DescriptionCVE.org
MONAI versions before 1.6.0 contain a remote code execution vulnerability in the algo_from_pickle() function due to unsafe pickle.loads() deserialization in monai/auto3dseg/utils.py. Attackers can craft malicious pickle files that execute arbitrary system commands when deserialized by the vulnerable function.

AnalysisAI
Deserialization of attacker-controlled pickle data in MONAI's Auto3DSeg module (monai/auto3dseg/utils.py) lets code run inside any process that calls algo_from_pickle() on a file the attacker can supply or substitute, with full read/write/execute impact on that process and its data. Versions before 1.6.0 are affected (pip package monai < 1.6.0, CPE cpe:2.3:a:project-monai:monai); the vulnerable pickle.loads() at line 321 fires before any isinstance or key checks, so no special configuration flag is needed to reach the sink. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires that a MONAI application or Auto3DSeg pipeline call algo_from_pickle() (in monai/auto3dseg/utils.py) with a file path the attacker can control or substitute - typically via exchange of algorithm bundles or model checkpoints. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine but conditionally-gated deserialization RCE (CWE-502). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Upgrade to MONAI 1.6.0 or later (for example pip install --upgrade 'monai>=1.6.0'), which is the release containing the actual fix for the unsafe pickle.loads() calls in monai/auto3dseg/utils.py; do not treat v1.5.2 as remediated, because GHSA-89gg-p5r5-q6r4's claimed patch was never implemented and 1.5.2 remains exploitable. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, identify all systems running MONAI versions before 1.6.0 (pip package monai < 1.6.0) and inventory any use of the Auto3DSeg module's algo_from_pickle() function. …
