2 techniques across 2 tactics: Collection, Discovery The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitable by sending a GET request to a user/organization profile route (/{username}) with an 'Accept: application/rss+xml' or 'Accept: application/atom+xml' header, which reaches the profile-feed handler that lacked the visibility check. It works against limited/private users and private organizations and even when the '[other] ENABLE_FEED' setting is disabled, so no special server configuration is required. Limiting factors: only profile details, user/org existence, and already-public activity are exposed, while activity in private repositories is NOT returned, capping impact at metadata/enumeration. Affects Gitea versions through 28.0.0; fixed in 28.1.0. |
| Impact | This is a low-severity information-disclosure issue (CWE-200) that is genuinely a low real-world priority. Most risk signals align downward: EPSS is 0.15% (3rd percentile), it is NOT listed in CISA KEV, and SSVC rates exploitation as 'none', automatable as 'no', and technical impact as only 'partial'. The provided CVSS is 4.3 with confidentiality-only impact (C:L, I:N, A:N). However, there is a notable conflict between signals: the supplied CVSS vector states PR:L (authenticated attacker required), yet the description explicitly says 'Anonymous users, restricted users and non-members' could exploit it, implying PR:N (unauthenticated). This contradiction suggests the vendor vector slightly understates exposure, since an unauthenticated enumeration primitive is somewhat more concerning than PR:L implies; verify the authentication requirement against the vendor advisory. That said, the impact ceiling remains low because only profile metadata, existence confirmation, and already-public activity leak, and activity in private repositories is explicitly excluded. Net: a real but minor privacy/enumeration bug, not an urgent patch-now priority except where Gitea's private-user/private-org visibility is relied upon as a security boundary. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An unauthenticated attacker wanting to confirm whether a specific private Gitea user or private organization exists sends GET /{username} with an 'Accept: application/rss+xml' header instead of browsing the correctly protected profile page or .rss/.atom routes. The server returns the owner's activity feed and profile details, bypassing the visibility check even when [other] ENABLE_FEED is disabled. No public exploit code is identified, but the technique is trivially reproducible from the description with a single crafted request. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 07, 2026
Gitea through 28.0.0 fails to apply profile visibility checks when a profile page is requested through content negotiation, allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to confirm the existence of limited or private users and private organizations and to read their profile details and public activity feed. A simple GET request to /{username} carrying an 'Accept: application/rss+xml' or 'Accept: application/atom+xml' header bypasses the checks used by the normal profile page and the explicit .rss/.atom routes, and the bypass also works when the '[other] ENABLE_FEED' setting is turned off; activity in private repositories is not disclosed. There is no public exploit code and no indication of active exploitation (EPSS 0.15%, 3rd percentile), so real-world risk is low, and the issue is fixed in Gitea 28.1.0.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Gitea 28.1.0 or later, which is the vendor-released patch containing the visibility and EnableFeed checks in the profile feed handler; the release notes are at https://blog.gitea.com/release-of-28.1.0/ and the advisory at https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/security/advisories/GHSA-hf55-9cwq-2x64 (the code changes are in PRs https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/pull/39501 and https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/pull/39507). Because the flaw is reachable unauthenticated through content negotiation, disabling the ENABLE_FEED option is not a valid workaround - the fix guards that setting too. If upgrading immediately is not possible, compensate at the reverse proxy or WAF by blocking or stripping requests to single-segment profile paths ('/{username}') whose Accept header contains 'application/rss+xml' or 'application/atom+xml'; the trade-off is that legitimate feed readers using content negotiation break, although the legacy /{username}.rss and /{username}.atom routes remain usable and still enforce visibility. Requiring authentication for the /{username} profile route also closes the anonymous enumeration path, but it does not stop authenticated restricted or non-member users from confirming private users and organizations, so it should be treated as a partial mitigation only. Given the low EPSS score and the fact that private-repository activity is not exposed, remediation can be scheduled in a normal maintenance window.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor) rooted in inconsistent authorization across content-negotiation paths. Gitea's web router exposes profile feeds in two ways: explicit suffixed routes (/user.rss, /user.atom) that performed visibility checks, and the generic /{username} profile route, where the handler in routers/web/feed/profile.go (ShowUserFeedAtom) selected the feed handler based on the client's 'Accept' header without re-running the visibility logic used by the HTML profile view. Because the feed handler only computed 'includePrivate' for the signed-in owner or an administrator, it emitted the owner's public activity feed and profile metadata to anonymous, restricted, and non-member callers regardless of the target being a limited/private user or a private organization. The fix adds guards in ShowUserFeedAtom that return 404 when setting.Other.EnableFeed is false, when organization.HasOrgOrUserVisible reports no visibility for the viewer on an organization, or when user_model.IsUserVisibleToViewer denies access to a user, before the feed is generated. Note that the referenced pull requests bundle this feed fix with unrelated hardening changes (LFS/user-content serving, push-mirror permission checks and a new DisableNewPush guard, OAuth refresh-token kind validation, issue-attachment ownership, and release/tag deletion), so only the routers/web/feed/profile.go hunk is relevant to this CVE. No CPE strings were supplied; per the EUVD record the affected range is Gitea 0 through 28.0.0, fixed in 28.1.0.

2DescriptionCVE.org
Requesting a user or organization profile page (GET /{username}) with an Accept: application/rss+xml or Accept: application/atom+xml header returned the owner's activity feed without the visibility check that the profile page and the .rss and .atom routes apply. Anonymous users, restricted users and non-members could confirm the existence of limited or private users and private organizations and read their profile details and public activity, also when [other] ENABLE_FEED was disabled. Activity in private repositories was not included.
