| Exploitation Conditions | Requires local access as a user who can either prepend a directory to the PATH used by the fuse-archive process or write a malicious binary into an existing writable, attacker-controlled directory that already appears in that PATH. Exploitation further requires that fuse-archive be run WITHOUT the '-o noexternal' option so external decompression filters are invoked, and that a victim actually mount an archive whose format triggers an external helper (e.g. base64/gpg). Limiting factors: local-only vector, required victim interaction (mounting), the non-default precondition of a writable PATH entry earlier than the legitimate binaries, and that versions 1.22-1.23 are partially mitigated with full remediation only in 1.24. |
| Impact | This is a local privilege-context code-execution flaw (CWE-426, untrusted search path) in Google fuse-archive, not a remotely exploitable network vulnerability. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:A) scores 5.4 (medium) and is internally consistent: local attack vector, an attack requirement (AT:P - a writable/attacker-controllable PATH entry must exist), low privileges, and required user/victim interaction (a victim must actually mount an archive that triggers an external decompression filter such as base64 or gpg). No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no standalone public exploit were provided - there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis (the PATH-sanitization test added in the fix commit demonstrates the issue but is a regression test, not weaponized exploit code). The high VC/VI/VA:H impact reflects full arbitrary code execution in the target user's context, which legitimately drives severity up, but the local vector plus required user interaction and the non-default precondition of a writable PATH directory keep real-world risk moderate and opportunistic rather than mass-exploitable. Net: a genuine but conditional local code-execution issue - real for multi-user or shared-host scenarios, low urgency for typical single-user desktop installs. The 'RCE' tag is technically local code execution triggered by local search-path hijacking, not network RCE; treat it as such when prioritizing. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | On a multi-user or shared host, a low-privileged attacker plants a malicious executable named after an external decompression helper (e.g. 'base64' or 'gpg') in a directory that is writable and appears earlier in PATH, or influences the PATH of a higher-privileged victim. When that victim mounts an archive with fuse-archive that invokes the external filter, the attacker's binary runs with the victim's privileges. No public exploit is identified, though the fix commit's test.py illustrates the execution pathway. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 28, 2026
Local code execution in Google fuse-archive versions prior to 1.24 lets an attacker hijack the external decompression helpers that libarchive launches when an archive is mounted, by prepending a directory to the process PATH or by planting a malicious binary in an attacker-writable directory that already appears on PATH. The flaw is an untrusted search path issue (CWE-426) rated 5.4 under CVSS 4.0 (AV:L/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:A/VC:H/VI:H/VA:H); exploitation requires local access as an authenticated user (PR:L), that fuse-archive run without the '-o noexternal' option, and that a victim mount an archive whose format triggers an external filter such as base64 or gpg. No public exploit code or CISA KEV entry was identified at time of analysis; version 1.22 delivered only a partial mitigation and version 1.24 fully resolves the issue by restricting external helper lookups to a sanitized, fixed PATH.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to fuse-archive 1.24 or later, which is the vendor-released patch (announced as 'Patch: Available from vendor' and implemented in the two referenced upstream commits) and which forces external decompression helpers to be resolved only from a fixed, sanitized PATH of /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin on Linux or those paths plus /opt/homebrew/bin and /opt/local/bin on macOS. On 1.22 or 1.23, treat the mitigation as partial only and plan the full upgrade. As an immediate compensating control on any older build, mount archives with '-o noexternal', which clears PATH entirely so that libarchive only uses natively compiled or statically linked filters; the trade-off is that archives requiring external helpers such as gpg or base64 will fail to mount and produce mounting errors (internal libarchive error 30 in the upstream test). If external helpers are genuinely needed before upgrading, launch fuse-archive with an explicitly sanitized, non-writable PATH (for example 'env PATH=/usr/bin:/bin fuse-archive ...') and audit the invoking user's environment and all PATH directories for world-writable or user-writable locations, since an attacker able to prepend a directory to PATH or write a helper binary there regains code execution under the fuse-archive user's security context. Also ensure the PATH is not attacker-influenced in wrapper scripts, cron entries, or service units that launch fuse-archive, and restrict local accounts able to mount archives on shared or multi-user hosts until the upgrade is complete.

Technical ContextAI · show details
fuse-archive is a Google FUSE filesystem that lets users browse and read archive contents without extracting them, delegating format handling to libarchive. libarchive can invoke external filter programs (for example gpg for encrypted archives or base64 for encoded streams) and resolves those binaries through the PATH environment variable inherited from the invoking user. Because that PATH was passed through unsanitized, an attacker who controls an early PATH entry - either by prepending a directory to the environment of the fuse-archive process or by writing into a writable directory already present in PATH - can substitute a malicious helper that is then executed under the security context of the user running fuse-archive. This is the classic CWE-426 untrusted search path pattern. The upstream fix (commits 4b13a49b4bf66e0960241bab78987dde268a8b81 and 6f086e6381428d5b818dcb1bf7b9204e6bf017f0) replaces the caller-supplied PATH with a fixed safe default of /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin (plus /opt/homebrew/bin and /opt/local/bin on macOS) whenever external filters are permitted, and still clears PATH entirely when '-o noexternal' is used; a new regression test, TestPathSanitization, plants a fake 'base64' helper in a temporary directory and asserts it is never executed. An independent assessment maps this to CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, emphasizing the local-only vector, the required victim interaction of mounting an archive, and the non-default precondition of a writable PATH entry ordered ahead of legitimate binaries.

DescriptionCVE.org
In Google fuse-archive versions prior to 1.24, an attacker who can prepend a directory to PATH or write a malicious binary to an attacker-controlled or writable directory appearing in PATH can hijack the execution pathway. This allows the attacker to execute arbitrary local code under the security context of the user running the fuse-archive process. The issue was partially mitigated in version 1.22 and fully resolved in 1.24 via refined selective PATH filtering.
