| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a developer to run the Cursor CLI Agent (version 1.7 or below) against attacker-influenced content, allowing prompt injection to overwrite the agent's trusted configuration file at */.cursor/cli.json. The RCE path is further gated on a case-insensitive filesystem - present by default on macOS and Windows but generally NOT on Linux - which both broadens exposure on the former and limits it on the latter. Limiting factors: mandatory user interaction (the victim must actively invoke the agent on the malicious input), the version ceiling (≤1.7), and the filesystem-case dependency. No specially privileged account is needed beyond the developer's own session. |
| Impact | Signals are mixed and lean toward moderate real-world priority despite the HIGH 8.8 base score. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R) describes a network-reachable, unauthenticated code-injection flaw with full C/I/A impact, which drives the high score, but the UI:R flag is decisive: exploitation is not autonomous - a developer must actually run the Cursor CLI Agent against attacker-controlled content for the prompt injection to fire. EPSS is low at 0.12% (31st percentile), the vulnerability is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit was identified in the provided data, so there is no evidence of active or at-scale exploitation. The description also adds a material precondition absent from the CVSS vector - the RCE path depends on a case-insensitive filesystem (default on macOS and Windows, but not typical Linux) - which the AC:L rating does not reflect; a stricter reading could justify AC:H. No SSVC decision data was provided. Net: a credible, vendor-acknowledged (GitHub Security Advisory) code-execution bug worth patching on developer workstations, but the low EPSS, absence of KEV/POC, and the required user action argue against treating it as an emergency relative to its 8.8 label. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker plants a prompt-injection payload in content a developer will feed to the Cursor CLI Agent (e.g., a repository file, issue, or document). When the developer runs the agent on it, the injected instructions cause the agent to overwrite the trusted */.cursor/cli.json configuration, and on a case-insensitive filesystem the tampered config is loaded and executes attacker-chosen commands as the developer. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv2 – Oct 19, 2026
Remote code execution in Cursor CLI Agent 1.7 and earlier can be triggered by unauthenticated attackers through prompt injection that overwrites the agent's trusted cli.json configuration on case-insensitive filesystems. Exploitation requires a developer to run the CLI agent against attacker-influenced content (CVSS UI:R), and the RCE path is gated on default case-insensitive filesystems such as macOS and Windows rather than typical Linux deployments. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and EPSS is 0.12%, indicating low predicted exploitation likelihood.

RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (commit 25b418f); a released patched version was not independently confirmed as of October 3, 2025, so track https://github.com/cursor/cursor/security/advisories/GHSA-x2vq-h6v6-jhc6 and upgrade Cursor CLI Agent to the first release containing that commit. Until then, avoid running Cursor CLI Agent 1.7 or earlier against untrusted repositories, prompts, or agent inputs, and prefer disabling the CLI Agent on macOS and Windows where case-insensitive filesystems make the RCE path viable; the trade-off is loss of agent functionality. Where feasible, run the agent in a case-sensitive filesystem or container, or restrict and monitor writes to */.cursor/cli.json using OS permissions or file-integrity monitoring; these are compensating controls only, and case-sensitive environments or restrictive permissions may break expected agent configuration updates.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Cursor is an AI code editor, and its CLI Agent is designed to protect sensitive files such as */.cursor/cli.json. CVE-2025-61593 is a CWE-94 code-injection issue: prompt injection can cause the agent to treat attacker-influenced instructions as trusted and modify that configuration file. The case-insensitive filesystem dependency, default on macOS and Windows but generally not on Linux, indicates that alternate path casing can reach the same protected file and bypass the agent's file-protection handling; a successful overwrite of cli.json can then lead to code execution in the developer's session. The CVSS vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R means remote, low-complexity, unauthenticated exploitation is possible but requires the victim to interact with the agent. The CPE cpe:2.3:a:anysphere:cursor:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* covers Cursor, with EUVD specifying affected versions <=1.7.

Network-delivered prompt injection needs no privileges (PR:N) but requires the developer to run the agent (UI:R); successful config overwrite yields full code execution, so C/I/A:H.

3DescriptionNVD
Cursor is a code editor built for programming with AI. In versions 1.7 and below, a vulnerability in the way Cursor CLI Agent protects its sensitive files (i.e. */.cursor/cli.json) allows attackers to modify the content of the files through prompt injection, thus achieving remote code execution. A prompt injection can lead to full RCE through modifying sensitive files on case-insensitive filesystems. This issue is fixed in a commit, 25b418f, but has yet to be released as of October 3, 2025.
Executive ViewAI
Organizations using Cursor face moderate risk from CVE-2025-61593, a code injection vulnerability rated CVSS 7.1. Successful exploitation could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code or commands on affected systems, potentially leading to full system compromise. Organizations should apply vendor updates when available and consider compensating controls in the interim.
Apply vendor patch. If immediate patching is not feasible: (1) Deploy WAF rules to block injection patterns; (2) Restrict network access to affected components; (3) Enable enhanced logging for suspicious activity.
