low-privileged backend user read, create, update, or delete records in Data Container tables that fall outside their assigned module permissions - including tables holding member records and newsletter-subscriber e-mail addresses. The root cause is a caching defect in TableAccessVoter, which stores authorization decisions under a key built only from the user's security token and omits the table name returned by getDataSource(), so a decision made for a permitted table can be silently reused for a different, forbidden table within the same request, with DefaultDataContainerVoter able to turn the resulting abstention into a grant. Exploitation requires valid backend credentials and the specific request ordering of an allowed-table check preceding a denied-table check, and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis; the issue is rated moderate severity (vendor CVSS 4.3, assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N).
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: Contao 5.7.12 (composer/contao/core-bundle 5.7.12 or later) - upgrade the core-bundle package to that version or newer, which changes TableAccessVoter's cache key to include the table name ($cacheKey = $tokenHash.' '.$table) and prevents cross-table decision reuse; the release notes are at https://github.com/contao/contao/releases/tag/5.7.12 and the advisory at https://github.com/contao/contao/security/advisories/GHSA-5974-gfqc-wrcm. If upgrading immediately is not possible, the minimal-risk compensating control is to apply the upstream change from commit 9d6f582a4cc6a758ce11d1043fc9c0ba62c5f4c9 directly to the installed core-bundle, accepting that you are carrying an unversioned local patch that may complicate future upgrades. Since exploitation requires an authenticated backend account that already holds at least one valid module/table permission, restricting and auditing backend user accounts reduces exposure: remove stale or non-essential backend users, tighten group membership so that each user is granted only the modules they genuinely need (this reduces, but does not eliminate, the request-ordering precondition), and review Contao's backend logs for unexpected access to tl_member or newsletter-subscriber tables. Disabling unused backend modules is a further trade-off that shrinks the set of tables a low-privileged user can legitimately touch, but it degrades legitimate functionality and does not patch the underlying caching defect.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Contao's backend enforces per-table access control through a chain of Symfony security voters, and the relevant component is TableAccessVoter::hasAccessToModule() in core-bundle/src/Security/Voter/DataContainer/TableAccessVoter.php. To avoid repeated lookups, the voter memoizes results in the shared, request-scoped arrays $canAccessTable and $canReadAccessTable, but the cache key was computed as hash('xxh128', serialize($token)) - a value derived solely from the current user's security token - while the table identifier obtained from $subject->getDataSource() was read but never incorporated into that key. This is an instance of CWE-524 (Use of Cache Containing Sensitive Information): an authorization decision for one resource is reused for a different resource because the cache key lacks resource granularity. When a single request first evaluates a table the user's group is permitted to access and then evaluates a different table the group is not permitted to access, the voter returns the cached allow result; the downstream DefaultDataContainerVoter can then convert an incorrect abstention into an explicit grant, giving the attacker unauthorized DCA-level access to arbitrary backend tables. The upstream fix, commit 9d6f582a4cc6a758ce11d1043fc9c0ba62c5f4c9, builds the cache key as $tokenHash.' '.$table and adds a regression test (testCachesModuleAccessByTokenAndTable) confirming that a denied table check and an allowed table check are no longer conflated. No KEV listing or public proof-of-concept is associated with this CVE at time of analysis.

Authenticated low-privileged backend user gives PR:L; the required allowed-then-denied table check ordering within one request justifies AC:H; create/update/delete on out-of-scope tables adds I:L beyond the vendor's C:L.

1DescriptionCVE.org
Contao is an Open Source CMS. From version 5.7.0 until 5.7.12, TableAccessVoter::hasAccessToModule() in core-bundle/src/Security/Voter/DataContainer/TableAccessVoter.php caches authorization decisions using only $tokenHash, a hash of the user's security token, and omits the table returned by getDataSource(). If one request first checks a table allowed to the user and then a different denied table, the voter can reuse the allowed result, while DefaultDataContainerVoter can convert an incorrect abstention into a grant. A low-privileged backend user can consequently read, create, update, or delete records in tables outside assigned module permissions, including tables containing member or newsletter-subscriber data. This issue is fixed in version 5.7.12.
