AnalysisAI

Use-after-free in the Linux kernel's mt76 MediaTek WiFi driver exposes systems with MT76-series adapters to kernel memory corruption when a race condition between the TX scheduling worker thread and station lifecycle management is triggered from an adjacent network position. The mtxq->wcid pointer in mt76_txq_schedule is read without RCU protection while a concurrent sta_info_free call in the mac80211 subsystem invalidates it, confirmed by KASAN instrumentation in the CVE description. No active exploitation has been confirmed (absent from CISA KEV) and EPSS is extremely low at 0.01%, though the 8.8 CVSS score reflects the kernel-level impact potential of the underlying primitive.

Technical ContextAI

The vulnerability (CWE-416, Use After Free) lives in the mt76 kernel module - the upstream Linux driver for MediaTek MT76-series wireless chipsets - and is concretely demonstrated against the MT7921 via the mt7921_common module. The race exists between two asynchronous kernel execution contexts: the mt76-tx phy0 worker thread running mt76_txq_schedule (which dereferences mtxq->wcid, a pointer to the per-station wireless client identifier structure), and the mac80211 station management path executing sta_info_alloc and sta_info_free. When a station is torn down - either via deauthentication or, as the KASAN trace shows, via wiphy_suspend triggering cfg80211_disconnect - the sta_info memory is freed by task 10927 while the TX worker (task 883) is still in the middle of a read. The fix wraps wcid pointer access within mt76_txq_schedule under rcu_read_lock to synchronize against the sta_info lifecycle, preventing the dereference of freed memory. Affected CPE: cpe:2.3:o:linux:linux_kernel across multiple stable branches.

RemediationAI

Four upstream stable-tree fixes are available and should be applied as part of the next kernel update: https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4448327b41738dbfcda680eb4935ff835568f468, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/51fb1278aa57ae0fc54adaa786e1965362bed4fb, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/d5f77f1dbb59feae81f88e44551e8e1d8a802d9a, and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/e55bcdd0bf34a8b10d45ce80ebb3164c5292a17d. Red Hat users should apply RHSA-2023:2951 or RHSA-2023:2458 for earlier RHEL versions, or the applicable 2025 advisories (RHSA-2025:9493 through RHSA-2025:10828) depending on their RHEL release. SUSE users should apply the relevant SUSE-SU-2025 update for their distribution. As an immediate workaround on systems where MT76 WiFi is non-critical, unloading the affected modules via 'modprobe -r mt7921_common mt76' eliminates the attack surface entirely, though this disables all WiFi functionality on that adapter. Blacklisting the modules in /etc/modprobe.d/ provides a persistent workaround until the kernel patch is applied; the trade-off is complete loss of wireless connectivity on the affected hardware.
