Exploitation Conditions

Requires (1) the attacker to control content rendered in a SiYuan remote-kernel renderer, (2) the victim to run an affected SiYuan version before v3.8.4, and (3) a user-mediated paste operation, during which the IPC commands clipboardReadMathML/clipboardReadOffice/clipboardReadWPS are invoked with matching plaintext to return native clipboard formats. Limiting factors: exploitation is local to the victim's desktop (clipboard access), depends on the victim actually performing a paste into attacker-influenced renderer content, and yields only clipboard data present at that moment - no persistence, code execution, or write access. Attacker value is bounded by whatever sensitive MathML/Office/WPS content the victim happens to have copied.

Impact

The vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 8.6 (HIGH) substantially overstates real-world risk for what is fundamentally a clipboard information-disclosure flaw (CWE-200). The vendor vector rates VC:H/VI:H/VA:H - but reading MathML/Office/WPS bytes from the local clipboard is a confidentiality issue only; there is no integrity or availability impact, so VI:H/VA:H are unjustified. The vector also sets AV:L (local), which is correct - the affected data (the OS clipboard) is local to the victim's desktop - yet pairs it with UI:N despite the description explicitly stating exploitation occurs 'during user-mediated paste operations,' meaning user interaction IS required (UI should be Passive/Required). Netting these out, this is a moderate-severity, confidentiality-only, user-interaction-gated leak, not a HIGH-priority issue. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code accompany this CVE, so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no signal of active or automatable exploitation. A patch is confirmed available (v3.8.4). Net: treat as a low-to-medium remediation priority - real but narrow, requiring the attacker to already control renderer content the victim views and a manual paste to occur.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who controls content rendered inside a SiYuan remote-kernel renderer (e.g., malicious remote/served document content) crafts a page that invokes the siyuan-get IPC commands clipboardReadMathML, clipboardReadOffice, and clipboardReadWPS with matching plaintext. When the victim performs a paste into that renderer context, the handler returns native clipboard formats (MathML formulas, Office and WPS binary bytes), which the attacker-controlled content exfiltrates. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026

SiYuan note-taking versions before v3.8.4 leak native clipboard data to attacker-influenced content rendered by a remote-kernel renderer because the siyuan-get IPC handler omits an authorization check on the clipboardReadMathML, clipboardReadOffice, and clipboardReadWPS commands. When a victim performs a user-mediated paste into that renderer content, those commands are invoked with matching plaintext and return native clipboard formats, disclosing whatever MathML formulas, Office bytes, or WPS bytes happened to be on the local clipboard at that instant. There is no public exploit identified at time of analysis, exploitation is local and interaction-dependent, and the exposure is limited to clipboard contents present at the moment of the paste - so the vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 8.6 (HIGH), our independent assessment treats this as a bounded information-disclosure issue rather than a high-severity compromise.

RemediationAI

Upgrade SiYuan to v3.8.4 or later, which is the vendor-released patch for this IPC authorization omission; the vendor advisory is at https://github.com/siyuan-note/siyuan/security/advisories/GHSA-mjmm-hgmc-m7qf and a third-party write-up is at https://www.vulncheck.com/advisories/siyuan-before-3.8.4-clipboard-data-disclosure-via-ipc. Until the upgrade can be applied, do not use remote-kernel mode in environments where renderers may serve untrusted or third-party content, and do not paste into note content rendered from an untrusted source - the trade-off is loss of remote-kernel convenience for those workflows. Where remote-kernel functionality is required, restrict kernel access to trusted hosts/users (network ACLs, token/authentication on the kernel endpoint) so that unvetted renderers cannot drive the siyuan-get handler, accepting the added operational overhead. Avoid leaving sensitive MathML, Office, or WPS material on the system clipboard while an affected SiYuan build is open, since clearing the clipboard removes the data an attacker could obtain, though it does not fix the underlying missing authorization check. Local-only kernel usage with no untrusted renderer content lowers but does not eliminate exposure, because the handler remains reachable from any renderer context in affected builds.

Technical ContextAI · show details

SiYuan is an Electron-based personal knowledge management application whose architecture separates a front-end renderer from a "kernel" backend that can run locally or remotely (remote-kernel mode exposes the kernel to browser/renderer clients). Communication between renderer and kernel occurs over IPC, including a siyuan-get handler that brokers data requests. CVE-2026-100640 is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor): the handler fails to verify that the calling renderer is authorized to request native clipboard formats before dispatching clipboardReadMathML, clipboardReadOffice, and clipboardReadWPS. Because the command names and plaintext parameters are guessable/predictable, a renderer that merely hosts remote content can drive these calls and have the kernel return the local clipboard payload in MathML, raw Office, and WPS representations. The affected component is tracked by CPE cpe:2.3:a:siyuan-note:siyuan:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all versions up to but excluding v3.8.4), with the vendor advisory GHSA-mjmm-hgmc-m7qf and a VulnCheck advisory documenting the flaw; the ENISA EUVD entry EUVD-2026-87734 corroborates the 0 to <3.8.4 range.

DescriptionCVE.org

SiYuan before v3.8.4 contains an authorization omission in the siyuan-get IPC handler that allows remote-kernel renderers to access native clipboard formats by invoking clipboardReadMathML, clipboardReadOffice, and clipboardReadWPS commands with matching plaintext. Attackers controlling remote renderer content can obtain MathML formulas, Office bytes, and WPS bytes from local clipboard during user-mediated paste operations.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

SiYuan note-taking desktop clients running versions earlier than v3.8.4 can disclose whatever the user happens to have on their local clipboard - MathML formulas, Office documents, or WPS data - to content rendered by a remote-kernel renderer at the moment the user pastes into it. The exposure is local, requires a deliberate user paste, and is limited to the clipboard contents present at that instant, so leadership should treat this as a bounded information-disclosure risk affecting users who work with untrusted or third-party rendered content rather than as a system compromise. Because clipboard data frequently contains credentials, contract text, and regulated data, the practical impact concentrates on confidentiality for that user population.
