2 techniques across 2 tactics: Command and Control, Persistence The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated session to the FreePBX web administration interface with access to the Endpoint Manager module and a known/valid username; the core technique abuses the 'fwbrand' parameter in the module's firmware/file-upload function to override the destination file path, allowing an arbitrary file (e.g. a PHP webshell) to be written to an attacker-chosen, web-accessible location. The primary limiting factor is the authentication requirement - this is not an unauthenticated flaw - so real-world risk concentrates on deployments with internet-exposed admin GUIs, weak/default/reused credentials, or broadly granted module permissions. Affected builds are FreePBX 16 before 16.0.92 and FreePBX 17 before 17.0.6; patched versions remediate the path-traversal behavior. |
| Impact | This is a genuine priority, not a paper-high score. The signals align strongly: CVSS 4.0 base 8.6 (High) with AV:N/AC:L/UI:N indicates trivial network-reachable exploitation requiring no victim interaction, and an exceptionally high EPSS of 43.68% (99th percentile) marks it as among the most likely-to-be-exploited CVEs, consistent with the publicly available exploit code. The one mitigating signal is PR:H in the vendor vector (authentication with a known username required), which gates exploitation behind valid credentials - meaning this is most dangerous where credentials are weak, reused, default, or the admin GUI is internet-exposed. There is a minor internal tension worth verifying: the description characterizes the actor as 'authenticated users' and notes only that a 'known username' is required, which reads closer to low-privilege (PR:L) than the vendor's PR:H; teams should confirm the exact privilege level needed to reach the Endpoint Manager module. It is NOT currently on CISA KEV, so despite the high EPSS and public POC there is no confirmed in-the-wild exploitation at time of analysis - the high EPSS reflects predicted/likely exploitation given a public exploit, which should not be conflated with active attacks. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds valid FreePBX admin-GUI credentials (or obtains them via weak/default/reused passwords on an exposed interface) sends a crafted file-upload request to the Endpoint Manager module, abusing the fwbrand parameter to redirect the upload path and plant a PHP webshell in a web-accessible directory. They then browse to the uploaded webshell to execute arbitrary commands as the web server user, achieving remote code execution. Public exploit code for this flaw is already available, lowering the skill barrier considerably. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026
Authenticated arbitrary file upload in the FreePBX Endpoint Manager module (FreePBX 16 before 16.0.92 and FreePBX 17 before 17.0.6) lets a logged-in admin-interface user abuse the fwbrand parameter to override the upload destination path, writing attacker-controlled files such as a PHP webshell into web-accessible locations and thereby achieving remote code execution. Exploitation requires an authenticated session with access to the Endpoint Manager module and a known/valid username, so real-world risk is concentrated on deployments with internet-exposed admin GUIs, weak or reused credentials, or over-broad module permissions. Publicly available exploit code exists and EPSS is elevated at 43.68% (99th percentile), but the flaw is not confirmed actively exploited (no CISA KEV listing); vendor patches are available in 16.0.92 and 17.0.6.
RemediationAI
Upgrade the Endpoint Manager module to the fixed releases: version 16.0.92 on FreePBX 16 and version 17.0.6 on FreePBX 17 (see the vendor advisory GHSA-7p8x-8m3m-58j9). Because exploitation requires an authenticated session with access to the Endpoint Manager module, the most effective compensating controls until patching is complete are to restrict and harden administrative access: do not expose the FreePBX admin GUI to the internet (place it behind a VPN, management VLAN, or IP allowlist), enforce strong unique credentials and MFA for all admin accounts, and audit/reduce which users have access to the Endpoint Manager module - the trade-off is reduced remote-administration convenience and the need to maintain an allowlist/VPN. Monitor and alert on unexpected file writes under web-served directories and on new PHP files appearing in module upload paths, and check for webshell indicators. Rotating admin credentials is advisable if compromise is suspected. There is no unauthenticated path to exploit this, so blocking external access to the admin interface meaningfully lowers risk even before the upgrade is applied.
Affected ProductsAI
FreePBX 16 running the Endpoint Manager module before version 16.0.92, and FreePBX 17 running the Endpoint Manager module before version 17.0.6. The flaw resides in the Endpoint Manager module (the fwbrand file-upload/path-handling code) rather than in the FreePBX core itself, so any deployment whose module version falls below the fixed releases is affected. Patched releases are 16.0.92 (FreePBX 16) and 17.0.6 (FreePBX 17). The vendor advisory is the GitHub security advisory GHSA-7p8x-8m3m-58j9 (https://github.com/FreePBX/security-reporting/security/advisories/GHSA-7p8x-8m3m-58j9), which documents the affected and fixed versions.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The vulnerability is an unrestricted-file-upload flaw (CWE-434) in the FreePBX Endpoint Manager module, a component used to provision and manage telephony endpoints (IP phones/softphones) on FreePBX systems. The module's firmware/branding upload functionality accepts a file plus a 'fwbrand' parameter that is used to construct the destination path; because this parameter is not properly validated or sanitized against path traversal, an attacker can redirect where the uploaded file is written. This path-override combined with the file upload allows placement of an arbitrary file - classically a PHP webshell - into a directory served by the web front end, converting an upload primitive into code execution. The affected code lives in the module shipped with FreePBX 16 (prior to 16.0.92) and FreePBX 17 (prior to 17.0.6); the patched builds correct the path-traversal/validation behavior. The key constraint is authentication: per the assessed vector the attacker must already hold a valid session and username with access to the Endpoint Manager module, which is why this is a post-authentication, not pre-authentication, issue.

DescriptionCVE.org
FreePBX Endpoint Manager is a module for managing telephony endpoints in FreePBX systems. In versions prior to 16.0.92 for FreePBX 16 and versions prior to 17.0.6 for FreePBX 17, the Endpoint Manager module contains an authenticated arbitrary file upload vulnerability affecting the fwbrand parameter. The fwbrand parameter allows an attacker to change the file path. Combined, these issues can result in a webshell being uploaded. Authentication with a known username is required to exploit this vulnerability. Successful exploitation allows authenticated users to upload arbitrary files to attacker-controlled paths on the server, potentially leading to remote code execution. This issue has been patched in version 16.0.92 for FreePBX 16 and version 17.0.6 for FreePBX 17.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity flaw in the FreePBX Endpoint Manager module allows an attacker who holds a valid administrative login to upload a web shell and run arbitrary code on the phone system server itself. Because FreePBX commonly sits on or near the network edge, a compromise could expose call records, enable toll fraud and call interception, and provide a foothold for lateral movement into the wider corporate environment. Publicly available exploit code exists and the predicted exploitation probability is unusually high (EPSS 43.7%, 99th percentile), making prompt remediation of internet-reachable management interfaces a near-term priority.
Apply vendor patch (FreePBX 16.0.92 / 17.0.6). Until patched, remove administrative GUI exposure to the internet (VPN or strict IP allowlisting), enforce strong unique credentials and MFA, restrict Endpoint Manager module access to the smallest possible set of administrators, and monitor web-accessible directories and file integrity for unauthorized PHP uploads.
