| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target Kamailio server to have the optional sipt module loaded and its SIP-T/ISUP parsing functions invoked from the kamailio.cfg routing script on attacker-supplied SIP traffic - i.e., a SIP-to-SS7/ISUP interworking or gateway deployment. The specific trigger is a malformed ISUP calling/called/redirecting-party parameter whose declared length exceeds the 26-byte static buffer, which pre-6.0.8/6.1.4 code copied without validating sbparamlen against the packet length. Limiting factors: the sipt module is not loaded in default Kamailio configurations, so pure SIP proxy/registrar deployments are unaffected; impact is confined to a crash/denial of service, and no authentication is indicated by the vector (PR:N) though reachability depends on this non-default configuration. |
| Impact | The input CVSS 4.0 vector (CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) scores 6.9 (medium), but the impact metrics tell the real story: only VA:L is set, with VC:N/VI:N/VA:L and no subsequent-system impact, meaning this is a pure availability (crash/DoS) issue - not confidentiality loss or code execution, despite being a CWE-120 buffer overflow. The source evidence supports this: the overflow is of a small static char buffer (sb_s_buf[26]) during ISUP parameter parsing, and the fix adds length validation and bounded null-termination rather than addressing any control-flow hijack, so arbitrary code execution is not demonstrated by the available data. On exploitation signals the picture is low-urgency: no CISA KEV listing, no EPSS probability supplied, and no public proof-of-concept referenced (only VulDB entries and the GitHub patch) - so this is no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Net: this is a high-CVSS-looking-but-moderate-real-risk issue, and real risk is further bounded because it only affects deployments that load the optional sipt (SIP-T/SS7) module. Note the apparent tension - AV:N/PR:N implies trivial remote unauthenticated reach, yet reaching the vulnerable code in practice requires a non-default module and routing-script usage, which the base vector does not capture; treat raw reachability as conditional. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who can reach a Kamailio instance that has the sipt module loaded and is performing SIP-T/SS7 interworking sends a SIP message carrying a crafted ISUP body whose calling/called-party parameter declares an oversized length. The sipt parser (isup_get_calling_party) copies the attacker-controlled data past the fixed 26-byte static buffer, corrupting adjacent memory and crashing the server. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, so this scenario is inferred from the description and the patch diff rather than a demonstrated PoC. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 12, 2026
A heap/stack-adjacent buffer overflow in Kamailio's optional sipt module lets remote, unauthenticated attackers crash the SIP server by sending crafted SIP-T/ISUP messages. The flaw lives in isup_get_calling_party() (and the sibling called/redirecting/redirection parses) in src/modules/sipt/ss7_parser.c, where a declared ISUP parameter length is copied into a fixed 26-byte static buffer without being checked against the actual packet length; affected releases are Kamailio up to and including 6.0.7 and 6.1.3. Per independent assessment the realistic impact is availability only (CVSS:3.1 C:N/I:N/A:L), not code execution, and exploitation requires the non-default sipt module to be loaded and its parsing functions invoked from kamailio.cfg on attacker-supplied SIP traffic; vendor-released patches exist in 6.0.8/6.1.4 (commit 3667bebf8d0bea07ed16218fd921d07db87aeb21, PR #4905), and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Kamailio 6.0.8 or 6.1.4, which contain the vendor fix for this issue (upstream commit 3667bebf8d0bea07ed16218fd921d07db87aeb21, PR https://github.com/kamailio/kamailio/pull/4905; release artifacts at https://github.com/kamailio/kamailio/releases/tag/6.0.8); if you build from source, backport that commit onto any custom branch. Where an upgrade cannot be performed promptly, the highest-value compensating control is to remove the 'loadmodule "sipt.so"' directive from kamailio.cfg (or disable the specific ISUP parsing route blocks that call isup_get_calling_party/peer functions), which fully closes the attack surface at the cost of losing SIP-T/SS7 interworking - acceptable for deployments that are pure SIP proxies, registrars, or media relays and do not need ISUP translation. Deployments that must keep the module can reduce exposure by restricting SIP ingress with ACLs, TLS/SIPS, or firewall rules so that untrusted sources cannot reach the ISUP-processing routes, and by fronting Kamailio with a SIP-aware edge (e.g., SBC) that normalizes or drops malformed SIP-T bodies; both measures reduce but do not eliminate the risk because a syntactically valid SIP peer still reaches the parser. Restart supervision (systemd Restart=always, Kamailio watchdog/corerouter monitoring) limits the operational duration of any crash-induced outage but does not prevent the trigger. Technical ContextAI · show details
Kamailio is an open-source SIP server; its sipt module bridges SIP to SS7/ISUP signalling (SIP-T), parsing ISUP messages carried in SIP bodies. The vulnerable routines (isup_get_calling_party, isup_get_called_party, isup_get_redirection_number, isup_get_redirecting_number, and related helpers) incrementally copy digits into a caller-supplied static buffer declared in src/modules/sipt/sipt.c as 'static char sb_s_buf[26]'. CWE-120 (classic buffer copy without checking size of input) arises because the code used the ISUP-parameter-declared length (sbparamlen) and offset arithmetic without validating that offset + 4 + sbparamlen stayed within the received packet length 'len', and without bounding the write index against the 26-byte destination. The upstream patch (PR #4905, commit 3667bebf) introduces a MAX_SB_BUF_LEN constant, rejects malformed parameter lengths (sbparamlen <= 0 or offset + 4 + sbparamlen > len), breaks loops when the destination index plus two would exceed MAX_SB_BUF_LEN or when the read would run past the packet, and replaces the unconditional null-terminator write with a bounds-checked version that clamps to MAX_SB_BUF_LEN - 1. Although the underlying defect class is a buffer overflow, the assessed outcome is memory corruption leading to a crash/denial of service rather than confidentiality or integrity loss, because the overflow is confined to a small fixed buffer and no control-flow or code-execution primitive is established.

DescriptionCVE.org
A vulnerability was detected in Kamailio up to 6.0.7/6.1.3. The affected element is the function isup_get_calling_party of the file src/modules/sipt/ss7_parser.c of the component sipt Module. The manipulation of the argument length results in buffer overflow. The attack may be performed from remote. Upgrading to version 6.0.8 and 6.1.4 is sufficient to fix this issue. The patch is identified as 3667bebf8d0bea07ed16218fd921d07db87aeb21. Upgrading the affected component is advised.
