| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires a .NET application using System.Net.Http's SocketsHttpHandler configured with a proxy that uses Basic authentication (so a Proxy-Authorization header is populated), AND an outbound HTTP request that follows a redirect to a server the attacker can observe or control. The leak occurs specifically because the Proxy-Authorization header is not stripped when the request is redirected to a different destination. Limiting factors: High attack complexity (AC:H) because the attacker must induce or exploit a redirect to an attacker-reachable destination while proxy credentials are active; the exposed secret is limited to the Basic proxy credential rather than general application data; applications not using an authenticating proxy with SocketsHttpHandler are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but moderate-priority issue, not a high-urgency emergency. All exploitation-maturity signals point the same direction and agree with the 5.9 (Medium) CVSS score: CISA SSVC lists Exploitation as 'none', Automatable as 'no', and Technical Impact as only 'partial'; there is no CISA KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept in the provided data, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'. The CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N) describes a network, unauthenticated vector but with High attack complexity, which is the dominant limiter here - the attacker must win a specific condition race (a request that follows a redirect to a server they control while a Basic Proxy-Authorization header is set). Impact is confidentiality-only (C:H, I:N, A:N): the GHSA advisory confirms the leaked data is Basic proxy credentials, not arbitrary secrets, so the C:H rating is arguably generous for a single credential class but defensible. No EPSS score was provided, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be independently weighed; given SSVC 'Exploitation: none' and 'Automatable: no', real-world risk is best read as low-to-moderate and opportunistic rather than widespread or automatable. Net: patch on a normal cadence; this is not a drop-everything flaw. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A .NET application uses SocketsHttpHandler configured with an HTTP proxy that requires Basic authentication, and makes an outbound request that an attacker can cause to redirect (e.g., to an attacker-controlled destination). Because the handler retains the Proxy-Authorization header across the redirect, the base64-encoded proxy credentials are sent to the destination server, where the attacker captures them. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the High attack complexity means the attacker must influence the redirect target while proxy auth is active. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Information disclosure in .NET's System.Net.Http affects applications that use SocketsHttpHandler with an authenticating proxy, because the Proxy-Authorization header is retained when an outbound request is redirected and is then sent to the redirect destination, exposing Basic proxy credentials to a server the attacker can observe or control. Affected runtimes are .NET 8.0 before 8.0.32, 9.0 before 9.0.21, 10.0 before 10.0.13 and 11.0 before 11.0.0-rc.2, with Visual Studio 2022 17.14 before 17.14.42 and Visual Studio 2026 18.10 before 18.10.4 shipping the same component; the CVSS 3.1 vector is AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N (5.9), reflecting high attack complexity rather than any authentication requirement. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis - CISA's SSVC assessment rates exploitation as none and automatable as no - but the severity comes from a leaked credential, not from any integrity or availability impact, and the exposure is limited to the proxy secret rather than general application data.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to .NET 8.0.32, .NET 9.0.21, .NET 10.0.13 or .NET 11.0.0-rc.2 (and to Microsoft Visual Studio 2022 17.14.42 or Visual Studio 2026 18.10.4 for the IDE), or update the corresponding Microsoft.NETCore.App.Runtime.* NuGet packages to 9.0.21; see the MSRC update guide at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-66822 and the upstream advisory GHSA-wxxw-5cvc-53j7 at https://github.com/dotnet/runtime/security/advisories/GHSA-wxxw-5cvc-53j7. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, the effective compensating control is to stop the credential from travelling on redirected requests: set AllowAutoRedirect to false on the SocketsHttpHandler or HttpClientHandler and follow redirects manually, re-validating the target and constructing a fresh request without the Proxy-Authorization header (trade-off: application code must implement its own redirect logic and hop limits, and any redirect handling that does not re-add legitimate headers can break upstream services). Alternative mitigations include replacing proxy Basic authentication with an authentication scheme whose credentials are not replayable static secrets such as NTLM or Kerberos where the proxy supports it, or restricting outbound traffic so that only trusted destinations can be reached and redirects to arbitrary hosts are blocked at the network egress layer (trade-off: reduced flexibility and possible breakage of legitimate third-party integrations). Rotating the proxy credentials is advisable for any deployment known to have followed redirects through an authenticating proxy, since the secret may already have been disclosed. If a handler-level or credential-level workaround has been applied, it should be reverted once the patched runtime is deployed so that normal proxy authentication behavior is restored.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw resides in System.Net.Http, specifically in SocketsHttpHandler, the default HTTP message handler used by HttpClient on modern .NET (core) targets across Windows, Linux and macOS. Per RFC 9110/7235, a Proxy-Authorization header is hop-by-hop and scoped to the proxy, so it must never be forwarded to an origin server or to a different destination. When SocketsHttpHandler processes a 3xx redirect, correct behavior would strip that header before reissuing the request to the new URI; instead the header is carried over, causing the client to transmit the proxy credential (typically a Base64-encoded Basic credential) to the redirect target. This is CWE-201, insertion of sensitive information into sent data: a secret is embedded into an outbound request that should not contain it. The bug affects both the shared runtime and the NuGet runtime packages, for example Microsoft.NETCore.App.Runtime.linux-x64, linux-arm64, linux-musl-*, osx-arm64, osx-x64 and win-* in the 9.0.0-9.0.20 range, all fixed in 9.0.21. Because the conditions require a proxy configured with Basic authentication plus a redirect to an attacker-reachable destination, the assessed complexity is high (AC:H), and applications that do not route requests through an authenticating proxy with SocketsHttpHandler are not exposed.
