Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to already possess a valid authenticated Nginx UI session (PR:L) belonging to an OTP-enabled user, and targets the specific mutation routes that were missing the RequireSecureSession middleware: backup creation (GET /backup) and automatic-backup management (POST /auto_backup, POST/DELETE/PATCH /auto_backup/:id, POST /auto_backup/test_s3), plus the described DNS credential/record, certificate, ACME user, Nginx control, and site/stream automation endpoints. The limiting factor is that this is a step-up (OTP/passkey) bypass, not an authentication bypass - the normal session login is still required; the flaw only removes the fresh X-Secure-Session-ID re-verification expected for sensitive actions. Only versions prior to 2.4.1 are affected, and the condition specifically involves OTP-enabled accounts for which the secure-session step-up was supposed to apply.

Impact

The CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:H, base 8.3) indicates a low-complexity, network-reachable flaw requiring low privileges (PR:L) and no user interaction, with high integrity and availability impact - consistent with the description of an authorization/step-up bypass on sensitive mutation routes (CWE-862). This is a privilege/authorization control failure rather than a full pre-auth RCE: the attacker must already hold a valid authenticated session, which is why PR is Low, not None. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, SSVC decision, or public POC was provided in the input, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The only exploitation artifact is the vendor fix commit itself, which confirms the defect but is not an attack tool. Net: this is a genuine security hardening gap that elevates the impact of any session compromise, but its real-world priority is moderated by the precondition of an already-stolen authenticated session and the absence of any exploitation-probability or active-exploitation signals - treat as a solid-priority patch for exposed Nginx UI instances rather than an emergency mass-exploitation event.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who obtains a valid authenticated Nginx UI session for an OTP-enabled user (e.g. via a stolen JWT, XSS, or session hijacking) replays that session against sensitive mutation endpoints such as /auto_backup or backup creation. Because RequireSecureSession is not enforced on those routes, the attacker performs high-impact changes - creating/altering automatic backups, DNS credentials and records, certificates, ACME users, and Nginx control settings - without ever completing the OTP or passkey step-up. No public POC was identified, though the fix commit (23d1934) clearly documents the vulnerable routes.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026

Nginx UI versions prior to 2.4.1 fail to enforce the RequireSecureSession step-up check on multiple authenticated mutation endpoints, so an attacker who already holds a valid session token for an OTP- or passkey-enabled account can create or modify automatic backups, DNS credentials and records, certificates and ACME users, Nginx control settings, and site or stream automation without ever supplying a fresh X-Secure-Session-ID. The flaw is a missing-authorization-check class issue (CWE-862) rated CVSS 3.1 base 8.3 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:H): it requires a stolen or otherwise obtained authenticated session (PR:L) but no user interaction, giving high integrity and availability impact. No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis and there is no indication the issue is being actively exploited; the upstream fix is available in release 2.4.1.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade Nginx UI to 2.4.1 or later (https://github.com/0xJacky/nginx-ui/releases/tag/v2.4.1), which attaches middleware.RequireSecureSession() to the backup and auto-backup mutation routes as shown in commit 23d1934099b05b2a01589b48129dc3d3159d91c2; see the advisory at https://github.com/0xJacky/nginx-ui/security/advisories/GHSA-5v7c-xpfp-p65m for the complete list of remediated endpoints. Until the upgrade can be applied, treat Nginx UI sessions for OTP-enabled accounts as fully privileged: revoke and rotate all active JWT/auth tokens, invalidate any stored DNS credentials, ACME accounts and certificate material that may have been touched, and require re-login. Compensating controls include restricting the Nginx UI management interface to a trusted network or VPN and reverse-proxying it behind authentication with IP allowlisting - the trade-off is reduced administrative accessibility and dependence on the proxy as a second line of defence, since the application-level step-up cannot be reliably emulated externally. Administrators unable to isolate the UI should monitor backup, DNS, certificate and Nginx control audit logs for unexpected changes made with sessions that never completed an OTP/passkey challenge.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Nginx UI is a Go/Gin based web administration front end for the Nginx web server that exposes REST endpoints for backup management, DNS record and credential handling, certificate and ACME account provisioning, Nginx process control, and site/stream automation. The project implements a two-tier session model: a normal JWT-based authentication middleware (AuthRequired) plus a middleware.RequireSecureSession() guard that is meant to be attached to sensitive mutation routes, requiring OTP- or passkey-enabled accounts to present a fresh X-Secure-Session-ID header proving recent re-authentication. The commit diff for 23d1934 shows that the backup routes were registered without that guard - for example r.POST("/auto_backup", CreateAutoBackup) and the related POST/DELETE/PATCH /auto_backup/:id and /auto_backup/test_s3 handlers, plus GET /backup - and were converted to a group carrying middleware.RequireSecureSession(). New regression tests (api/backup/security_test.go) confirm the intended behaviour: an OTP-enabled user's JWT alone returns HTTP 401 on those endpoints after the fix. Root cause is CWE-862 Missing Authorization: the step-up requirement was simply not applied to the affected routes, so possessing a valid session token is sufficient to invoke state-changing operations that were designed to demand fresh OTP/passkey verification. Affected CPE product: 0xjacky:nginx-ui, all versions prior to 2.4.1.

DescriptionCVE.org

Nginx UI is a web user interface for the Nginx web server. Prior to 2.4.1, Nginx UI does not apply RequireSecureSession to multiple authenticated mutation routes even though OTP-enabled users are expected to present a fresh X-Secure-Session-ID for sensitive actions. A stolen authenticated session can therefore create or alter automatic backups, DNS credentials and records, certificates and ACME users, Nginx control settings, and site or stream automation without completing the OTP or passkey step-up. This issue is fixed in version 2.4.1.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

Nginx UI, a web-based management console for Nginx, fails to re-verify user identity on a range of administrative operations in all versions prior to 2.4.1, meaning anyone who obtains a valid session token can silently alter backups, DNS records, TLS certificates, and core web server configuration as if they were the legitimate administrator. Because this console sits on top of internet-facing web infrastructure, the exposure is to the organization's public presence and service availability rather than to end-user data. Leadership should care because the vulnerability is remotely reachable, requires no user interaction, and can be exploited with credentials that are frequently leaked, shared, or stolen through unrelated phishing and malware campaigns.
