Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires an NVMe deployment that uses multipath against a SHARED namespace with FDP (Flexible Data Placement) in use, so that nvme_query_fdp_info() runs per-path and two paths concurrently scan the same namespace to populate head->nr_plids/head->plids. Limiting factors: attacker needs LOCAL access (AV:L) and the privileges/ability to induce namespace path scanning (PR:L, e.g., device reconnect/discovery), the affected hardware+config must support FDP with multiple paths to the same namespace, and success depends on winning a narrow concurrency window (a timing race), which constrains reliability despite the AC:L label. Not reachable remotely and not applicable to single-path or non-FDP NVMe configurations.

Impact

This is a low-to-moderate priority local availability bug, not an urgent patch-now item. The NVD CVSS 3.1 vector (AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H, base 5.5) scopes impact to availability only - a race on the shared head->nr_plids/head->plids pair that can corrupt the FDP placement-id state and crash or destabilize the kernel, with no confidentiality or integrity impact. All exploitation signals point the same low direction: EPSS is 0.14% (3rd percentile), the CVE is NOT in CISA KEV, and no public exploit was provided - i.e., no public exploit identified at time of analysis. One notable conflict: the input Tags include 'Information Disclosure,' but the CVSS vector sets C:N, so there is no confidentiality impact per the vector - the tag appears mislabeled (CWE-362 and A:H both indicate a race-driven availability/corruption fault, not data disclosure). I also note the vector lists AC:L, yet the root cause is a concurrency race between two multipath scanners, which typically implies a timing-dependent (higher-complexity) trigger; verify whether AC:L is justified. Net: a legitimate kernel hardening fix, but realistic risk is low because it requires local access to a specific hardware/configuration combination rather than remote reach.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

A local user or process on a system using NVMe multipath against a shared namespace triggers concurrent path scanning (e.g., device discovery/reconnect) so two paths race to populate the same namespace head's FDP placement-id array. The unsynchronized write/read of nr_plids/plids corrupts that state, destabilizing the kernel and producing a denial of service. No public exploit is identified at time of analysis, and the low-complexity label is in tension with the inherent timing dependence of winning the race.

AnalysisAIv1 – Oct 21, 2026

Local users on Linux systems running NVMe multipath against a shared namespace with Flexible Data Placement (FDP) enabled can trigger a race in the kernel's per-namespace FDP placement-ID array initialization, causing inconsistent state and potential availability loss such as a crash or hang. The assessed vector (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H) makes this a low-to-moderate priority local availability bug rather than an urgent patch-now item, and it requires a specific FDP-plus-multipath hardware and configuration. A vendor patch is available via stable commits e0a23e3c8c4c3ce11529fa70d2292b4e56d143ba and 56e1c6bbe4bb084d7ecf61698afdf70be23dd35f, with EUVD mapping fixes to 7.2.7 and 7.3-rc2; EPSS is 0.14% (3rd percentile), KEV status is not present, and no public exploit was identified at time of analysis.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: update to Linux 7.2.7 or 7.3-rc2 per the EUVD mapping, or apply the stable fixes at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/e0a23e3c8c4c3ce11529fa70d2292b4e56d143ba and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/56e1c6bbe4bb084d7ecf61698afdf70be23dd35f, and see https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-98153 for the CVE record. If immediate patching is not possible, reduce exposure by avoiding NVMe multipath to a shared namespace when FDP is enabled, disabling FDP on the affected subsystem if placement control is not required, or collapsing to a single path to the namespace; each removes the concurrent per-path nvme_query_fdp_info() race but sacrifices FDP functionality, I/O placement benefits, or path redundancy and failover. Because exploitation requires local access, low privileges to induce path scanning, and a narrow timing window, restrict local access to hosts with FDP-capable NVMe multipath and prioritize remediation by actual configuration exposure rather than EPSS alone.

Technical ContextAI · show details

The Linux kernel NVMe driver supports Flexible Data Placement (FDP), exposing placement-ID (PLID) data through per-namespace head structures (head->nr_plids and head->plids). In multipath deployments, nvme_query_fdp_info() runs per path, so two paths scanning the same shared namespace can race while populating those arrays because no locking protects the pair. The root cause is CWE-362, a concurrency race; the fix moves the FDP placement-ID array initialization out of the per-path query path and into nvme_alloc_ns_head(), which is called once per shared namespace. CPE data identifies generic Linux kernel packages (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux), and EUVD lists Linux 6.16 plus commit ranges before e0a23e3c8c4c3ce11529fa70d2292b4e56d143ba and 56e1c6bbe4bb084d7ecf61698afdf70be23dd35f as affected. The authoritative assessment is availability-only (C:N/I:N/A:H); source tags mentioning Information Disclosure should not be read as a confirmed confidentiality impact.

DescriptionNVD

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

nvme: fix racy access to FDP placement id array

nvme_query_fdp_info() is called per-path and therefore prone to races.

It populates head->nr_plids/head->plids for fdp registration. But nothing protects that pair from concurrent access - two paths scanning the same namespace can race to populate it.

Avoid the race by moving this initialization work to nvme_alloc_ns_head() which is called once per shared namespace.

Information disclosure occurs when an application unintentionally exposes sensitive data that aids attackers in reconnaissance or directly compromises security.

Race conditions occur when multiple concurrent requests exploit the brief time gap between checking a condition and acting upon it (TOCTOU - Time of Check, Time of Use).
