MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local, authenticated access to the host (AV:L, PR:L) - the attacker must already be able to execute code as a standard user; no user interaction is needed (UI:N). The concrete trigger is parsing of a malformed UDF (Universal Disk Format) volume by the UDFS.sys driver, i.e. mounting or accessing a crafted UDF-formatted image/optical medium, which drives the kernel into a use-after-free (CWE-122). Limiting factors: there is no remote vector (not network-reachable), and the attacker needs a prior foothold on the system; the vulnerable code path lives in a kernel driver present by default, so no non-default feature toggle is required. All listed Windows 10/11 and Windows Server builds below the patched versions are affected. |
| Impact | All exploitation signals point to a moderate, patch-in-due-course priority rather than an emergency. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N) describes a local attack by an already-authenticated low-privileged user with low complexity and no user interaction, yielding total impact (C:H/I:H/A:H) - consistent with a kernel-driver elevation-of-privilege to SYSTEM. CISA's SSVC framework reinforces the lower urgency: Exploitation=none (no observed exploitation), Automatable=no (cannot be reliably mass-exploited, as expected for a local EoP requiring prior code execution), though Technical Impact=total matches the CVSS high-impact triad. There is no CISA KEV listing and no public exploit referenced, so this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' EPSS score was NOT provided in the input and cannot be factored in. One conflict to flag: the input Tags include 'Denial Of Service,' but the description and CWE-122 (heap-based buffer overflow / use-after-free) describe privilege elevation, not a DoS primitive - treat the DoS tag with caution. Net: a credible local privilege-escalation bug worth patching on the normal cycle, but not a widespread-exploitation emergency based on available signals. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A low-privileged local user (or malware already running in a limited context) crafts a malformed Universal Disk Format volume and causes the vulnerable UDFS driver to parse it, triggering a use-after-free in kernel memory that is groomed into arbitrary code execution and elevation to SYSTEM. No public proof-of-concept is referenced in the input, and exploitation requires prior local authenticated access (PR:L, AV:L) with no user interaction. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Local privilege escalation in the Windows Universal Disk Format File System Driver (UDFS.sys) allows a standard user who can get a malformed UDF volume parsed by the kernel to corrupt and then reuse freed heap memory, escaping the sandbox and running code as SYSTEM. Exploitation requires local, authenticated access (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, 7.8) and no user interaction, but there is no network vector and the attacker must already hold a foothold capable of executing code and triggering UDF parsing. Microsoft has released patched builds via the MSRC update guide; there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, no evidence of active exploitation (CISA SSVC exploitation: none), and the issue is best handled as a normal patch-cycle priority rather than an emergency.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: apply the Microsoft security update for CVE-2026-83513 from the MSRC update guide (https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-83513) and bring each host to or above its fixed build - for example 10.0.14393.9612 (Windows 10 1607 / Server 2016), 10.0.17763.9376 (Windows 10 1809 / Server 2019), 10.0.19044.7807 or 10.0.19045.7807 (Windows 10 21H2/22H2), 10.0.22631.7652 (Windows 11 23H2), 10.0.26100.9711 (Windows 11 24H2), 10.0.26100.33650 (Windows Server 2025), 10.0.26200.9711 (Windows 11 25H2), 10.0.28000.3231 (Windows 11 26H1), 10.0.26300.9711 (Windows 11 26H2), 10.0.20348.5761 (Windows Server 2022), 6.2.9200.26434 (Windows Server 2012) and 6.3.9600.23470 (Windows Server 2012 R2). Because exploitation requires an already-present local user who can cause a crafted UDF volume to be parsed, the highest-value interim controls are to keep disk-image mounting restricted to administrators and never grant standard users the right to mount ISO/VHD images or attach optical media; treat UDF images and discs from untrusted sources as hostile and block their automatic mounting, parsing, indexing or antivirus scanning on production endpoints until patched. On hosts that never consume UDF media (typical servers), the UDFS driver's start type can be set to disabled as a stop-gap - the trade-off is that UDF-formatted optical media and UDF-based ISO images will no longer be readable, and this must be reverted after patching. Detection should focus on UDFS.sys-related kernel crashes and on unexpected SYSTEM-level child processes spawned by non-privileged users who previously mounted images; no public exploit code is known at time of analysis, so prioritize patching by normal risk-based maintenance rather than emergency change.

Technical ContextAI · show details
UDFS.sys is the in-box Windows kernel-mode driver that implements the Universal Disk Format (UDF) file system used by optical media (DVD/Blu-ray) and by UDF-formatted ISO/VHD image files that Windows can mount. UDF volumes carry attacker-controllable metadata structures - volume descriptors, partition maps, directory/file entries and allocation descriptors - that the driver parses in kernel context, so any flaw in that parsing is a direct kernel-memory-safety problem. This CVE is rooted in improper memory lifetime handling during that parsing: per the CWE-122 classification and the use-after-free description, a crafted volume causes a heap buffer to be freed while a stale reference to it remains reachable, producing a use-after-free (heap overflow/out-of-bounds consequences are also tagged). Successful grooming converts the dangling reference into controlled kernel memory corruption, which a local attacker uses to elevate from a standard user token to SYSTEM. The affected code path is in a driver present by default on Windows 10/11 and Windows Server, with no non-default feature toggle required - the practical exposure is any workflow in which untrusted UDF images or optical media are mounted, parsed, indexed, scanned by antivirus, or opened by an application.

Use after free in Windows Universal Disk Format File System Driver (UDFS) allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Microsoft Windows Universal Disk Format file system driver (UDFS.sys) allows an authenticated user with existing code execution to gain SYSTEM-level privileges, potentially escaping application sandboxes and compromising affected hosts. Because exploitation requires local access and no public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified, this is a patch-cycle priority rather than an emergency, though any Windows environment hosting multiple users or untrusted workloads should treat it as a significant risk to host integrity.
