Budibase versions before 3.45.0 fail to disable external JSON reference resolution in the OpenAPI/Swagger import validator, allowing authenticated builders to read arbitrary local files. Attackers with builder access can embed file:// references in OpenAPI specifications submitted to the import endpoint to exfiltrate sensitive files including environment variables containing JWT secrets, API keys, and database credentials.
AnalysisAI
Authenticated users holding the builder role in Budibase Server deployments before 3.45.0 can read arbitrary files from the host by submitting an OpenAPI/Swagger specification containing file:// external references to the data-source import endpoint, because the import validator never disables external JSON reference ($ref) resolution. Disclosed files include .env content and other configuration material holding JWT signing secrets, API keys and database credentials, so a read-only confidentiality bug can chain into full session forgery and downstream access to connected systems. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Requires an authenticated Budibase builder-level account (PR:L) and network access to the builder's OpenAPI/Swagger data-source import endpoint. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine but conditional risk. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: upgrade Budibase Server to 3.45.0 or later, which is the version that disables external JSON reference resolution in the OpenAPI/Swagger import validator; the release notes and advisory at https://github.com/Budibase/budibase/security/advisories/GHSA-8xr5-pggf-26jq should be consulted before rolling out, and patching is the only complete fix because the vulnerable behavior is in application code. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all Budibase Server instances, identify any version before 3.45.0, and prioritize internet-facing or multi-tenant deployments for immediate upgrade to 3.45.0 or later; restrict builder-role accounts to trusted personnel and review their entitlements. …
