| Exploitation Conditions | The attacker must be a Metabase user who has been granted permission to run native (SQL) queries or SQL actions, and the target must be an H2-backed data source - critically, Metabase's default bundled 'sample database' uses H2, so the vulnerable surface exists in default installations without extra configuration. Exploitation is performed by embedding host-facing H2 built-in functions (FILE_READ, FILE_WRITE, CSVREAD, CSVWRITE, LINK_SCHEMA) inside otherwise-ordinary SELECT/CALL statements. Limiting factors: exploitation is gated by the native-query/actions privilege (not available to view-only users), and instances that have removed the H2 sample database and use only non-H2 data sources, or that have upgraded to 1.58.16/1.59.13/1.60.9/1.61.4, are not exposed. |
| Impact | This is a genuine high-priority issue, not an inflated CVSS score. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H) scores 9.3 and describes network-reachable, low-complexity exploitation with high confidentiality and integrity impact - consistent with arbitrary file read/write via H2 built-in functions (FILE_READ, FILE_WRITE, CSVREAD, CSVWRITE, LINK_SCHEMA). CONFLICT: the vendor sets PR:N (unauthenticated), but the description explicitly states 'A user authorized to run native queries or actions' is required, which means some level of privilege/authorization is in fact needed - this should be PR:L rather than PR:N; verify authorization model with vendor. Mitigating the severity somewhat, exploitation requires the native-query/actions permission; aggravating it, Metabase ships a default H2 'sample database', so the vulnerable surface is exposed in default deployments without any extra configuration. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC was provided in the input, so real-world exploitation volume cannot be quantified from available signals; the attack is straightforward to weaponize once a user has native-query access, so absence of a published POC should not be read as low practical risk. Overall: treat as a real, patch-now priority for any internet-exposed or multi-tenant Metabase instance where untrusted users hold native-query/actions rights. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A user who holds native-query or SQL-actions permissions in Metabase targets the default H2 sample database and submits a query such as SELECT FILE_READ('/etc/passwd','UTF-8') or a FILE_WRITE/CSVWRITE call to read or write arbitrary files on the Metabase server host, or uses LINK_SCHEMA to attach other databases. No public exploit was identified in the provided data, but the technique is documented in the vendor advisory and patch, and the required H2 functions are standard, making exploitation trivial for an authorized native-query user. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026
Arbitrary file read and write on the Metabase server is possible through H2-backed native queries and actions in Metabase 1.55.0 up to (but not including) 1.58.16, 1.59.13, 1.60.9, and 1.61.4. An authenticated user who has been granted permission to run native SQL queries or SQL actions can embed host-facing H2 built-in functions such as FILE_READ, FILE_WRITE, CSVREAD, CSVWRITE, and LINK_SCHEMA inside otherwise ordinary SELECT/CALL statements, allowing them to read or overwrite files on the Metabase host or attach external databases; because Metabase's default bundled sample database is H2, this attack surface is present in default installations without any extra configuration. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and the issue is not in CISA KEV, but the fixed versions are published and the vulnerable privilege is a common analyst-level grant, making this a genuine high-priority issue rather than an inflated score.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to Metabase 1.58.16, 1.59.13, 1.60.9, or 1.61.4 (or later), which add the H2 built-in function blocklist to the native query and action paths; the underlying changes are in commits 8fb4f0c8a22f195390b4a1d8f5c21db695ae8cc3, a943448e90e23dbb78001ddedbb15e9c0794473c, abf3fb8427eccefd8d46149cdebe38f3b49f964f, ae60d1cd156d097f084af43a536b3ab60510c9a4, and e231432adcc813a75f3ca4832818bda2d9d265da, with release tags v0.58.15.3, v0.59.12.1, v0.60.8.1, and v0.61.3.4. If immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls in order of effectiveness: revoke native-query and SQL-action permissions from all but a small, trusted set of users (this directly removes the prerequisite, though it degrades legitimate analyst workflows); and remove or detach the bundled H2 sample database so no H2 data source is reachable, which neutralizes the default-exposed surface but leaves any other H2-backed source still vulnerable. Additional hardening: run the Metabase JVM under a least-privilege OS account or container with read-only or narrowly scoped filesystem mounts and no access to credential/config paths, and network-isolate other databases that LINK_SCHEMA could reach - these reduce blast radius but do not by themselves prevent exploit attempts, so patching remains the primary fix. Technical ContextAI · show details
Metabase is an open-source business intelligence and analytics platform written primarily in Clojure, and it supports an embedded H2 database as a first-class data source - including the "sample database" shipped and enabled by default. H2 ships a set of built-in functions that operate on the server environment rather than on query data: FILE_READ and FILE_WRITE touch the local filesystem, CSVREAD and CSVWRITE read and write CSV files, LINK_SCHEMA attaches another JDBC database, and others such as ABORT_SESSION, CANCEL_SESSION, DATABASE_PATH, DB_OBJECT_ID, DB_OBJECT_SQL, MEMORY_FREE, and MEMORY_USED expose session, path, and memory state. The root cause is CWE-73 (External Control of File Name or Path): Metabase's H2 driver passed user-supplied native SQL and action SQL straight to H2 without filtering these host-facing functions, so a query's file path argument was attacker-controlled. Notably, the functions can be embedded inside statements that otherwise look like permitted read-only SELECT or CALL queries, which defeats naive statement-type validation. The upstream fix in src/metabase/driver/h2.clj adds a name-based, case-insensitive regex blocklist (unsupported-builtin-function-regex) and a check-no-unsupported-functions call injected into the read-only statement checks, rejecting any native query or action SQL that mentions these identifiers, including when the name appears inside a string literal or with comments interleaved between the function name and its arguments.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Metabase is an open source business intelligence and analytics platform. From 1.55.0 until 1.58.16, 1.59.13, 1.60.9, and 1.61.4, native queries and actions against an H2 data source are passed through without restricting host-facing built-in functions. A user authorized to run native queries or actions can invoke FILE_READ, FILE_WRITE, CSVREAD, CSVWRITE, or LINK_SCHEMA to read or write arbitrary files on the Metabase server or link other databases. The default sample database uses H2, so the vulnerable surface is exposed by default. This issue is fixed in versions 1.58.16, 1.59.13, 1.60.9, and 1.61.4.

Executive ViewAI
Metabase, a widely used business intelligence platform, contains a critical vulnerability that allows users with native SQL query permissions to read and write arbitrary files on the Metabase server, potentially leading to data exfiltration or system compromise. Default installations are affected because the bundled H2 sample database exposes the necessary functions. Given the common analyst-level grant of SQL permissions, leadership should treat this as a high-priority risk requiring immediate patching and temporary permission restrictions.
Apply vendor patch.
