| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated account with editor privileges (CVSS PR:L) on the wcms instance; exploitation specifically abuses the unvalidated [*:path] parameter of POST /api/v0/media/upload/ to upload executable .php files and uses encoded ../ traversal sequences to escape the intended media directory into a web-served location, with the corresponding DELETE /api/v0/media/[*:path] endpoint enabling arbitrary file deletion. The primary limiting factor is the need for valid editor authentication - anonymous/unauthenticated exploitation is not possible - and successful RCE further depends on the PHP files being written to a directory that the web server will execute; affected versions are wcms through 3.18.0. |
| Impact | The CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H) reflects a network-reachable, low-complexity flaw requiring only low privileges (PR:L) - i.e. a valid editor account - and no user interaction, yielding full confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact on the vulnerable system via arbitrary PHP file write and execution. No EPSS score was provided in the input, the CVE is not listed in CISA KEV, and no public proof-of-concept is referenced, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. The real-world risk is therefore moderated by two factors: exploitation is gated behind authenticated editor access (not anonymous), and the affected product (wcms, an independent flat-file CMS) has a very small deployment footprint. The technical impact is severe and the attack is straightforward once an editor account is obtained, but the combination of required authentication and niche product prevalence makes this a targeted/opportunistic concern rather than a mass-exploitation priority. Note: KEV, EPSS, and POC signals are all absent from the input, so exploitation-likelihood cannot be quantitatively confirmed and this assessment rests on the CVSS vector and VulnCheck advisory alone. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker who holds or phishes a low-privileged editor account authenticates to the wcms instance and sends a POST to /api/v0/media/upload/ with a .php payload and encoded ../ sequences in the path, writing a web shell outside the media directory into a web-served location. The attacker then requests the uploaded .php file, causing the web server to execute it and granting remote code execution as the web server user. No public proof-of-concept is referenced in the provided data. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 04, 2026
Authenticated users holding editor privileges on wcms through 3.18.0 can turn the media upload API into a remote code execution primitive: the [*:path] parameter of POST /api/v0/media/upload/ is not validated, so an editor can write .php files into a web-served location (including outside the media directory via encoded ../ sequences) and have the web server execute them. The same unvalidated path on DELETE /api/v0/media/[*:path] additionally allows arbitrary file deletion, and the underlying flaw is an unrestricted upload of a dangerous file type (CWE-434) rated CVSS 4.0 8.7 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H). Exploitation is not anonymous - a valid editor account is mandatory (PR:L) and code execution further depends on the written PHP landing in a directory the web server executes; at time of analysis there is no CISA KEV entry and no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis - the provided references point to the upstream issue (https://github.com/vincent-peugnet/wcms/issues/662) and to the vulnerable source lines rather than to a fixed release, so administrators should track issue 662 and the repository (https://github.com/vincent-peugnet/wcms) for a patched version and upgrade as soon as one is published. Until then, apply layered compensating controls. First, treat the editor role as a privileged trust boundary: audit and reduce accounts with editor privileges, since the entire flaw requires only PR:L and no user interaction, and disable or deactivate dormant editor accounts. Second, block or restrict the media API at the reverse proxy - deny POST /api/v0/media/upload/* and DELETE /api/v0/media/* from untrusted networks or from all but trusted administrative source IPs - accepting that this breaks legitimate media upload/delete workflows for editors. Third, neutralize the execution step independently of the patch by preventing the web server from executing PHP inside the media and upload directories (for example, a location/directory block that turns the PHP handler off or denies *.php there); the trade-off is a configuration change that can interfere with unrelated applications sharing the same vhost and does not stop the arbitrary file write or deletion primitives. Fourth, if feasible, move or symlink the media storage directory outside the document root so that even traversal-escaped writes are not web-served; this requires template/asset path adjustments and can break existing media links. Fifth, add detection by alerting on new .php files appearing under media or upload paths and on API requests whose [*:path] segment contains encoded traversal sequences, and as an interim code-level fix enforce a strict extension allowlist and canonicalize/reject any path containing .. before the write and delete operations.

Technical ContextAI · show details
wcms is a PHP-based, flat-file content management system maintained by vincent-peugnet, and this flaw lives in its media handling layer. The vulnerable code path is the media controller at app/class/Controllerapimedia.php (lines 24-44) together with the path handling in app/class/Media.php (line 98): the API route pattern /api/v0/media/upload/[*:path] accepts an attacker-controlled path segment and passes it toward filesystem write operations without normalizing, decoding, or restricting it. Because the destination path and filename are attacker-influenced, two conditions collapse simultaneously - the file extension can be set to .php, and the target directory can be escaped using encoded ../ traversal sequences to reach any writable location, including paths the web server serves and executes as PHP. This is the classic CWE-434 (Unrestricted Upload of File with Dangerous Type) pattern, where the missing control is an extension/type allowlist combined with path canonicalization. The mirrored DELETE endpoint on the same [*:path] pattern reuses the identical unvalidated path, giving a symmetric arbitrary-file-deletion primitive. The affected CPE cpe:2.3:a:vincent-peugnet:wcms:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* indicates the wildcard covers all releases up to and including 3.18.0, and the referenced source snapshots (commit cda5bcdb95dbdb1e804fdfe0e5fd2e2b2f8a90e2) anchor the exact vulnerable lines. As with any upload-to-execution chain, the practical impact is bounded by web server configuration: if PHP execution is disabled in the upload/media directory or the media tree sits outside the document root, the write primitive degrades to arbitrary file write/deletion rather than code execution.

DescriptionCVE.org
W (vincent-peugnet/wcms) through 3.18.0 contains a remote code execution vulnerability that allows authenticated editors to write arbitrary files by abusing the unvalidated path in POST /api/v0/media/upload/[*:path]. Attackers can upload .php files executed by the web server, use encoded ../ sequences to write outside the media directory, and delete arbitrary files via DELETE /api/v0/media/[*:path].

Executive ViewAI
wcms through 3.18.0 contains a high-severity vulnerability that allows authenticated editors to achieve remote code execution and arbitrary file deletion via unvalidated file upload paths. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, but the potential for full system compromise and data loss is significant. No vendor-released patch identified at time of analysis, so immediate compensating controls are essential.
Restrict editor privileges to trusted users, enforce MFA, disable PHP execution in upload directories, implement WAF rules to block path traversal, monitor file uploads for suspicious .php files, and consider disabling the media upload API if not essential.
