| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the target n8n instance has a workflow using the Webflow Trigger node, which exposes the unauthenticated webhook endpoint whose x-webflow-signature HMAC is not verified. No authentication, user interaction, or special attacker privileges are needed (PR:N/UI:N), and default behavior of the affected node versions is vulnerable. The key limiting factor is deployment-specific: instances without a Webflow Trigger node are not exposed at all, and the attacker must be able to reach the webhook URL (typically an internet-facing n8n). Impact is bounded to whatever downstream actions the triggered workflow performs - integrity only, no direct data read or service outage. |
| Impact | Moderate, integrity-focused risk. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) correctly reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw requiring no user interaction - the webhook endpoint is designed to receive external POSTs, so there is no authentication gate. However, impact is deliberately narrow: VC:N/VI:L/VA:N means only a low integrity impact (forged workflow triggers), with no confidentiality or availability loss, which is why the score lands at 6.9 (medium) rather than critical despite being unauthenticated and remote. My independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (~5.3, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N) agrees directionally; the gap from the 6.9 is the usual framework difference, not a dispute. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code are present in the data, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis' - not active exploitation. The real-world priority is tempered by the hard precondition that a Webflow Trigger node must be deployed in an active workflow; absent that node, the endpoint does not exist. This is a legitimate fix-in-maintenance-window issue, not an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who knows or discovers the n8n Webflow Trigger webhook URL (which is unauthenticated and the signature check is skipped) crafts a forged HTTP POST mimicking a Webflow event with attacker-chosen payload data. Because the x-webflow-signature HMAC is never verified, n8n accepts the forgery and executes the downstream workflow - creating bogus records, firing outbound API calls, or otherwise driving automation the attacker does not control legitimately. No exploit code is published, but the attack is trivial to script given a known endpoint. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 01, 2026
Unauthenticated attackers can forge webhook requests to n8n instances that run the Webflow Trigger node, because the handler fails to validate the x-webflow-signature HMAC (CWE-347), letting workflows be triggered with attacker-controlled payloads. Affected releases are all versions before 1.123.80, the 2.x line from 2.0.0 up to but not including 2.39.6, and 2.40.0 up to but not including 2.40.1, with fixes released as 1.123.80, 2.39.6, and 2.40.1. Impact is integrity-only and bounded by whatever the triggered workflow does downstream; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, the flaw is not confirmed actively exploited (not in CISA KEV), and exploitation requires an internet-reachable Webflow Trigger webhook endpoint.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to the fixed release for the deployed branch - n8n 1.123.80 for the 1.x line, 2.39.6 for the 2.x line, or 2.40.1 for the 2.40.x line - as documented in the vendor advisory GHSA-hwv9-jhc7-f7c4 and the VulnCheck advisory. If upgrading immediately is not possible, remove or disable any workflow that uses the Webflow Trigger node, which eliminates the exposed endpoint entirely (side effect: loss of Webflow-triggered automation), or keep the node active but restrict the webhook URL with network controls or an authenticating reverse proxy limited to legitimate Webflow source ranges (trade-off: extra configuration and possible breakage of legitimate deliveries). Enabling signing on the Webflow side does not compensate while n8n-side verification is missing, so upgrading remains the primary fix. Because patching does not undo workflows already fired by forged requests, review recent n8n execution history for unexpected Webflow Trigger runs and audit downstream actions such as record creation or outbound API calls; note that patch availability is confirmed by the vendor ("Available from vendor"), and upgrading is preferable to the disable/restrict workarounds above.

Technical ContextAI · show details
n8n is a workflow automation platform whose nodes expose webhook endpoints, and the Webflow Trigger node is specifically designed to accept incoming webhooks from Webflow and authenticate them with an HMAC over the request body carried in the x-webflow-signature header. CWE-347 (Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature) is the root cause: the handler never recomputes or compares the HMAC, so the signature check is effectively absent and the node trusts any request body it receives. Because these endpoints are built for external, unauthenticated delivery (the assessed vector has PR:N and UI:N), any remote party who knows or guesses the webhook URL can post arbitrary JSON with a forged or missing signature. The affected component is tracked by CPE cpe:2.3:a:n8n-io:n8n:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* across the affected release lines, and per the authoritative assessment the consequence is confined to the integrity of downstream workflow actions - such as record creation or outbound API calls - rather than direct confidentiality loss or service outage.

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
n8n versions before 1.123.80, from 2.0.0 before 2.39.6, and from 2.40.0 before 2.40.1 fail to verify the x-webflow-signature HMAC in the Webflow Trigger node webhook handler. Unauthenticated attackers can send forged webhook requests with attacker-controlled payloads to trigger workflows and manipulate downstream actions like record creation or API calls.
