Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires that a crafted zone file containing a SVCB or HTTPS resource record - with RDATA filled to the wire-format limit followed by an ECH parameter - be fed directly to NSD for parsing. The attacker must therefore control or inject into the zone-provisioning path (e.g. an operator-controlled provisioning system or a multi-tenant zone-submission pipeline). Key LIMITING factor explicitly stated by the vendor: zone files written out by NSD itself, such as secondary zones received via AXFR/IXFR, are NOT formatted this way and cannot trigger the flaw - so normal remote DNS queries and standard secondary-zone operation are not an exploitation surface. This is a data/trust-boundary dependent flaw, not unauthenticated remote exploitation.

Impact

This is a stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121) in NSD's parsing of SVCB/HTTPS resource records: an oversized ECH parameter overflows the stack and the base64 decoder then writes attacker-controlled data of unlimited size, a classic path to arbitrary code execution. The vendor-supplied CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N) scores 8.7 with full High confidentiality, integrity and availability impact, consistent with memory-corruption-to-RCE. However, the real-world risk is materially lower than the raw 8.7 suggests because exploitation is gated by a significant precondition: the malicious SVCB/HTTPS record must arrive in a zone file fed directly to NSD, and NSD-generated zone files (e.g. secondary/AXFR-received zones) are NOT formatted in the vulnerable way, so a remote DNS query alone cannot trigger it. This means an attacker needs control over, or the ability to inject content into, the zone-provisioning pipeline - justifying PR:L rather than PR:N. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data (no public exploit identified at time of analysis), and the only source is the NLnet Labs vendor advisory. Note a tension between the AV:N label and the description's emphasis on operator-fed zone files: the network vector is really the provisioning path, not an unauthenticated query surface - verify the intended trust model with the vendor advisory. Overall: a genuine high-severity RCE for operators of provisioning systems that ingest untrusted/multi-tenant zone data, but not a mass-exploitable remote DNS vulnerability.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker able to submit zone content through an operator-controlled provisioning system (for example a hosting tenant or an upstream data source feeding NSD directly) crafts a zone with a SVCB or HTTPS RR whose RDATA is filled to the wire-format limit followed by an ECH parameter. When NSD parses this zone file, the base64 decoder writes attacker-controlled data past the stack buffer, corrupting the stack and enabling arbitrary code execution in the NSD process. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and triggering requires the record to reach NSD via a directly-fed zone file rather than normal DNS traffic.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026

A stack-based buffer overflow in NLnet Labs NSD's parsing of SVCB/HTTPS resource records allows an attacker who can supply a crafted zone file to corrupt memory and potentially achieve arbitrary code execution. The flaw is triggered when the RDATA is filled to the wire-format limit and an ECH parameter overflows the stack, after which the base64 decoder can write attacker-controlled data of unlimited size. Exploitation requires that the crafted zone file be fed directly to NSD; zone files written by NSD itself (e.g., secondary zones) are not affected. The attacker must control or inject into the zone-provisioning path, such as a multi-tenant zone-submission pipeline, and authentication requirements are low-privileged per the CVSS vector (PR:L). No public exploit or in-the-wild exploitation has been identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

No exact fix version is specified in the provided data; refer to the vendor advisory at https://www.nlnetlabs.nl/downloads/nsd/CVE-2026-101338.txt for patched versions and apply the upgrade as soon as it is available. As an immediate mitigation, restrict zone file inputs to trusted sources: do not feed NSD with zone files from untrusted or multi-tenant provisioning pipelines. Ensure that only NSD-generated zone files (e.g., for secondary zones) are used, as the vendor states these are not vulnerable. If external zone files are required, validate and sanitize them to reject SVCB/HTTPS records with excessive RDATA or ECH parameters. Trade-offs: restricting zone sources may disrupt automated provisioning, and manual validation adds operational overhead. No public exploit has been identified, so prioritize patching based on the high impact (CVSS 8.7) and the potential for code execution.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The vulnerability resides in NSD's implementation of the SVCB (Service Binding) and HTTPS resource record types, which allow clients to specify alternative endpoints and Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) configurations. The CWE-121 stack-based buffer overflow occurs when the RDATA portion of a SVCB/HTTPS record is crafted to exactly fill the wire-format limit; an additional ECH parameter then overflows a stack buffer, and the subsequent base64 decoding routine fails to validate output length, enabling writes of arbitrary size. This is a classic memory corruption issue that can lead to code execution within the NSD process. The affected component is identified by the CPE cpe:2.3:a:nlnet_labs:nsd:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, indicating that all versions of NSD are considered vulnerable until patched. The attack vector is network-accessible (AV:N) and requires low privileges (PR:L) because the attacker must be able to supply zone files to the NSD server, typically through a provisioning system or zone-transfer channel. Notably, zone files generated by NSD itself (e.g., for secondary zones) are not formatted in the vulnerable way, limiting the exposure to externally supplied zone data.

DescriptionCVE.org

When a SVCB or HTTPS RR has filled the wire format RDATA up to the brim, another ECH parameter may overwrite the stack, and once beyond the limit, the base64 decoder can write attacker controlled data of unlimited size. Zone files which are written out by NSD itself, such as for zones for which the NSD instance is secondary, will not be formatted like this. The zone file must be fed to NSD directly, (but it could come, for example, from an operator controlled provisioning system).

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A memory-corruption flaw in NLnet Labs NSD, the authoritative DNS server used to serve zones for many organizations and hosting providers, can be triggered by anyone able to submit or inject a crafted SVCB/HTTPS zone record into the provisioning pipeline - a realistic risk for multi-tenant DNS platforms, registrars, and managed DNS services that accept zone data from customers or partners. Successful exploitation could let an attacker execute code on a DNS server that is typically internet-facing and business-critical, meaning a compromise could take DNS resolution offline for all zones on that host or turn it into a foothold inside the network. No patch is available and no exploitation has been observed yet, so leadership should treat this as a time-boxed exposure to be contained through provisioning-path controls and compensating hardening while the vendor fix is pending.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: restrict zone provisioning to trusted, authenticated sources and eliminate or tightly gate untrusted multi-tenant zone submission; validate and reject SVCB/HTTPS records whose RDATA approaches the wire-format limit, and strip or disallow ECH parameters and unbounded base64 payloads before they reach NSD; note that NSD-generated secondary zones are not affected, so prefer AXFR/IXFR propagation over direct file injection where feasible; run NSD as an unprivileged user in a chroot/seccomp sandbox with minimal filesystem and network egress; isolate internet-facing NSD hosts from internal networks; monitor for NSD crashes, unexpected restarts, or anomalous process behavior as potential exploitation indicators; monitor the NLnet Labs advisory channel for a fixed version and apply it immediately on release.
