MITRE ATT&CK
2 techniques across 2 tactics: Collection, Discovery The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires an authenticated user holding the knowledge_base.editor permission in at least one KB category, AND a deployment where multiple knowledge base categories exist with DIFFERENT editor roles assigned (granular per-category permissions). Exploitation is via the global quick search feature. Limiting factors: the leak is confined to answer titles and updated_at timestamps - category names are not exposed and opening an answer returns 'Page not found,' so no body content is accessible; single-category or uniform-permission KB setups are not affected. Fixed in Zammad 7.0.2 by removing the editor-role search bypass. |
| Impact | This is a low-priority, high-context issue rather than a genuine threat. The vendor CVSS 4.0 score of 2.1 (AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:H/UI:N/VC:L) already signals minimal impact: confidentiality-only (VC:L), no integrity or availability effect, and the AT:P attack requirement reflects a non-default precondition (multiple KB categories with distinct editor roles). PR:H per the vendor implies elevated privilege, though in practice exploitation needs the knowledge_base.editor role, which is a granted moderate privilege rather than a full admin - I assess PR:L as more accurate. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC is present in the input; per precision rules this is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis.' The disclosed data is strictly limited - answer titles and updated_at timestamps from categories the user cannot edit, with category names withheld and answer bodies returning 'Page not found.' No signals conflict here; all sources (vendor advisory, commit evidence, low CVSS) consistently point to a minor granular-permission leak. Real-world priority is low: fix on normal patch cadence. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | In a Zammad instance where the knowledge base has multiple categories with different editor roles assigned, a user granted knowledge_base.editor in only Category A uses the global quick search and receives matching answer titles and last-updated timestamps from Category B, which they have no editor access to. No public exploit code is identified; the leak is passive and surfaces only fragmentary metadata (titles/timestamps), not full article content. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Information disclosure in the Zammad helpdesk knowledge base lets an authenticated user who holds the knowledge_base.editor permission in at least one category see answer titles and updated_at timestamps belonging to categories where they have no editor rights, exposed through the global quick search. The leak only occurs in deployments that use granular, per-category permission assignments with differing editor roles; category names are not exposed and opening a leaked answer returns 'Page not found,' so no answer body content is accessible. Exploitation requires a valid authenticated account with the editor permission (PR:L/H depending on the scoring system) and is rated low severity (CVSS 4.0 base 2.1), with no public exploit identified at time of analysis.
RemediationAI
Upgrade to Zammad 7.0.2, which is the vendor-released patch that removes the editor-role early returns in the knowledge base answer translation search, so quick search results are filtered by category-scoped permissions (advisory: https://github.com/zammad/zammad/security/advisories/GHSA-4m54-p3mr-22g2). If immediate upgrade is not possible, the only practical compensating control is to eliminate the configuration that enables the leak: grant knowledge_base.editor uniformly across all knowledge base categories (or restrict the permission to a single category so no differential editor roles coexist), which closes the disclosure path but sacrifices the granular per-category editor model; alternatively, audit and reduce the population of users holding knowledge_base.editor, and rely on the fact that only titles and updated_at values are exposed, not answer bodies. Be aware that disabling the global quick search, if implemented as a workaround, degrades general search usability for all agents and is therefore a trade-off rather than a clean mitigation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw is CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor) rooted in the knowledge base answer translation search logic in app/models/knowledge_base/answer/translation/search.rb. The search query extension and its permission filter both returned early whenever params[:current_user] held the blanket knowledge_base.editor permission, so per-category editor grants were never evaluated during search. As a result the SQL fallback path and the ElasticSearch indexing path both returned answers from categories the user could not legitimately edit, limited to translation titles and updated_at metadata. The upstream fix removes those global editor short-circuits and instead relies on the category-scoped permission resolver; a regression spec was added that builds two categories with different editor roles and asserts only the permitted category's answer is returned via both ElasticSearch and SQL search. Affected code is tracked by CPE cpe:2.3:a:zammad:zammad:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:* (all Zammad releases prior to 7.0.2).

Lifecycle Timeline
1DescriptionCVE.org
Zammad is a web based open source helpdesk/customer support system. Prior to 7.0.2, when multiple KB categories have different editor roles assigned, a user with knowledge_base.editor in one category can see answer titles and updated_at timestamps from categories they do not have editor access to , via the global quick search. Category names are not leaked, and opening the answer returns "Page not found," but the title alone may disclose sensitive information. This vulnerability is fixed in 7.0.2.
