Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the victim to open attacker-controlled web content in a vulnerable Firefox (before 157, or ESR before 153.4) that exercises the Disability Access (accessibility) APIs to trigger the use-after-free - this is the UI:R limiting factor, so it is not zero-click or self-propagating. No authentication is needed (PR:N) and it works over the network against default configurations, but success depends on winning the UAF race and driving the freed accessibility object's reuse, then leveraging the resulting corruption to break out of the content sandbox (S:C). Patched builds (Firefox 157 / ESR 153.4) fully remove the condition.

Impact

This is the highest-severity member of the Firefox 157 / ESR 153.4 use-after-free cluster: CVSS 9.6 with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H. The S:C (scope change) is the discriminator versus the 8.8 sibling UAFs (CVE-2026-100768/100774/100776 etc.) - this bug is a full SANDBOX ESCAPE out of the content process, so a compromise crosses a trust boundary into the host, which is why NVD/Mozilla rate it 9.6 rather than 8.8. However, the exploitation-likelihood signals are weak: EPSS is not provided, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, no public POC is referenced, and Mozilla's own SSVC posture for this advisory batch is exploitation:none. So while technical impact is severe (memory corruption + sandbox escape, C/I/A all High), there is no evidence of real-world exploitation - treat as a genuine but non-emergency priority driven by product ubiquity, not active-threat pressure. Two caveats to state explicitly: the vector correctly requires UI:R (victim must open a crafted page), so this is not a wormable zero-click issue; and the 'Information Disclosure' tag understates the flaw - this is memory corruption / sandbox escape, RCE-class, not a read-only leak.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker lures a Firefox user (below 157 / ESR 153.4) to a malicious or compromised web page that triggers a use-after-free in the accessibility (Disability Access) APIs. The freed-then-reused object lets the attacker corrupt memory in the content process and, because of the scope change, escape the sandbox to gain code execution on the host. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the attack requires the victim to visit the page (UI:R).

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026

Sandbox escape in Mozilla Firefox allows remote attackers to break out of the content sandbox by exploiting a use-after-free in the browser's Disability Access (accessibility) APIs. Affected are Firefox versions before 157 and Firefox ESR versions before 153.4; the attack is network-delivered and requires no authentication, but is not zero-click - the victim must open attacker-controlled web content that exercises the accessibility APIs and win the use-after-free race (CVSS 3.1 9.6, AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H). Mozilla has fixed the flaw in Firefox 157 and Firefox ESR 153.4, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; the score reflects the high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact combined with scope change once the sandbox boundary is crossed, while the UI:R component keeps it from being self-propagating.

RemediationAI

Apply the vendor-released patch: upgrade Firefox to version 157 or later, or Firefox ESR to version 153.4 or later, as specified in Mozilla advisories https://www.mozilla.org/security/advisories/mfsa2026-100/ and https://www.mozilla.org/security/advisories/mfsa2026-97/ (Engineering detail: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2056767). These are full-version replacements, so there is no partial hotfix; enterprise deployments using ESR should prioritize 153.4 since ESR customers are typically the largest at-risk population during the pre-patch window. The most direct compensating control is to disable browser accessibility support (the Accessibility service and related platform a11y bridging) so the vulnerable object graph is never instantiated; the trade-off is that this breaks screen readers, magnifiers, and other assistive tooling for users who depend on them, so it should be applied selectively rather than as a blanket policy. Restricting the browser to a curated allow-list of trusted sites, and isolating high-risk browsing inside a disposable VM or container, are additional short-term mitigations, with the trade-off of reduced usability and higher operational overhead. Blocking or sandboxing untrusted web content reduces exposure but does not remove the flaw, and because the vulnerability is reachable whenever accessibility is enabled, patching remains the only complete fix.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The flaw is a use-after-free (CWE-416) in Firefox's Disability Access APIs - the bridge layer that exposes browser content and UI objects to platform assistive technologies such as AT-SPI/ATK on Linux, IAccessible2/UIA on Windows, and the macOS accessibility API. When accessibility support is active (or gets activated by the presence of assistive tooling), Firefox instantiates a tree of accessibility objects and hands references to those objects outward; a lifetime-management error lets a freed accessibility object remain reachable and be reused after deallocation. Memory corruption of this class is particularly dangerous in a browser because the freed object can be reallocated with attacker-influenced data, potentially yielding a controlled read/write primitive. Because the vulnerable component runs in a privileged context relative to web content, successful corruption lets the attacker pivot past the content sandbox - hence the scope change (S:C) to a full browser compromise with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact. The CPE entry (cpe:2.3:a:mozilla:firefox:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) confirms the affected product family, with the vulnerable window being all releases before Firefox 157 and ESR releases before 153.4.

Sandbox escape due to use-after-free in the Disability Access APIs component. This vulnerability was fixed in Firefox ESR 153.4 and Firefox 157.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A critical sandbox-escape flaw in Mozilla Firefox (CVE-2026-100800) allows an attacker who entices a user into opening crafted web content to break out of the browser's protective sandbox and operate on the endpoint with that user's privileges, exposing corporate data, credentials, and systems. Because Firefox is broadly deployed across typical workforces and the attack requires no credentials - only that an employee browses attacker-controlled content - the effective exposure surface is essentially every user who touches the web. Leadership should treat this as a near-term enterprise patching priority rather than an isolated browser issue, given the high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact once the sandbox boundary is crossed.

Business Impact: High
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch (Firefox 157 or Firefox ESR 153.4) where confirmed available; if those builds cannot be deployed immediately, set accessibility.force_disabled=1 via enterprise policy to disable the accessibility APIs used in the exploit path, restrict browsing of untrusted or unsolicited web content, and monitor endpoints for anomalous post-browser activity. Note: the vulnerability record lists patch status as NOT available while the technical description cites fixed versions - verify against Mozilla's advisory before relying on either.

Attack Technique

Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
