Vulnerability Assessment

Weakness
CWE

V15 - Secure Coding and Architecture Length parameter validation
Exploitation Conditions

The device must be configured for BGP EVPN with multicast (e.g., EVPN handling of IGMP/MLD / SMET multicast routes) and must have an active BGP session over which the crafted update is received, because the crash is triggered specifically when rpd attempts to readvertise a malformed EVPN multicast update. This means a plain Junos box without EVPN multicast is not exposed. The principal limiting factor is reachability into the EVPN BGP control plane: the attacker needs a peering relationship or on-path/injection capability for the malformed update to arrive and be readvertised - mitigated in environments that restrict BGP peers, use authenticated/filtered sessions, or do not run EVPN multicast. No user interaction is required, and per the vendor vector no authentication to the device itself is needed once the update can reach it.

Impact

This is a genuine but bounded operational risk. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) rates it 8.7 (High), driven entirely by availability impact (VA:H on the vulnerable system, SA:L on subsequent systems) with zero confidentiality or integrity impact - consistent with a pure denial-of-service crash of the routing protocol daemon (rpd), not code execution. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active or imminent exploitation: exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The signals are consistent rather than conflicting (availability-only impact matches the CWE-130 length-handling crash and the DoS tag), but one nuance must be flagged: although the vector asserts PR:N/AV:N, the description requires that the malformed BGP EVPN multicast update be received and 'attempted to be readvertised,' which in practice presupposes an established BGP EVPN session and an EVPN multicast configuration - so true 'no-privilege remote' reach depends on an attacker being able to inject a crafted update into the EVPN BGP mesh (on-path, a malicious/compromised peer, or via propagation from upstream). Priority should be High for networks running EVPN multicast on affected Junos versions (patch promptly), but lower for deployments that do not use EVPN or that tightly control BGP peering.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker able to introduce routes into a Junos BGP EVPN fabric - for example a compromised or malicious EVPN peer, or an on-path position in a provider/data-center fabric - sends a BGP EVPN multicast update with an inconsistent/malformed length field. When the receiving Junos or Junos OS Evolved device attempts to readvertise that update, rpd mishandles the length parameter and crashes, disrupting routing. No public exploit code is identified at this time, so exploitation would require the attacker to craft the malformed update independently.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

Denial of service affecting Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved: an unauthenticated remote attacker who can deliver a specifically malformed BGP EVPN multicast update to a device configured for EVPN multicast can crash the routing protocol daemon (rpd) when that update is processed for readvertisement, taking down routing on the affected box. Per the vendor's CVSS 4.0 and our independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:H), the impact is availability-only, but exposure is bounded by a real prerequisite: the target must run EVPN multicast (e.g. EVPN handling of IGMP/MLD / SMET multicast routes) with a live BGP session, and the attacker needs a peering relationship or on-path injection capability for the update to arrive and be readvertised. Vendor-released patches are available and no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, so this is a genuine but bounded operational risk.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released fixes from Juniper advisory JSA112187 (https://supportportal.juniper.net/JSA112187): Junos OS should be upgraded to 23.2R2-S7.7, 23.4R2-S8.13, 24.2R2-S5.5, 24.4R2-S5, 25.2R2-S2, 25.4R1-S3 or 26.2R1-S2 (or later), while Junos OS Evolved should be upgraded to 23.2R2-S7.7-EVO, 23.4R2-S8.11-EVO, 24.2R2-S5.6-EVO, 24.4R2-S5-EVO, 25.2R2-S2-EVO, 25.4R1-S3-EVO or 26.2R1-S2-EVO, with the plus/hardened trains requiring 25.2X100-D35-EVO or 25.4X300-D40-EVO respectively. If immediate upgrades are not feasible, apply compensating controls that shrink the reachability of the EVPN BGP control plane: restrict BGP peering to known, trusted neighbors with peer authentication (TCP-MD5/AO) and strict import policy, since any peer or on-path element that can inject an EVPN multicast update can trigger the crash; a side effect is that adding or changing peers becomes a manual, policy-gated operation and misconfigured sessions will bounce. Where EVPN multicast is not operationally required, disable the EVPN multicast handling (do not accept/originate IGMP/MLD/SMET EVPN routes) or apply routing policy to drop EVPN multicast route types at the session boundary, at the cost of losing EVPN multicast forwarding for that fabric. Note that these workarounds reduce but do not eliminate exposure, because the defect is in rpd's parsing/readvertisement logic itself, and any permitted EVPN multicast update source remains a potential trigger; monitor rpd for unexpected restarts as a detection signal until patched.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is an instance of CWE-130, Improper Handling of Length Parameter Inconsistency, inside the routing protocol daemon (rpd) that powers both Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. BGP EVPN carries Layer 2/Layer 3 reachability information in typed routes, including the multicast-related route types (SMET/IGMP/MLD join-and-leave routes) used for EVPN multicast. Those routes encode length and field-count parameters in their NLRI/path-attribute structures; when rpd parses an update whose declared length parameters are internally inconsistent with the actual encoded data, the mismatch is not validated correctly, and the crafting of that inconsistency is what drives the daemon into a crash rather than a benign error. The trigger is specifically the readvertisement path: rpd crashes when it attempts to re-advertise the malformed EVPN multicast update to other peers, which is why the condition requires an established BGP session and an EVPN multicast configuration rather than merely passing traffic through the device. CPE data confirms the two affected platforms are juniper_networks:junos_os and juniper_networks:junos_os_evolved, and the EUVD entry (EUVD-2026-101314) enumerates affected maintenance releases across the 23.2, 23.4, 24.2, 24.4, 25.2, 25.4 and 26.2 families plus the 23.4X100, 25.2X100 and 25.4X300 hardened/plus-style trains, indicating a defect in the shared BGP EVPN parsing code path rather than a single release regression. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact in either the vendor or the independent assessment, so the practical risk is loss of control-plane availability and the routing churn that follows an rpd restart.
