Network-reachable proxy (AV:N), reliable normalization trick (AC:L), requires a low-privilege authenticated session (PR:L); admin endpoints yield high confidentiality/integrity impact but no direct availability loss (A:N).

3DescriptionCVE.org
Malcolm's nginx based reverse proxy contains a URL path normalization inconsistency between its Lua based role-based access control (RBAC) authorization layer and nginx's own request routing logic. An authenticated user can craft a specially formatted request path to bypass role-based restrictions and reach administrative or role gated endpoints they should not have access to. This affects all restricted paths protected by the RBAC authorization layer, including file upload, PHP server, htadmin, and authentication management interfaces.

AnalysisAI
Malcolm, CISA's open-source network traffic analysis platform, ships an nginx-based reverse proxy whose Lua RBAC authorization layer and nginx's request routing normalize crafted URL paths differently, letting an authenticated user at any privilege level slip past role-based restrictions and reach administrative or role-gated endpoints. Rated CVSS 8.1 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N), the flaw yields high confidentiality and integrity impact against every RBAC-protected path - file upload, the PHP server, htadmin, and authentication management interfaces - while requiring only network reachability plus a valid low-privilege account (PR:L), with no user interaction. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires (1) a valid authenticated Malcolm account at any privilege level - the flaw escalates a low-privilege user past RBAC rather than granting anonymous access (PR:L) - and (2) network reachability to Malcolm's nginx-based reverse proxy. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine priority, not a CVSS-inflated paper risk. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Patch status is not pinned to an exact fixed version in the provided intelligence; the authoritative guidance is the vendor security advisory at https://github.com/cisagov/Malcolm/security/advisories/GHSA-v66f-cwcm-hf73 and the ICS-CERT advisory ICSA-26-280-01 at https://github.com/cisagov/CSAF/blob/develop/csaf_files/OT/white/2026/icsa-26-280-01.json - treat an updated Malcolm release or proxy configuration referenced there as the primary fix, and verify the deployed container/image digest rather than assuming a rebuild picks it up. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, restrict network access to the Malcolm nginx reverse proxy to trusted management networks, enforce multi-factor authentication, and monitor for anomalous requests to administrative endpoints. …
