MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires an authenticated Kubernetes user who holds UPDATE/patch permission on workload objects (deployments, replicasets, statefulsets, daemonsets, jobs, or cronjobs) in a cluster where YuniKorn (≤1.9.0) performs admission control for queue placement and quota. The attacker must first create a workload and then modify it via UPDATE - the CREATE path correctly enforces label and user-annotation checks, so the bypass only exists on the UPDATE action (the vendor's UI:P/AT:P reflect this staged, update-triggered precondition). The attack has practical value only in multi-tenant deployments that rely on YuniKorn queues and user-based quota as an isolation/governance boundary; in single-tenant or fully trusted-user clusters there is no meaningful boundary to cross. Limiting factors: requires existing RBAC to update workloads, impact is confined to queue placement and quota accounting (no host/data compromise), and clusters on 1.10.0+ are not affected. |
| Impact | This is a low-severity authorization/admission-control bypass in Apache YuniKorn, not a code-execution or data-disclosure flaw. The only severity signal provided is the vendor's CVSS 4.0 base score of 2.0 (low) with vector CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:P/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N - network reachable but gated behind a present attack requirement (AT:P), high privileges (PR:H), and passive user interaction (UI:P), with only limited integrity impact and no confidentiality or availability impact. No EPSS score, CISA KEV listing, POC reference, or SSVC decision was supplied, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The real-world risk is low and multi-tenant/governance-oriented: the flaw lets an authenticated user who can UPDATE workloads escape the label and user-annotation checks that CREATE enforces, spoofing user info or rewriting the application ID to land work in a queue they should not reach or to evade user-based quota tracking. This is a priority chiefly for operators of shared, multi-tenant YuniKorn clusters relying on queue/quota isolation as a security boundary; for single-tenant or trusted-user clusters it is largely a correctness issue. The signals are internally consistent (all low, no exploitation intelligence), so there is no conflicting high-CVSS-but-low-risk tension to flag here. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A legitimate but low-privilege tenant in a shared Kubernetes cluster submits a compliant workload via CREATE (which passes checks), then issues an UPDATE to a deployment, job, or statefulset that injects a forged user-info annotation and changes the application ID. Because UPDATE skips the label/annotation validation, the workload is admitted into a higher-priority or better-resourced queue the user is not entitled to, and the user's quota accounting is bypassed. No public POC is referenced, but the technique is straightforward for anyone already authorized to patch their own workload objects. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Admission-control bypass in Apache YuniKorn 1.9.0 and earlier allows an authenticated Kubernetes user who holds UPDATE/patch permission on workload objects (deployments, replicasets, statefulsets, daemonsets, jobs, cronjobs) to set an arbitrary user-info annotation and rewrite the workload's application ID, potentially gaining placement into a queue the user would not normally be entitled to and sidestepping user-based quota accounting. The CREATE path correctly enforces the label and user-annotation checks, so the flaw exists only on the UPDATE action, meaning an attacker must first create a workload and then modify it - reflected in the vendor CVSS 4.0 base of 2.0 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:P, integrity-only) and in the independent assessment (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N). Impact is confined to multi-tenant queue isolation and quota governance with no host, data, or code-execution exposure; no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The issue is tracked as YUNIKORN-3473 and fixed in YuniKorn 1.10.0 (also landed in the 1.11.0 fix version) via GitHub PR #1106.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Apache YuniKorn 1.10.0 (the release that fixes this issue) or to 1.11.0; both are recorded as fix versions for YUNIKORN-3473, and the upstream change is available as GitHub PR #1106 (per the issue's pull-request-available label). Vendor-released patch: 1.10.0. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls are: (1) tighten Kubernetes RBAC so that UPDATE/patch on deployments, replicasets, statefulsets, daemonsets, jobs, and cronjobs is restricted to trusted principals only - the trade-off is that this can break legitimate CI/CD pipelines that mutate live workloads, so those service accounts should be enumerated and exempted deliberately rather than leaving broad write access; (2) enforce a ValidatingAdmissionWebhook or policy engine (OPA Gatekeeper, Kyverno) that pins the YuniKorn user-info annotation and the application/queue ID on UPDATE so they cannot diverge from the values set at CREATE - this adds admission latency and needs maintenance but directly closes the bypass; (3) on 1.9.0 and earlier, avoid treating user-info annotations as a trustworthy tenant boundary and monitor queue placement and quota consumption for workloads whose annotation or application ID changed after creation. None of these controls removes the underlying code defect, so upgrading to 1.10.0+ remains the primary fix; full details are in the advisory references at https://yunikorn.apache.org, https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YUNIKORN-3473, and https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2026/q4/84.

Technical ContextAI · show details
Apache YuniKorn is a Kubernetes-native resource scheduler that replaces or supplements the default kube-scheduler with hierarchical resource queues, quota enforcement, fairness/ordering policies, and preemption. Its k8shim component (the component flagged in the upstream JIRA issue) does not schedule raw pods for templated objects but instead creates workloads derived from the templates of deployments, replicasets, statefulsets, daemonsets, jobs, and cronjobs; those workloads carry labels and a user-info annotation that YuniKorn uses both to authorize/target queue placement and to attribute resource consumption for user-based quota. The root cause is an authorization-check omission of the incorrect-authorization class: the workload CREATE handler validates labels and user annotations, but the newly added workload UPDATE handler did not, so a mutation of an existing workload slips past the same validation. Because queue selection and per-user quota accounting both key off the mutable user annotation and application ID, bypassing the check on UPDATE effectively lets a user re-map a workload into an unauthorized queue and/or desynchronize quota tracking from the actual user. This is a governance/isolation boundary defect rather than a memory-safety or code-execution issue; the practical exposure scales with how strictly a cluster relies on YuniKorn queues and user annotations as a tenant boundary, and disappears entirely once the object passes through the corrected validation path in 1.10.0+.

Executive ViewAI
Apache YuniKorn deployments running version 1.9.0 or earlier contain an admission-control bypass that allows an already-authenticated Kubernetes user with workload modification rights to place workloads into queues they are not entitled to, defeating the tenant isolation and quota fairness that multi-team clusters rely on. The exposure is limited to scheduling placement and quota accounting integrity - there is no host compromise, data disclosure, or code execution path - so the primary business risk is misallocated compute, broken chargeback/showback accuracy, and erosion of trust in tenant segregation. Leadership should prioritize this if YuniKorn governs shared clusters across business units with quota or cost-accounting controls.
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis. Interim mitigations: (1) restrict update/patch rights on deployments, replicasets, statefulsets, daemonsets, jobs, and cronjobs to platform-owned service accounts only; (2) enforce a Kyverno or OPA Gatekeeper policy that blocks addition or modification of the YuniKorn user-info annotation and application ID on UPDATE/PATCH operations; (3) monitor and alert on audit-log entries where workload user annotations or application IDs change after creation; (4) reduce the number of YuniKorn-managed queues carrying hard quota guarantees until the fix is available; (5) upgrade to the vendor-fixed release as soon as it is published.
