Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires all of the following: (1) the target fetch path must be one that uses the trusted-host DNS recheck code path; (2) the destination hostname must already be on OpenClaw's trusted-host allowlist; (3) the attacker must be able to make that allowed hostname resolve to an unspecified address (0.0.0.0 or ::), i.e., control or influence DNS for it; and (4) a service must actually be bound to loopback whose response is worth disclosing. Impact is confidentiality-only (data returned by the reachable internal service). Limiting factors: this is not exploitable against default configurations without DNS influence over an allowlisted host, exploitation is high-complexity (CVSS AC:H/AT:P), it is not automatable at scale, and it affects only OpenClaw deployments before 2026.8.1.

Impact

This is a genuine but conditional vulnerability that sits well below its headline number. The vendor CVSS 4.0 base score of 8.2 (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) reflects network reach, no authentication, and high confidentiality impact, but two dampeners are baked into that very vector: AC:H and AT:P. Both encode the hard precondition that the attacker must be able to influence DNS resolution for an already-trusted/allowed hostname so it returns an unspecified address (0.0.0.0 or ::). That is a meaningful barrier, not a default-reachable condition, so the 8.2 rating reads as generous for a confidentiality-only SSRF whose payoff is entirely dependent on what loopback service happens to be reachable and what it returns. My independent CVSS 3.1 assessment lands at ~5.9 (Medium). On the exploitation-probability side, there is no EPSS score provided, the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit code is referenced - so there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no evidence of active exploitation. SSVC-style reading: exploitation=none observed, automatable=no (requires per-target DNS influence over an allowlisted host, so it is not spray-and-pray), technical impact=partial (information disclosure only, no integrity/availability). Net: real and worth patching for OpenClaw operators, but a targeted/opportunistic issue rather than a mass-exploitation priority. No signals conflict; the main caveat is that vendor CVSS4 severity overstates practical risk relative to the described preconditions.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can influence DNS for a hostname already on OpenClaw's trusted-host allowlist (e.g., via DNS cache poisoning, a controlled/compromised authoritative record, or a rebinding-style setup) makes that name resolve to 0.0.0.0 or ::. Because the trusted-host DNS recheck treats the unspecified address as valid, a guarded fetch is redirected to a service bound only to loopback, returning that internal service's response to the attacker. No public proof-of-concept is referenced; the network attack vector is offset by high complexity and the attack requirement of controlling DNS for an allowed host.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 26, 2026

Server-side request forgery in OpenClaw (npm package 'openclaw') before 2026.8.1 lets an attacker who can influence DNS for an already-allowlisted hostname bypass the trusted-host destination validation and reach a service bound only to loopback, disclosing that service's response. Exploitation is highly conditional and high-complexity: the fetch must go through the trusted-host DNS recheck path, the hostname must already be on the trusted-host allowlist, the attacker must be able to make it resolve to an unspecified address (0.0.0.0 or ::), and a loopback-bound service must actually exist and return useful data - impact is confidentiality-only. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation were identified at time of analysis, and the vendor shipped a fix in 2026.8.1.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to OpenClaw 2026.8.1 or later, which fixes the trusted-host DNS recheck so that unspecified addresses (0.0.0.0 and ::) are rejected as destinations; this is the primary and complete fix and should be prioritized on any deployment using the trusted-host fetch path. Where an immediate upgrade is not possible, apply compensating controls with their trade-offs: prune the trusted-host allowlist to only hosts whose DNS you fully control and trust (reduces exposure but limits legitimate fetch functionality for any removed host); enforce egress network policy that denies outbound connections to loopback and unspecified ranges (127.0.0.0/8, ::1, 0.0.0.0/8) from the OpenClaw process, and consider blocking RFC1918 and link-local ranges (effective at the network layer but can break legitimate internal integrations and requires container/namespace or firewall changes); and, if the recheck path is not needed, disable or bypass guarded fetches that use it (limits features that depend on allowlisted remote fetches). Because the bypass depends on DNS influence over an allowlisted name, hardening or pinning DNS resolution for allowlisted hosts - for example via a controlled resolver or host-file entries - removes the attack precondition without code changes, at the cost of operational rigidity. Technical ContextAI · show details

OpenClaw is a Node.js application distributed as the npm package 'openclaw', and the affected CPE (cpe:2.3:a:openclaw:openclaw:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) covers all builds prior to 2026.8.1. The flaw is a classic CWE-918 (Server-Side Request Forgery) rooted in how the trusted-host DNS recheck validates a destination after resolving an allowlisted hostname. The validation logic treats an unspecified address (0.0.0.0 for IPv4 or :: for IPv6) as acceptable rather than as a loopback-equivalent destination, because the code does not normalize or reject unspecified addresses before the guard. On many platforms, connecting to 0.0.0.0 is routed to the local host (127.0.0.1), so a fetch that should have been blocked reaches loopback-bound services such as internal admin endpoints, metrics or metadata interfaces, and returns their response to the caller. Because the bypass hinges on DNS resolution behavior for a hostname the operator has already trusted, it is not reachable through default configuration alone - the attacker needs DNS influence over a specifically allowlisted name plus a live loopback service. The CVSS v4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N) reflects network reachability, high attack complexity, and confidentiality-only impact, matching the independent CVSS 3.1 assessment (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N).

DescriptionCVE.org

OpenClaw (npm package 'openclaw') before 2026.8.1 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability in its trusted-host DNS checks. For fetches that use the trusted-host DNS recheck, a trusted hostname that resolves to an unspecified address (0.0.0.0 or ::) bypasses the SSRF destination validation. An attacker who can influence DNS for an allowed hostname can therefore cause a guarded fetch to reach a service bound only to loopback and disclose its response; the practical impact depends on the reachable service and the data it returns. Fixed in 2026.8.1.

Executive ViewAI

Why It Matters

A high-severity server-side request forgery flaw in the OpenClaw npm package (versions before 2026.8.1) could allow an attacker with DNS influence over an already-allowlisted hostname to reach loopback-only services and read their responses. Impact is limited to confidentiality and exploitation requires a narrow set of preconditions, but any team running OpenClaw in its software supply chain should treat remediation as a priority given the package's role in handling outbound requests. Leadership should care because the risk sits in third-party code the organization does not directly control, and a fix is already available.

Business Impact: Medium
Compensating Controls

Apply vendor patch (upgrade to openclaw 2026.8.1 or later); where immediate upgrade is not possible, pin trusted-host allowlist entries to fixed IP addresses, block resolution of allowlisted hostnames to 0.0.0.0 or ::, and restrict loopback-bound services to non-sensitive data with authentication enforced.
