MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Impact The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Primary vector needs no special conditions: a remote unauthenticated caller can drain the single shared default quota bucket used for all direct anonymous HTTP API requests against a default ClawHub deployment, degrading availability for unrelated anonymous visitors. The secondary identity-selection/rate-limit-evasion vector is gated on the non-default TRUST_FORWARDED_IPS option being enabled while NO authenticated edge/proxy sits in front, allowing forged forwarded-IP headers (e.g. X-Forwarded-For, CF-Connecting-IP) to choose quota identities. Limiting factors: impact is confined to availability/service degradation (no data read or write), the header-spoofing path requires that specific misconfiguration, and the affected component is the ClawHub backend only - the npm CLI and OpenClaw runtime are explicitly not affected. |
| Impact | All signals point to a low-to-moderate, availability-only issue rather than a top-tier priority. The vendor CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:N/VI:N/VA:L/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N, 6.9 Medium) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low-complexity, no privileges or user interaction, and impact confined to a low availability hit (VA:L) with zero confidentiality or integrity impact - matching a quota-exhaustion/rate-limit-bypass (CWE-770) that degrades service rather than exposing or altering data. The 6.9 figure is somewhat generous for a shared-quota drain that only 'denies or degrades' API access; my independent scoring lands around 5.3 (A:L only). There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, so this is not confirmed as actively exploited - the practical risk is opportunistic nuisance-level DoS against a niche service, not widespread automated exploitation. Note a nuance the raw score obscures: the primary vector (draining the single shared anonymous quota) works against default configurations and requires no auth, while the second vector (forged X-Forwarded-For/CF-Connecting-IP headers to pick quota identities and evade limits) is gated on the non-default TRUST_FORWARDED_IPS option being enabled without an authenticating edge/proxy. Defenders should treat this as a hardening/availability fix, not an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A remote, unauthenticated attacker sends a burst of direct anonymous requests to ClawHub's HTTP API; because every anonymous caller shares one default quota bucket, the attacker exhausts that allowance and legitimate anonymous visitors are throttled or blocked. Where TRUST_FORWARDED_IPS is enabled without a trusted proxy, the attacker instead forges forwarded-IP headers to rotate quota identities and evade rate limiting entirely. No public exploit code is known, but the attack requires only ordinary HTTP requests (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N). |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026
Quota exhaustion in the ClawHub backend (openclaw/clawhub) lets a remote, unauthenticated caller drain the single shared default allowance that all direct anonymous HTTP API requests draw from, degrading or denying API access for unrelated anonymous visitors. Because anonymous requests are never bound to a trusted caller identity, there is no per-caller isolation to absorb the abuse; a secondary path exists when the non-default TRUST_FORWARDED_IPS option is enabled without an authenticated edge or proxy in front of the service, allowing forged forwarded-IP headers (such as X-Forwarded-For or CF-Connecting-IP) to select arbitrary quota identities and evade rate limiting. The issue is availability-only (no data read or write), was confirmed at revision cbfee7343ddc867316dd9b3de6fa8856730f9f41 with the complete historical affected range left undetermined, and is fixed in revision 8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650 (PR #3684); assessed CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L, no public exploit identified at time of analysis, and the npm CLI and OpenClaw runtime are separate products that are not affected.

Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - the vendor fix is commit 8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650 (PR #3684), referenced from advisory GHSA-4c7q-g7xf-5628, and affected deployments should upgrade to that revision or later (or to whatever tagged release the vendor publishes for it) since the exact historical affected range was never fully established. The fix redirects direct anonymous calls to the public API origin so they no longer consume shared quota, and returns HTTP 401 for forged identity assertions. If immediate upgrade is not possible, mitigate by disabling TRUST_FORWARDED_IPS unless the service sits behind an authenticated edge or reverse proxy that strips inbound client-supplied X-Forwarded-For and CF-Connecting-IP headers and sets them itself - the trade-off is that legitimate forwarded addressing and any per-IP telemetry will be lost while the option is off, and leaving it on without that trusted ingress preserves the spoofing and rate-limit-evasion vector. Additional compensating controls include placing a fronting proxy or CDN layer with its own per-connection rate limits in front of the ClawHub API origin so quota exhaustion cannot be driven purely by the application's shared anonymous bucket, and monitoring for a single client burst pattern consuming the anonymous allowance; note that any edge throttling may also affect legitimate high-volume API consumers and should be tuned alongside the vendor fix rather than instead of it. Direct anonymous API access may be restricted at the network layer as a last resort, at the cost of breaking intended public API usage.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The issue is a CWE-770 (Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling) flaw in the ClawHub backend application, which is built on the Convex serverless runtime and uses the @convex-dev/rate-limiter component. ClawHub's HTTP API layer derives a rate-limit identity for each request via helpers such as getDownloadIdentity/getDownloadIdentityValue and a getVerifiedClientIp utility; when no authenticated user context exists, anonymous requests fall through to a default bucket rather than to a caller-unique key, so every direct anonymous call competes for one shared quota. The patch diff shows the fix centralizes trust validation in lib/verifiedClientIp and makes unverified forwarded addresses resolve to a null identity instead of becoming a quota key - tests were rewritten from 'prefers user identity and falls back to IP identity' to 'prefers user identity and rejects unverified IP identity', and from 'uses cf-connecting-ip for anonymous identity when trusted headers are enabled' to 'rejects unverified cf-connecting-ip for anonymous metrics'. The second weakness is an identity-spoofing/rate-limit-evasion path: when TRUST_FORWARDED_IPS is enabled but no authenticated edge or reverse proxy sanitizes and overwrites client-supplied headers, an attacker can forge X-Forwarded-For or CF-Connecting-IP values to mint arbitrary quota identities. The affected CPE is cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:clawhub:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, covering the ClawHub application/backend only; the diff also shows redirect of direct anonymous calls to the public API origin without consuming quota and HTTP 401 responses for forged identity assertions.

DescriptionCVE.org
ClawHub (the openclaw/clawhub application/backend) does not bind anonymous HTTP API requests to a trusted caller identity, so all direct anonymous API requests share a single default quota allowance. A remote, unauthenticated caller can drain that shared allowance and thereby deny or degrade API access for unrelated visitors. In addition, when the TRUST_FORWARDED_IPS option is enabled without an authenticated edge/proxy, clients can supply arbitrary forwarded IP headers to select quota identities of their choosing and evade rate limiting. The issue was confirmed at revision cbfee7343ddc867316dd9b3de6fa8856730f9f41; the complete historical affected range was not established. It is fixed in revision 8c2de6c506bb4efabe3f0c2ffb8370b9e23d4650 (PR #3684), where direct anonymous calls are redirected to the public API origin without consuming quota and forged identity assertions return HTTP 401. The npm CLI and OpenClaw runtime are separate products and are not affected.
