| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated session with administrator privileges to the ClipBucket v5 admin backend (consistent with PR:H), specifically access to the update/SQL-update workflow that reaches /upload/admin_area/actions/update_launch.php. The attacker supplies a malicious 'type' value in a POST request, which is embedded into PHP tags and executed server-side without sanitization (CWE-94). Affected: ClipBucket v5 prior to 5.5.2 #147. Limiting factors that reduce real-world exposure: the endpoint is in the admin area so prior admin authentication is mandatory, there is no unauthenticated path in the provided data, and the fix in 5.5.2 #147 remediates it - so patched instances or network-restricted admin panels are not exploitable. |
| Impact | CVSS 3.1 base score is 7.2 (High) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, meaning network-reachable, low-complexity, no user interaction, but requiring HIGH privileges (PR:H). This single factor is the dominant risk moderator: the vulnerable endpoint /upload/admin_area/actions/update_launch.php lives in the authenticated administrator area, so an attacker must already hold admin-level access to the ClipBucket backend before the PHP code-injection becomes reachable. A publicly available exploit/advisory exists (GitHub GHSA-3x4g-x3gv-rjmq), which raises weaponization potential, but POC availability is NOT the same as active exploitation. The CVE is NOT listed in CISA KEV and no EPSS probability was provided in the input, so there is no signal of widespread or confirmed real-world exploitation - absence of these should be read as 'unknown', not 'safe'. No SSVC decision data was supplied. Net assessment: a genuine RCE but gated behind administrative authentication, so it is best characterized as a post-authentication privilege-to-code-execution escalation rather than a drive-by unauthenticated RCE. Priority is moderate for internet-exposed admin panels (especially where admin credentials are weak/shared), lower where the admin interface is network-restricted. One caveat to verify: the supplied vendor commit diff addresses a 'stuck update notice' and the force_no_stuck_icon flag rather than visibly sanitizing the 'type' parameter, so the exact fix mechanism could not be independently confirmed from the diff alone. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has obtained ClipBucket administrator access (via stolen/weak credentials or a chained flaw) sends a crafted POST request to /upload/admin_area/actions/update_launch.php with a malicious 'type' value; because the value is embedded unsanitized inside PHP tags and executed, arbitrary PHP runs on the server, yielding full RCE in the web application context. Public exploit/advisory material exists (GHSA-3x4g-x3gv-rjmq), lowering the effort to reproduce. The network vector and low complexity (AV:N/AC:L) make the request trivial once admin authentication is held. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026
Arbitrary PHP code execution in ClipBucket v5 (all releases prior to 5.5.2 #147) lets an administrator with backend access run attacker-supplied PHP on the server by posting a crafted "type" value to /upload/admin_area/actions/update_launch.php, which embeds that value directly inside PHP tags without sanitization. Rated CVSS 3.1 7.2 (High) with vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, the flaw is network-reachable and low-complexity but requires high privileges - a valid admin session - and no unauthenticated path is present in the available data. Publicly available exploit code exists, and the vendor has shipped a fix in ClipBucket v5 version 5.5.2 #147.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to ClipBucket v5 version 5.5.2 #147 or later, which is the vendor-released patch for this issue; the release is available at https://github.com/MacWarrior/clipbucket-v5/releases/tag/5.5.2-%23147 and the underlying fix is commit e81bac602c871bb1ad971884003a3a496a2ab50b (https://github.com/MacWarrior/clipbucket-v5/commit/e81bac602c871bb1ad971884003a3a496a2ab50b), with details in advisory GHSA-3x4g-x3gv-rjmq. If immediate patching is not possible, apply the commit manually to upload/admin_area/actions/update_launch.php and upload/includes/classes/update.class.php and adopt the guarded msg_update_db.html template. Because exploitation requires an authenticated administrator (PR:H), the highest-value compensating control is to stop exposing the admin backend: restrict /upload/admin_area/ to trusted IP ranges or a VPN and place it behind HTTP authentication at the reverse proxy - the trade-off is that administrators lose off-network access and remote administration becomes dependent on the VPN/proxy availability. Additionally, review and rotate credentials for any account with admin rights, enforce least-privilege so only operators who truly need the update workflow hold administrator roles (side effect: slower routine maintenance), and deploy WAF or proxy rules that reject POST bodies containing PHP open tags (<?php, <?=) directed at /upload/admin_area/actions/update_launch.php (side effect: potential false positives and bypasses via encoding, so treat this only as a stopgap). Monitor web server logs for anomalous POSTs to admin_area/actions/update_launch.php and audit the server for unexpected PHP files or webshell artifacts, since public exploit code for this issue is already available. Note the risk is not zero even for patched instances unless the admin panel exposure is reduced.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is a code-injection defect (CWE-94) in a PHP-based open-source video sharing platform, catalogued as cpe:2.3:a:oxygenz:clipbucket. ClipBucket's admin update flow passes the POST parameter "type" into Update::getInstance()->displayGlobalSQLUpdateAlert(), a routine in upload/includes/classes/update.class.php that builds an administrative notice rendered through the template upload/admin_area/styles/cb_2014/layout/msg_update_db.html. Because the parameter is concatenated into PHP tags rather than treated as inert data, an attacker-controlled string is evaluated as PHP on the server, converting a benign status/notice mechanism into a server-side code execution primitive. The vendor fix commit (e81bac602c871bb1ad971884003a3a496a2ab50b) changes the call site in upload/admin_area/actions/update_launch.php to pass a second argument, adds a $force_no_stuck_icon parameter to displayGlobalSQLUpdateAlert(), and guards the template's stuck-update icon logic with !empty($lastStart) checks and a new getLastLogs() condition - hardening the same update-notice code path that was reachable by the injected "type" value. The pattern is a classic reminder that administrative "status" and "update" helpers which interpolate request data into executable templates are just as dangerous as direct eval-style sinks.

DescriptionCVE.org
ClipBucket v5 is an open source video sharing platform. Prior to version 5.5.2 #147, ClipBucket v5 is vulnerable to arbitrary PHP code execution. In /upload/admin_area/actions/update_launch.php, the "type" parameter from a POST request is embedded into PHP tags and executed. Proper sanitization is not performed, and by injecting malicious code an attacker can execute arbitrary PHP code. This allows an attacker to achieve RCE. This issue has been resolved in version 5.5.2 #147.
Executive ViewAI
ClipBucket v5 deployments prior to 5.5.2 #147 are exposed to authenticated admin-driven PHP code execution, which can let a malicious or compromised administrator take control of the underlying server. Publicly available exploit code exists, and the flaw requires a valid high-privilege admin session, so the primary organizational risk is escalation from a trusted backend role to full application and host compromise. Leadership should prioritize patching and tightening administrative access to prevent credential theft or insider misuse from becoming a broader environment breach.

Attack Technique
Code injection occurs when an application accepts user input and passes it directly into a language interpreter or evaluator without proper sanitization.
Remote Code Execution represents the critical moment when an attacker successfully runs arbitrary code on a target system without physical access.
