ZITADEL 3.0.0 through 3.4.15 and 4.0.0 before 4.17.3 creates links between user accounts and external identity providers without verifying a primary factor or the caller's permission, including on identify-only Login V2 sessions and via the User Service V2 AddIDPLink endpoint. An unauthenticated attacker knowing a victim's login name can bind their own external IdP identity to the victim's account and then sign in as the victim.
AnalysisAI
Account takeover in ZITADEL affects instances running 3.0.0 through 3.4.15 and 4.0.0 before 4.17.3: an unauthenticated remote attacker who knows a victim's login name can bind an external identity provider (IdP) identity they control to the victim's account and then sign in as that user, obtaining full control of the account and its data. The root cause is that the account-to-IdP linking flow neither verifies a primary authentication factor nor checks the caller's permission, and it is reachable through two distinct paths named in the advisory - identify-only Login V2 sessions and the User Service V2 AddIDPLink endpoint. …

Vulnerability AssessmentAI
| Exploitation | Exploitation requires only that the attacker know the victim's ZITADEL login name; no authentication, primary factor, or caller permission is validated. … Additional conditions and limiting factors are described in the full assessment. |
| Risk Assessment | This is a genuine high-priority vulnerability, not a high-CVSS-but-low-risk artifact. … Full risk analysis with EPSS, KEV, and SSVC signal comparison available after sign-in. |
| Exploit Scenario | Full exploit scenario with step-by-step reproduction available after sign-in. |
| Remediation | Vendor-released patch: ZITADEL 4.17.3, the fixed release covering the 4.0.0-before-4.17.3 range; upgrade 4.x deployments to 4.17.3 or later as the primary remediation. … Detailed patch versions, workarounds, and compensating controls in full report. |
Recommended ActionAI
Within 24 hours, inventory all ZITADEL instances and confirm whether any run versions 3.0.0 through 3.4.15 or 4.0.0 before 4.17.3; restrict network access to ZITADEL management and login endpoints to trusted networks or VPN, enable detailed logging and alerting for IdP linking events, and review recent logs for unexpected AddIDPLink or identify-only Login V2 activity. …
