Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that 'ssl-proxy' is explicitly configured on the SRX platform - this is a non-default deployment mode, so devices without SSL proxy are not affected. The fault is reached only during a TLS session-resumption attempt when a specifically malformed TLS message is processed by the SSL plugin. A key limiting factor is that the exact internal timing required to trigger the invalid pointer access is outside the attacker's direct control (reflected as AT:P in the CVSS 4.0 vector), making exploitation probabilistic rather than reliably repeatable. Impact is limited to a temporary, self-recovering PFE crash (traffic-forwarding outage) with no confidentiality or integrity impact. No authentication or user interaction is required (PR:N/UI:N).

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional priority. The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.2 is driven by network vector (AV:N), low attack complexity (AC:L), no privileges (PR:N/unauthenticated), no user interaction (UI:N), and high availability impact to the vulnerable system (VA:H) plus low subsequent-system availability impact (SA:L, reflecting loss of traffic forwarding). Critically, the vector includes AT:P (Attack Requirements: Present), which aligns with the description's statement that 'the exact internal timing to trigger this issue is outside the attacker's direct control' - meaning exploitation is probabilistic rather than deterministic, lowering real-world reliability. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or POC is present in the provided data: exploitation status is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The impact is a self-recovering PFE crash (temporary DoS, auto-recovery) rather than persistent compromise or code execution (VC:N/VI:N), so this is availability-only. The most important limiting factor not captured by the raw score is that ssl-proxy must be explicitly configured - a non-default condition - so only a subset of SRX deployments are exposed. Net: patch promptly where ssl-proxy is in use, but the AT:P timing dependency and lack of any exploitation evidence make this lower-urgency than the 8.2 alone suggests.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An unauthenticated attacker on a network path to an SRX firewall running ssl-proxy initiates or interacts with a TLS session and, during a session-resumption attempt, sends a specifically malformed TLS message. This triggers an invalid pointer access that crashes the Packet Forwarding Engine, causing a temporary loss of traffic forwarding until the PFE automatically recovers; repeated attempts could be used to induce recurring outages. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the internal timing needed to trigger the fault is not directly controllable by the attacker.

AnalysisAIv2 – Oct 14, 2026

A network-based, unauthenticated attacker can cause a temporary denial of service on Juniper Networks SRX Series devices running Junos OS when the SSL proxy feature is enabled. During a TLS session-resumption attempt, a specifically malformed TLS message triggers an improper handling of a missing special element in the SSL plugin, leading to an invalid pointer access and a Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) crash that interrupts traffic forwarding until the PFE automatically recovers. Exploitation is conditional: it requires the non-default 'ssl-proxy' configuration, and the exact internal timing needed to hit the fault is outside the attacker's direct control, making the attack probabilistic rather than reliably repeatable; no public exploit identified at time of analysis and there is no impact to confidentiality or integrity, only availability. Vendor-released patches are available in the fixed Junos OS releases listed in advisory JSA112176.

v1 Oct 14, 2026 - 17:05 CVSS 5.9

Malformed TLS session-resumption messages can trigger an invalid pointer access and crash the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) on Juniper Networks SRX Series devices running Junos OS with the 'ssl-proxy' feature enabled, producing a temporary denial of service until the PFE automatically recovers. Only deployments where ssl-proxy is explicitly configured are exposed, and exploitation requires a TLS resumption attempt with a specifically crafted message whose internal timing is outside the attacker's control, making the condition race-like rather than deterministic. The vulnerability is network-based and unauthenticated (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, score 5.9), affects availability only with automatic recovery, and at time of analysis no public exploit code has been identified and there is no CISA KEV confirmation of active exploitation.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released patches from Juniper advisory JSA112176 (https://supportportal.juniper.net/JSA112176), upgrading to the fixed Junos OS releases: 23.2R2-S5 or later, 23.4R2-S5 or later, 24.2R2-S2 or later, and 24.4R2 or later. Where upgrading is not immediately possible, the most effective compensating control is to remove the exposure surface by disabling the 'ssl-proxy' configuration on SRX platforms where it is not essential, since the vulnerable code path is unreachable without it; the trade-off is loss of SSL/TLS proxy inspection or proxying functionality for the affected traffic. If ssl-proxy must remain enabled, consider restricting the traffic reachable to the SSL proxy with zone-based policies so that only trusted networks can initiate TLS sessions toward it, and, where the platform permits, disabling TLS session resumption so that resumption-path parsing is never exercised - this increases CPU cost and handshake latency for full TLS negotiations but removes the trigger condition. Note that the resulting PFE crash is temporary and self-recovering, so these controls are hardening measures to avoid repeated forwarding outages rather than permanent fixes.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability is classified as CWE-166 (Improper Handling of Missing Special Element) in the SSL plugin of Junos OS on SRX Series security platforms. The SSL plugin implements an SSL/TLS proxy that terminates or inspects encrypted sessions; when TLS session resumption is attempted (e.g., session IDs or session tickets), the parser expects a particular special element to be present in the malformed message and fails to handle its absence, resulting in an invalid pointer access in the dataplane. Because the SSL proxy runs in the context of the SRX Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE), this memory-safety fault crashes the PFE and halts traffic forwarding until it self-recovers. The CVSS 4.0 vector carries AT:P (Attack Requirements: Present), reflecting that a pre-existing condition - the 'ssl-proxy' configuration - must exist and that the precise internal timing of the TLS handshake state machine is not attacker-controlled, which is why the independent assessment scores this as CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H rather than a straightforward high-availability loss. The affected product is identified by CPE cpe:2.3:a:juniper_networks:junos_os, with the impact confined to the dataplane of SRX platforms acting as TLS proxies.

DescriptionCVE.org

An Improper Handling of Missing Special Element vulnerability in the SSL plugin of Juniper Networks Junos OS on SRX Series allows a network-based, unauthenticated attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service (DoS).

This issue is will occur when 'ssl-proxy' is configured on SRX platforms and during a TLS session-resumption attempt a specifically malformed TLS message is received. This results in an invalid pointer access and PFE crash which causes a temporary loss of traffic forwarding until the PFE automatically recovers. The exact internal timing to trigger this issue is outside the attacker's direct control.This issue affects Junos OS on SRX Series:

  • All versions before 23.2R2-S5;
  • 23.4 versions before 23.4R2-S5;
  • 24.2 versions before 24.2R2-S2;
  • 24.4 versions before 24.4R2.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Juniper Networks SRX Series devices running Junos OS with the SSL proxy feature enabled are affected by a high-severity denial-of-service vulnerability that can interrupt network traffic forwarding. Organizations relying on these security gateways for critical network infrastructure may experience temporary outages, though exploitation requires a non-default configuration and specific timing, making it probabilistic. A vendor patch is available, so leadership should prioritize remediation to maintain availability.
