MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Execution, Privilege Escalation The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the target device to be actively performing a DHCPv6-based network boot (netboot), and the attacker must be on the same local network link to send crafted DHCPv6 ADVERTISE or REPLY packets with oversized SERVERID/CLIENTID (DUID) option lengths. No authentication or user interaction is needed (PR:N/UI:N), but exploitation is limited to the brief netboot window and to adjacent-network position (AV:A) - devices that boot from local storage and never invoke DHCPv6 netboot are not exposed. Affected U-Boot versions are those before 2026.10-rc5. |
| Impact | Signals point to a moderate, availability-focused risk rather than a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:A/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:L/VA:H, 7.1) describes an adjacent-network, low-complexity, unauthenticated flaw whose dominant impact is availability (VA:H = bootloader crash) with only limited integrity impact (VI:L) and no confidentiality loss - consistent with the CWE-787 out-of-bounds write and the description's 'corrupt memory and crash the bootloader.' Two facts sharply narrow real-world risk: exploitation only occurs while a device is performing DHCPv6 netboot, and the attacker must be on the same local link (AV:A, not AV:N). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit are present in the input, so the exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. The vulnerability is real and vendor-confirmed with a patch, but the combination of adjacent-only access, a transient netboot trigger window, and crash-not-code-execution impact makes this a manage-and-patch item rather than an urgent, mass-exploitable threat. No signals conflict; the CVSS adjacent/DoS framing matches the description well. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker with a foothold on the same LAN segment as a device that netboots over DHCPv6 (e.g., a PXE-style embedded appliance or network gear) races or spoofs the DHCPv6 server to send a crafted ADVERTISE or REPLY packet with an oversized SERVERID/CLIENTID (DUID) option length. U-Boot's dhcp6_parse_options() copies/compares using the attacker-controlled length without bounds checking, writing out of bounds and crashing the bootloader (denial of service / boot disruption). No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and access is limited to the adjacent network. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 29, 2026
Memory corruption in U-Boot's DHCPv6 netboot path allows an attacker on the same local network to crash or corrupt the bootloader by sending crafted DHCPv6 ADVERTISE or REPLY packets with oversized DUID (SERVERID/CLIENTID) option lengths. All U-Boot builds prior to 2026.10-rc5 that perform DHCPv6-based network boot are affected; the assessed impact is availability-focused (CVSS:3.1 AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/C:N/I:L/A:H), with confidentiality unaffected and integrity impact limited. Exploitation requires adjacency to the booting device and only works during the brief netboot window, so devices that boot from local storage are not exposed; no public exploit and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: upgrade to U-Boot 2026.10-rc5 or later, which contains the DUID length validation and the DHCP6_DUID_MAX_LEN (130) bound; the specific upstream change is commit 20209a62bc8565fc1e040882bc03c71ff0d73076 (https://github.com/u-boot/u-boot/commit/20209a62bc8565fc1e040882bc03c71ff0d73076), which can also be backported into maintained older release branches that a vendor ships as a board BSP. Because the out-of-bounds write only triggers during an active DHCPv6 netboot exchange on an adjacent network segment, practical compensating controls are: disable DHCPv6 netboot (remove the 'dhcp6'/'ip6' boot targets from the boot command list, or boot from local storage) - trade-off is loss of network boot capability on diskless devices; fall back to DHCPv4/TFTP or statically provision the boot image - trade-off is reduced IPv6-only network support; and segment the provisioning VLAN so that untrusted hosts cannot reach devices during their boot window, or apply switch-port ACLs that permit DHCPv6 only from the legitimate DHCPv6 server - trade-off is operational overhead and possible breakage of legitimate relay/server topologies. Sealing the provisioning L2 domain is the strongest mitigation when firmware updates cannot be applied immediately, since the attack requires sending spoofed ADVERTISE/REPLY traffic to the booting client.

Technical ContextAI · show details
U-Boot is the widely deployed open-source bootloader used in embedded, appliance, and server platforms, and it implements DHCPv6 client support (net/dhcpv6.c) so that boards with no local boot medium can fetch their boot image over IPv6. RFC 8415 defines a DHCPv6 DUID as a 2-octet type field followed by at most 128 octets of identifier data, i.e. a hard maximum of 130 bytes. The vulnerable dhcp6_parse_options() routine parsed incoming ADVERTISE/REPLY option payloads without validating declared option lengths against that limit or against the size of internal buffers such as sm_params.duid: the CLIENTID comparison performed a memcmp() against a fixed-size local DUID using an attacker-controlled length, and the SERVERID path accepted arbitrarily long option data without a bounds check. This is CWE-787 (out-of-bounds write) per the supplied classification, with a related out-of-bounds read in the DUID comparison, so malformed option lengths can overwrite adjacent memory and destabilize the bootloader. The upstream fix introduces DHCP6_DUID_MAX_LEN (130) in net/dhcpv6.h and rewrites the CLIENTID check to require option_len == sizeof(sm_params.duid) before comparing, plus a length check that bails out with 'SERVER ID too long' when the SERVERID option exceeds the DUID maximum. The flaw lives in the network parsing layer reached only during an active DHCPv6 netboot exchange.

DescriptionCVE.org
U-Boot before 2026.10-rc5 contains out-of-bounds memory access in dhcp6_parse_options() that fails to validate SERVERID and CLIENTID option lengths from DHCPv6 packets. Attackers on the local network can send crafted DHCPv6 ADVERTISE or REPLY packets during netboot to corrupt memory and crash the bootloader.
Executive ViewAI
U-Boot-based devices that use DHCPv6 netboot are exposed to a locally adjacent, unauthenticated memory-corruption issue that can crash or corrupt the bootloader during the brief netboot window, disrupting provisioning and recovery workflows. Leadership should care because affected fleets-especially edge, IoT, or data-center devices relying on network boot-may fail to boot or require manual intervention, while devices booting from local storage are not exposed. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and a vendor patch is available, so the primary risk is operational availability during the remediation window.
Apply vendor patch.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Memory corruption occurs when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of allocated memory regions or accesses memory in unintended ways, violating the integrity of the process's address space.
