Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the target to have the Network Policy Server (NPS) role installed and reachable - i.e. a Windows Server acting as a RADIUS/NAC authentication server; hosts without NPS enabled are not exploitable. The attacker must be positioned on an adjacent network (AV:A): same Layer-2 segment, VLAN, or logically adjacent network reachable by the RADIUS/authentication protocol, not the open internet. No credentials (PR:N) and no user interaction (UI:N) are needed. The principal limiting factor is High attack complexity (AC:H): reliably triggering and weaponizing the use-after-free requires winning a race/timing window and controlling heap state, which constrains real-world exploitation despite the lack of authentication.

Impact

Signals are mixed and point to a serious-but-not-emergency priority. The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, base 7.5) describes an unauthenticated memory-corruption flaw with total confidentiality, integrity and availability impact, which aligns with CISA's SSVC Technical Impact of 'total'. However, exploitability signals temper this: the attack vector is Adjacent (AV:A), not Network, so the attacker must already hold a foothold on the same logical network segment, and Attack Complexity is High (AC:H), consistent with the difficulty of reliably winning the race/heap conditions needed to exploit a use-after-free (CWE-416). SSVC reinforces the lower-urgency read: Exploitation=none (no observed or public exploitation) and Automatable=no (cannot be reliably mass-exploited). No CISA KEV listing and no public POC were provided, and no EPSS score was supplied, so probabilistic exploitation data is simply missing rather than low. In short, this is a high-impact flaw whose real-world risk is bounded by the adjacent-only vector, high complexity, and absence of any confirmed exploitation - a strong patch priority for environments running the NPS/RADIUS role, but not a drop-everything internet-facing emergency.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who already has a presence on a network segment adjacent to a Windows Server running the Network Policy Server (RADIUS) role sends specially crafted authentication traffic to the NPS service, triggering a use-after-free condition. By grooming the heap and winning the required timing window, the attacker corrupts memory to achieve arbitrary code execution in the context of the NPS service without any credentials or user interaction. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis, and the High attack complexity means a working exploit would require significant reliability engineering.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 13, 2026

Use-after-free in Microsoft's Network Policy Server (NPS) allows an unauthenticated attacker on an adjacent network to execute arbitrary code in the context of the NPS service. Only Windows hosts that have the NPS role installed and reachable as a RADIUS/authentication server are exposed - hosts without NPS enabled cannot be triggered. Practical exploitation is constrained by high attack complexity (AC:H), since reliably winning the race/heap-shaping window is difficult, and no public exploit has been identified at time of analysis; Microsoft has released vendor patches, CISA's SSVC assessment rates exploitation as none and automatable as no, and EPSS/KEV data were not provided for this CVE.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: Microsoft has published fixes for CVE-2026-85811 through the Microsoft Security Response Center update guide at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-85811; apply the current cumulative update for your Windows build. The EUVD version ranges indicate the minimum patched builds as 6.2.9200.26434 (Windows Server 2012), 6.3.9600.23470 (Windows Server 2012 R2), 10.0.14393.9612 (Windows Server 2016 / Windows 10 1607), 10.0.17763.9376 (Windows Server 2019 / Windows 10 1809), 10.0.19044.7807 (Windows 10 21H2/22H2), 10.0.20348.5761 (Windows Server 2022), 10.0.26100.33650 (Windows Server 2025), and 10.0.22631.7652, 10.0.26100.9711, 10.0.26200.9711, 10.0.28000.3231 and 10.0.26300.9711 for Windows 11 23H2, 24H2, 25H2, 26H1 and 26H2 respectively. Until patching completes, reduce exposure by restricting RADIUS reachability: terminate UDP 1812/1813 (and any RADIUS-over-TLS/1812-1813 transport) at a firewall or access control list so only known network access servers, VPN concentrators and wireless controllers on trusted Layer-2/VLAN segments can reach the NPS host - the trade-off is that new or guest authenticators must be explicitly allow-listed and misconfigured rules can break 802.1X/VPN logon. Segment the NPS server onto a dedicated management VLAN with no direct path from client or untrusted switch ports, accepting the added routing complexity for legitimate authenticators. Where NPS is not actively used for authentication, remove the Network Policy Server role entirely (Server Manager, Remove Roles and Features) - this eliminates the attack surface but also disables any dependent 802.1X, VPN or NAP policy enforcement. Monitor NPS/System event logs and RADIUS accounting records for unexpected service crashes, which are plausible indicators that the use-after-free is being probed even if code execution fails.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Network Policy Server (NPS) is the Microsoft implementation of a RADIUS server, used for 802.1X/NAC authentication, VPN and wireless access policy enforcement, and connection request accounting on Windows Server. The flaw is a CWE-416 use-after-free: a heap-allocated object is released while a dangling reference to it remains and is subsequently dereferenced when NPS processes crafted authentication or accounting traffic. Because the freed memory can be reclaimed and reshaped by attacker-supplied data, a successful trigger can corrupt the heap and redirect execution to attacker-controlled code, which is why the assessed vector assigns full confidentiality, integrity and availability impact (C:H/I:H/A:H) despite the high attack-complexity factor. The vector AV:A/PR:N/UI:N means the attacker must sit on a Layer-2 segment, VLAN, or logically adjacent network from which RADIUS traffic reaches the NPS host - not the open internet - but requires no credentials or user interaction; AC:H reflects that triggering the use-after-free reliably demands precise timing and heap-state control. The associated Denial Of Service and Memory Corruption tags also mean that even a non-weaponized trigger can crash the NPS service, interrupting authentication for dependent clients.

DescriptionCVE.org

Use after free in Network Policy Server (NPS) allows an unauthorized attacker to execute code over an adjacent network.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Microsoft Network Policy Server (NPS) is affected by a high-severity use-after-free vulnerability (CVE-2026-85811) that could let an attacker on an adjacent network run arbitrary code as the NPS service. Only organizations that have installed the NPS role and expose it as a RADIUS or authentication server are at risk; a compromise could disrupt authentication for dependent systems and provide a foothold for lateral movement. Although no public exploit has been identified and attack complexity is high, leadership should prioritize patching for any internet- or partner-facing NPS deployments.

Attack Technique

Use-after-free vulnerabilities occur when a program continues to access memory through a pointer after that memory has been deallocated.

Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.

Denial of Service attacks render applications or systems unavailable by overwhelming resources or triggering failure conditions.
