MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to already hold a low-privileged authenticated local account on the target host (PR:L, AV:L) and to interact with the Windows Search component in a way that triggers the use-after-free. The HIGH attack complexity (AC:H) is itself the key limiting factor: the flaw is a memory-corruption/race condition that the attacker must reliably win, so success is timing-dependent and not guaranteed on each attempt. No user interaction is needed (UI:N). There is no remote attack surface and no default-configuration remote exposure - the Windows Search service is present by default on supported Windows client and server editions, but reaching the flaw still requires prior local code execution or an interactive logon. |
| Impact | This is a CVSS 7.0 (High) local privilege-escalation flaw whose real-world risk signals are mostly moderate-to-low despite the serious technical impact. The CVSS vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N shows local-only attack vector, HIGH attack complexity, and LOW privileges required - meaning the attacker must already have an authenticated foothold on the host and must win a non-trivial condition (typical of use-after-free race conditions) to succeed. CISA's SSVC decision framework reinforces a non-urgent posture: Exploitation=none (no observed exploitation), Automatable=no (cannot be reliably weaponized at scale), though Technical Impact=total (full C:H/I:H/A:H on the local system). No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC is present in the provided data, so exploitation probability cannot be quantified and there is no evidence of active exploitation. The combination of AV:L + AC:H + SSVC Automatable=no makes this a credible but lower-priority item than its 7.0 score alone suggests - it is a privilege-escalation building block for an attacker who already has code execution, not an internet-facing mass-exploitation risk. No key signals conflict; the main gap is the absence of EPSS/KEV/POC data, which limits confidence on likelihood rather than impact. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has already gained low-privileged, authenticated access to a Windows host (e.g., via phishing, a prior exploit, or a standard user account) triggers the use-after-free in the Windows Search component to corrupt memory and execute code in a higher-privileged context, achieving full local SYSTEM-level compromise. Because of the HIGH attack complexity (AV:L/AC:H), the attacker must reliably win a timing/race condition, so exploitation is not trivial. No public exploit code was identified at the time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Local privilege escalation in the Microsoft Windows Search component allows an attacker who already holds a low-privileged account on a target host to trigger a use-after-free and execute code with SYSTEM privileges. The flaw affects supported Windows 10 (1607 through 22H2), Windows 11 (23H2 through 26H2) and Windows Server 2012 through 2025 builds, including Server Core installations, up to Microsoft's fixed build numbers. No public exploit identified at time of analysis: CISA's SSVC records exploitation as 'none' and the issue as not automatable, and the HIGH attack complexity (AC:H) means an attacker must reliably win a memory-corruption race rather than fire a one-shot exploit, keeping real-world risk moderate despite the CVSS 7.0 (High) rating.

Vendor-released patch: apply the Microsoft security update for CVE-2026-83564 so each host meets or exceeds the fixed builds published in the MSRC update guide (https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-83564) - for example 10.0.26100.9711 (Windows 11 24H2), 10.0.26200.9711 (25H2), 10.0.26300.9711 (26H2), 10.0.28000.3231 (26H1), 10.0.22631.7652 (23H2), 10.0.19044.7807 (Windows 10 21H2/22H2), 10.0.17763.9376 (Windows 10 1809 and Server 2019), 10.0.14393.9612 (Windows 10 1607 and Server 2016), 10.0.20348.5761 (Server 2022), 10.0.26100.33650 (Server 2025), 6.3.9600.23470 (Server 2012 R2) and 6.2.9200.26434 (Server 2012). Since exploitation requires a pre-existing low-privileged local account (PR:L, AV:L), the most effective compensating controls attack that prerequisite: enforce least privilege, restrict interactive and RDP logon to trusted users, and treat any foothold that yields local code execution (malicious document, phishing payload, compromised service account) as a direct escalation path to this bug, prioritising its patching on multi-user systems such as RDS/Citrix hosts and terminal servers where many low-privileged sessions coexist. On hosts that do not need indexing, stopping and disabling the Windows Search service (WSearch) removes reachability of the vulnerable component at the cost of losing Start menu, File Explorer and Outlook search and possibly breaking applications that depend on the indexer - practical only for hardened server roles. Ensuring exploit mitigations such as Control Flow Guard, SEHOP and Credential Guard remain enabled raises the bar for converting the use-after-free into reliable SYSTEM code execution but does not by itself fix the flaw, and because there is no remote attack surface there is no network-level mitigation that addresses this CVE.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Windows Search is the indexing subsystem that powers search in File Explorer, the Start menu, Outlook and other shell surfaces; its indexer runs as a privileged service so it can crawl content belonging to all users on the box, which is why memory corruption there is a privilege-escalation primitive. The root cause is a use-after-free (CWE-416): a heap object still referenced by the search component is freed, and a stale pointer to that chunk is later dereferenced while attacker-influenced data has been placed in the reclaimed memory. Exploitation is therefore heap-layout and timing dependent, which is reflected in the CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H vector supplied by Microsoft matching our independent assessment: local access (AV:L), a low-privileged authenticated account (PR:L), no user interaction (UI:N), unchanged scope (S:U), and high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact, consistent with the 'total' technical impact recorded in the CISA SSVC assessment and with the memory-corruption / denial-of-service tags. There is no network attack surface and no default remote exposure; reaching the vulnerable code requires prior local code execution or an interactive logon.

Use after free in Microsoft Windows Search Component allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.
Executive ViewAI
Microsoft Windows Search contains a high-severity local privilege escalation flaw (CVE-2026-83564) that could allow an attacker with an existing low-privileged account to gain SYSTEM-level control on affected Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server 2012 through 2025 systems, including Server Core. The business risk is concentrated in unpatched endpoints and servers across the Windows estate, but exploitation is constrained by local access and a high-complexity race condition, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis; Patch available per vendor advisory.

Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
