Exploitation Conditions

Requires an attacker-controlled (malicious or compromised) Docker Sandbox that shares a workspace with the host and can create or replace a symlink within that workspace, plus a subsequent user-initiated sbx cp copy operation that follows the planted symlink. Exploitation is limited by: local attack vector (the attacker must already be executing inside a sandbox); mandatory victim interaction (the copy is user-initiated, UI:A); and the invoking user's own filesystem permissions, which bound which host files can be read or written. It does not apply to deployments that never run untrusted sandbox content or never perform host-side sbx cp copies. Updating to Docker Sandboxes v0.51.0 is the remediation indicated by the vendor release notes.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional local vulnerability, not a remote mass-exploitation threat. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:A) describes local exploitation that is low-complexity and needs no host privileges, but requires active user interaction - the victim must initiate an sbx cp operation after a malicious sandbox has planted or swapped a workspace symlink (CWE-59). Impact is rated high across confidentiality, integrity and availability (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) because the flaw yields both arbitrary host-file reads into the sandbox and sandbox-controlled writes to arbitrary host paths with the invoking user's permissions, with no subsequent-system scope change (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N). The vuln.today decision label is 'this_week', which aligns with a serious-but-not-emergency priority. No CISA KEV listing and no EPSS score are provided in the input, and no public exploit reference is supplied, so exploitation is not confirmed. The main signals are therefore consistent: real integrity/confidentiality/availability impact on the host, gated behind local presence of a malicious sandbox plus a user-triggered copy, which points to targeted abuse of untrusted sandbox workloads rather than broad opportunistic exploitation.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A user runs untrusted or AI-agent-driven code inside a Docker Sandbox. That malicious sandbox creates or replaces a symlink inside the shared workspace pointing outside the workspace; when the user later runs sbx cp, the copy follows the symlink to read a sensitive host file into the sandbox or to overwrite a host file with sandbox-controlled data using the user's permissions. No public exploit identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Nov 03, 2026

Symlink following in Docker Sandboxes' sbx cp command allows a malicious sandbox to redirect a user-initiated copy outside the shared workspace, pulling host files into the sandbox or pushing sandbox-controlled content onto host paths with the invoking user's permissions. All releases prior to v0.51.0 are affected (CPE docker:docker_sandboxes:*), and exploitation is conditional: an attacker must already be running code inside a sandbox that shares a workspace with the host, plant a symlink there, and wait for the user to run sbx cp (UI:R, PR:N, AV:L). Impact is high for confidentiality and integrity but bounded by the invoking user's own filesystem permissions; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV entry, and v0.51.0 strengthens workspace-copy and credential protections per the vendor release notes.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Docker Sandboxes v0.51.0 (https://github.com/docker/sbx-releases/releases/tag/v0.51.0), which the release notes describe as strengthening workspace-copy and credential protections; upgrading is the remediation indicated by the vendor. Plan for the release's breaking changes before rolling out: built-in agent names now resolve to published kits at docker.io/sbx/<name>:latest, the kit.allowExtractedAgents setting is removed, and sandboxes created by earlier releases from embedded Claude or Codex specifications must be recreated before sbx kit add, sbx run --model, or sbx move will work - save files and unpushed commits first. The shell agent moves to a published Debian 13 v3 kit that requires registry access on first use, v1 and v2 kits cannot be combined with v3 kits, and custom secrets without destination hosts no longer substitute credentials until explicit destinations are added. Until the upgrade is complete, the practical compensating control is to avoid running untrusted or compromised sandbox content against a workspace that the host later copies from with sbx cp, and to avoid host-side copies from any workspace writable by such a sandbox; the trade-off is reduced sandbox utility, since the workspace sharing and copy workflow is the feature being protected. Text copy from a local sandbox to the host clipboard now also requires opting in via the clipboard.textCopy setting, which limits a related exfiltration channel at the cost of extra configuration.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The root cause class is CWE-59, improper link resolution before file access. Docker Sandboxes share a workspace directory between the host and the sandbox, and the sbx cp subcommand performs host-side copies into or out of that workspace. Because the host-side path is not confined to the workspace tree, a sandbox process that can create or replace a symlink inside the shared workspace can point it at a host location outside the workspace; when the user later initiates a copy, the link is followed and the read or write lands outside the intended boundary. The result is bidirectional: host files can be drawn into the sandbox, and sandbox-authored data can be written to host paths, in both cases with whatever permission the invoking user holds. The advisory does not describe a race condition or memory-safety component; the trigger is the planted link plus the subsequent user copy. The supplied vectors differ in scoring system but agree on substance: the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment is AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (8.4-class severity, unchanged scope), while the CVE record carries a CVSS 4.0 vector with AT:N and no subsequent-system impact (SC:N/SI:N/SA:N), consistent with a flaw bounded by the invoking user's privileges. The vendor's v0.51.0 release notes explicitly group strengthened workspace-copy protections with credential and clipboard hardening, which is where the fix lands.

DescriptionCVE.org

Docker Sandboxes sbx cp does not safely confine host-side paths to a shared workspace. A malicious sandbox can create or replace a workspace symlink so that a later user-initiated copy reads a host file outside the workspace into the sandbox or writes sandbox-controlled data to a host path outside the workspace with the invoking user's permissions.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Docker Sandboxes prior to v0.51.0 contain a symlink-following flaw in the sbx cp command that lets a compromised sandbox redirect copies initiated by a developer, exposing host files to the sandbox or writing sandbox-controlled content onto host paths with the developer's own permissions. Only users running Docker Sandboxes with a shared workspace are affected, and successful abuse requires an attacker who already controls code inside the sandbox plus a user action. Leadership should care because developer endpoints hold source code, credentials, and access to internal repositories, and this flaw erodes the sandbox boundary those endpoints rely on.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis; interim mitigations: stop running sbx cp against untrusted or shared sandbox workspaces, avoid sharing workspaces with sandboxes running untrusted code, limit the invoking user's filesystem permissions on developer endpoints, and monitor for anomalous file copies while planning the v0.51.0 upgrade.
