MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the attacker to already have local, authenticated low-privilege code execution on the affected Windows system (PR:L, AV:L) and to invoke the specific Secure Kernel Mode (Virtualization-Based Security / VSM) code path affected by the type confusion; there is no remote or network-facing vector and no user interaction is needed. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: the attacker must first obtain a foothold with valid local privileges, the impact is confined to information disclosure (no integrity or availability impact), and only Windows builds below the patched versions listed in EUVD-2026-99134 (e.g., Windows 11 24H2 <10.0.26100.9711, Server 2025 <10.0.26100.33650, Server 2019 <10.0.17763.9376) are vulnerable. |
| Impact | This is a genuinely medium-severity, low-priority issue rather than an emergency. The provided CVSS:3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N = 5.5) describes a locally-exploitable information-disclosure flaw that requires the attacker to already possess low-level (authenticated) privileges on the target host; there is no network attack surface and no integrity or availability impact. All real-world exploitation signals align and reinforce this low-urgency picture: the CISA SSVC decision framework reports Exploitation=none (no observed or expected exploitation), Automatable=no, and Technical Impact=partial, and there is no CISA KEV listing and no public proof-of-concept - i.e., no public exploit identified at time of analysis. No EPSS score was provided in the input, so probabilistic exploitation likelihood cannot be quantified here. The only elevating factors are the high confidentiality impact (C:H, kernel memory disclosure) and the ubiquity of Windows; however, the local vector and prior-privilege requirement make this a credential/foothold-dependent secondary capability (e.g., for defeating KASLR or reading secrets after initial compromise) rather than a standalone priority. Patch during the normal cycle. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who has already gained the ability to run code on a Windows host as a low-privileged authenticated user triggers the type-confusion flaw in Secure Kernel Mode to read memory that should be isolated from them. This is a local-only, AC:L operation requiring no user interaction, but it yields only information disclosure (C:H, no I/A), making it most useful as a post-foothold step to leak kernel addresses or secrets. No public exploit code or active exploitation has been identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 14, 2026
Local information disclosure in Windows Secure Kernel Mode (the Virtualization-Based Security / VTL1 secure kernel) affects Windows 10, Windows 11 from 23H2 through 26H1/26H2, and Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025. An attacker who already holds authenticated low-privileged local code execution on the host can force a type-confused resource access in the Secure Kernel path and read data they should not be able to reach, resulting in high-confidentiality impact with no integrity or availability effect. There is no remote or network-facing vector and no user interaction; no public exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, CISA's SSVC rates exploitation as 'none' with automability 'no', and Microsoft has released patched build updates.

Vendor-released patch is available: apply the Microsoft security update resolving CVE-2026-70017 so that affected hosts reach or exceed the fixed builds - Windows 10 21H2/22H2 10.0.19044.7807, Windows 11 23H2 10.0.22631.7652, Windows 11 24H2 10.0.26100.9711, Windows 11 25H2 10.0.26200.9711, Windows 11 26H1 10.0.28000.3231, Windows 11 26H2 10.0.26300.9711, Windows Server 2019 / Windows 10 1809 10.0.17763.9376, Windows Server 2022 10.0.20348.5761, and Windows Server 2025 10.0.26100.33650 - following the guidance at https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/vulnerability/CVE-2026-70017 and tracking the EUVD record at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-70017. Because exploitation requires an attacker to already hold authenticated low-privileged local code execution, patch deployment can follow a routine monthly cycle rather than emergency change control; prioritize systems where untrusted local code commonly runs (multi-tenant hosts, developer workstations, jump boxes). Compensating controls are limited and largely trade one risk for another: disabling Virtualization-Based Security / HVCI removes the Secure Kernel (VTL1) attack surface entirely, but also removes the credential-theft and kernel-tampering protections VBS provides, so it should only be used as a short-term measure on hosts where the update cannot be applied. Standard hardening applies in parallel - enforce least privilege so low-privileged local code execution is harder to obtain, restrict interactive logon and local admin rights, and monitor for anomalous secure-kernel-related crash or telemetry patterns. No publicly available exploit code has been identified at time of analysis, so no additional signature-level mitigation is currently required.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is CWE-843, access of a resource using an incompatible type (type confusion), inside Windows Secure Kernel Mode. Secure Kernel Mode is the higher-privilege VTL1 execution environment created by Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) and Hyper-V, running alongside the ordinary NT kernel at VTL0; it hosts secure system calls, secure memory pools, and code-integrity services that a normal kernel-mode compromise is not supposed to reach. A type confusion here means a resource (for example, an object, buffer descriptor, or structure handle) is interpreted as a different type than it actually is, so length, tag, or layout assumptions no longer hold and the secure kernel reads out of the intended object. Because the affected code path is reachable only through local VTL0-to-VTL1 interfaces, the vector is AV:L/PR:L with UI:N, and the outcome is disclosure of secure kernel memory (C:H) without modification or denial of service (I:N/A:N). Microsoft classifies it as an information-disclosure / memory-corruption issue; EUVD-2026-99134 tracks the same flaw as ENISA's record.

Attack Technique
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.
