Exploitation Conditions

Requires an authenticated Zammad account with API/GraphQL access (any low-privilege user/agent suffices - PR:L) and knowledge or enumeration of the target user's taskbar item identifier. Exploitation targets the taskbar feature, which stores transient session state including auto-saved ticket drafts. The advisory notes the missing authorization check applies 'under certain conditions,' so it may not trigger on every taskbar access path. Limiting factors: authentication is mandatory (no unauthenticated exploitation), impact is confined to one victim's taskbar item per request, and only transient draft/session data is exposed - not the full ticket store or credentials. Affects Zammad versions prior to 7.0.2.

Impact

This is a genuine broken-access-control (IDOR-style) flaw in Zammad's GraphQL API, but a low-severity one. The provided CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:N/VC:L/VI:N/VA:N, base 5.3) is internally consistent with the description: network-reachable, low attack complexity, and requiring an authenticated low-privilege account (PR:L). There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit identified at time of analysis - so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' None of the signals point to widespread or automated exploitation; this is a targeted, low-impact data-exposure issue against a niche self-hosted product rather than a priority mass-exploitation candidate. One notable discrepancy: NVD scores integrity as VI:N (read-only exposure), yet the fix commit adds Pundit authorization not only to reads but to the Delete (destroy?), Update (update?), and TouchLastContact (update?) mutations - implying an attacker could also modify or delete another user's taskbar items (auto-saved ticket drafts), which is an integrity impact the official vector omits. My independent assessment therefore raises integrity to I:L. Overall a real but low-priority bug: authenticated-only, single-victim data at a time, confined to transient taskbar state.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A low-privileged authenticated Zammad user (e.g. any agent) crafts a GraphQL request supplying another user's taskbar item identifier. Because the authorization check on the taskbar item is not enforced, the server returns that user's transient session state - including auto-saved ticket drafts - and, per the fix, the attacker could also update, touch, or delete those items. No public exploit code exists, but the attack is trivial to construct once the target's taskbar ID is known or enumerated.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Broken access control in Zammad's GraphQL API allows an authenticated user to read taskbar item data - transient session state that can include auto-saved ticket drafts - belonging to another user by supplying that user's taskbar identifier. The flaw affects Zammad versions prior to 7.0.2 and was addressed upstream in the 7.0.2 release, which adds the missing authorization checks. Exploitation requires a valid low-privilege account (authenticated) plus knowledge or enumeration of the target taskbar item ID; there is no public exploit code identified at time of analysis, and impact is limited to a single victim's taskbar item per request.

RemediationAI

Upgrade to Zammad 7.0.2 or later, which is the vendor-released patch that enforces Pundit authorization on taskbar item arguments and adds the HasPunditAuthorization concern to TaskbarItemType; see the advisory at https://github.com/zammad/zammad/security/advisories/GHSA-jvcg-5539-vvc3 and the release notes at https://github.com/zammad/zammad/releases/tag/7.0.2 (fix commit: https://github.com/zammad/zammad/commit/4ccd5d573023b66b0d0184914c92417e1780793f). If immediate upgrade is not possible, compensating controls include restricting GraphQL API access to trusted networks or roles and reducing the number of accounts with API/GraphQL access, since exploitation requires an authenticated session - though this does not defend against a legitimately authenticated insider and may break integrations. Administrators can also monitor and purge stale taskbar records and shorten session/draft persistence, accepting that this degrades the draft auto-save experience for legitimate users. Note that no vendor workaround short of the 7.0.2 patch fully closes the missing authorization check.

Technical ContextAI · show details

Zammad is a Ruby on Rails-based open-source helpdesk/customer support platform that exposes a GraphQL API for its UI. The vulnerable component is the 'taskbar' feature, which persists short-lived per-session state - most notably auto-saved ticket drafts - under User::TaskbarItem objects. GraphQL mutation arguments for taskbar item operations (delete, update, and touchLastContact) declared their ID argument with a type loader (loads: Gql::Types::User::TaskbarItemType) but without a Pundit policy method, so the record was fetched by ID without evaluating authorization. The TaskbarItemType GraphQL type also lacked the HasPunditAuthorization concern, allowing field resolution on records outside the caller's ownership. The upstream fix wires loads_pundit_method: :destroy? and :update? into the mutation arguments and includes Gql::Types::Concerns::HasPunditAuthorization in TaskbarItemType, and adds regression specs asserting Exceptions::Forbidden is raised when a user targets another user's or agent's taskbar item. This maps to CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor) via an IDOR-style missing authorization check.

DescriptionCVE.org

Zammad is a web based open source helpdesk/customer support system. Prior to 7.0.2, a broken access control vulnerability exists in Zammad's GraphQL API. An authenticated user can access taskbar item data belonging to another user by crafting a request with the target user's taskbar identifier. The taskbar feature stores transient state for active user sessions, including auto-saved ticket drafts. Under certain conditions, the authorization check for taskbar item access is not enforced, allowing a user to read another user's taskbar item data. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.0.2.
