2DescriptionCVE.org
Malcolm's upload-processing pipeline (scripts/safe-extract.py) enforces entry-count, nesting-depth, and total-uncompressed-byte limits when extracting container archives (zip/tar/rar/7z via libarchive), but those limits are not applied when the uploaded file is a single-stream compressed format (.gz, .bz2, .xz, .lzma, .lz) that isn't a .tar.*-style archive. Any authenticated user permitted to upload PCAP/log files can upload a small, highly compressible file (e.g. a gzip bomb) that decompresses to an effectively unbounded size on disk, exhausting the shared Docker volume used by OpenSearch, Logstash, Arkime, and Zeek, and disrupting the platform for all users.
AnalysisAI
Malcolm's upload-processing pipeline allows an authenticated user with PCAP/log upload rights to exhaust the shared Docker volume by submitting a small single-stream compressed file (e.g., .gz, .bz2, .xz, .lzma, .lz) that decompresses to an effectively unbounded size. The flaw, CWE-409 decompression bomb, bypasses the entry-count, nesting-depth, and uncompressed-byte limits that scripts/safe-extract.py applies only to container archives (zip/tar/rar/7z via libarchive), causing disk exhaustion that disrupts OpenSearch, Logstash, Arkime, and Zeek for all users. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires an authenticated account that has been granted permission to upload PCAP/log files into Malcolm's upload-processing pipeline. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine but moderate-severity availability issue, correctly scored at CVSS 6.5 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) with CWE-409 (data amplification / decompression bomb). … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
