Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires the target host to run a userspace application that creates an L2CAP LE listening channel (parent channel) in L2CAP_MODE_EXT_FLOWCTL with FLAG_DEFER_SETUP enabled - this specific, non-default socket configuration is what causes l2cap_le_connect_req() to spawn EXT_FLOWCTL child channels and reach the vulnerable l2cap_ecred_rsp_defer() path. The attacker must be within Bluetooth LE radio range (adjacent, AV:A) and send multiple/duplicate-ident L2CAP_LE_CONN_REQ frames to exceed the unchecked deferred-channel count. Limiting factors: physical Bluetooth proximity, dependence on a victim app using EXT_FLOWCTL + deferred setup (most Bluetooth stacks do not), affected kernels 5.7 through the fixed stable releases, and no user interaction on the attacker side beyond radio-range access. |
| Impact | This is a genuine stack out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel Bluetooth L2CAP LE path, but the real-world priority is moderate, not the 7.5 the CVSS implies. The supplied vector CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H rates all three impacts High, yet the description shows the OOB write is of l2cap_alloc_cid-determined CID values (not attacker-controlled arbitrary data), and the maintainer fix simply replaces the write with WARN_ON_ONCE - consistent with a crash/corruption (availability) outcome rather than a confidentiality leak. The 'Information Disclosure' tag therefore conflicts with the actual defect (an OOB WRITE / CWE-787), and the C:H claim is not well supported. AC:H is credible: exploitation needs a victim application that opens an L2CAP LE listening socket in L2CAP_MODE_EXT_FLOWCTL with FLAG_DEFER_SETUP, plus a burst of connection requests (no deferred-channel cap and no duplicate-ident check) to overflow the array - a non-default, application-specific condition. There is no EPSS score, no CISA KEV listing, and no public exploit referenced, so exploitation status is: no public exploit identified at time of analysis. Net: a real but conditional adjacent-radius memory-safety bug, best treated as a DoS/corruption issue and patched on normal kernel cadence rather than as an emergency. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | A victim device runs a Bluetooth LE application that listens on an L2CAP channel configured for EXT_FLOWCTL with deferred setup. An attacker within Bluetooth radio range sends a stream of crafted L2CAP_LE_CONN_REQ frames (with no duplicate-ident check and no channel cap enforced), driving l2cap_ecred_rsp_defer() to write CID values past a fixed stack array, corrupting the kernel stack and crashing the host. No public exploit code is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
A stack out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel's Bluetooth L2CAP LE connection path lets an attacker within Bluetooth LE radio range corrupt kernel memory by sending L2CAP_LE_CONN_REQ frames - including duplicate identifiers - to a host running a userspace Bluetooth application that listens on an L2CAP LE channel with L2CAP_MODE_EXT_FLOWCTL and FLAG_DEFER_SETUP set. The CVSS base score is 7.5, but the independent assessment rates actual impact as integrity and availability only (no confidentiality impact), gated on that specific, non-default socket configuration, physical radio proximity, and affected kernels from 5.7 onward; no public exploit code has been identified and no active exploitation is confirmed. Unauthenticated (PR:N) adjacent attackers are the relevant threat model per the CVSS vector, and vendor patches are available.
RemediationAI
Apply the vendor-released kernel fixes: upgrade to Linux 7.3-rc2, 7.2.7, 6.18.53, or 6.12.111 (or the corresponding stable backport) using the upstream commits at https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/1074bcc57f741223f9fa82ce6afe5c3d783e4d10, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/5d5a625cbc854d4c4f68e4b16fcf6e682d9a9ed1, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/6cb79e6499228cfdbd4b3301371ce74d01cd2f80, and https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/4ef05db5b08b176a551b4a6287372045998806b0; distro kernels should track their vendor advisory (EUVD-2026-86939 / NVD CVE-2026-98108). Where patching must be deferred, the most effective compensating control is to remove the trigger condition: audit and reconfigure or disable any userspace Bluetooth service that opens an L2CAP LE listening socket with L2CAP_MODE_EXT_FLOWCTL combined with FLAG_DEFER_SETUP, accepting the trade-off that such applications must fall back to a non-deferred, standard-flow-control mode and may lose enhanced credit-based flow control features. Disabling Bluetooth entirely (rfkill block bluetooth) eliminates the attack surface at the cost of all wireless peripheral connectivity, and keeping hosts out of Bluetooth LE radio range of untrusted devices reduces but does not remove exposure since physical proximity is the only prerequisite. Note that the upstream fix turns the memory corruption into a WARN_ON_ONCE, so patched kernels will log a warning rather than corrupt memory if the unusual configuration is still present.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The flaw lives in the LE (Low Energy) branch of the Linux kernel Bluetooth L2CAP subsystem. l2cap_new_connection() normally seeds a new channel's mode from its parent, and l2cap_le_connect_req() left that default untouched, so when the listening parent channel (pchan) was configured in L2CAP_MODE_EXT_FLOWCTL, the derived child channels inherited EXT_FLOWCTL as well. That mode mismatch causes FLAG_DEFER_SETUP channels to answer an incoming L2CAP_LE_CONN_REQ with L2CAP_ECRED_CONN_RSP, which is not the correct response for that request type, and it routes the flow into l2cap_ecred_rsp_defer(). That function neither bounds the number of deferred channels nor rejects duplicate identifiers, so repeated or duplicate-ident LE connection requests drive an out-of-bounds write of values derived from l2cap_alloc_cid into the stack. The upstream fix sets chan->mode explicitly in l2cap_le_connect_req() and adds a channel-mode check in l2cap_ecred_rsp_defer(), converting the OOB write into a WARN_ON_ONCE so the failure is loud rather than corrupting. Affected CPEs map to the Linux kernel (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux), with the EXT_FLOWCTL feature introduced in 5.7 defining the lower bound of exposure.

Lifecycle Timeline
4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
Bluetooth: L2CAP: fix chan mode for LE_CONN_REQ + EXT_FLOWCTL pchan
l2cap_new_connection() sets default value of channel mode to match the parent channel. l2cap_le_connect_req() left this at the default, and created L2CAP_MODE_EXT_FLOWCTL channels if listening pchan has that mode. This causes FLAG_DEFER_SETUP channels to reply to L2CAP_LE_CONN_REQ with L2CAP_ECRED_CONN_RSP, which is incorrect.
It can also result to stack OOB write (of l2cap_alloc_cid determined values) in l2cap_ecred_rsp_defer(), as l2cap_le_connect_req() does not limit maximum number of deferred channels or check for duplicate ident.
Fix by setting chan->mode correctly in l2cap_le_connect_req().
Also check channel mode in l2cap_ecred_rsp_defer(), and do WARN_ON_ONCE instead of OOB write to make it less brittle.
Executive ViewAI
A stack out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel Bluetooth LE L2CAP connection path can let an unauthenticated attacker within Bluetooth LE radio range corrupt kernel memory on affected Linux systems. The organizational risk is highest for fleets running Linux kernel 5.7 or later that expose Bluetooth LE and rely on the specific L2CAP LE channel configuration, because a successful attack could cause availability and integrity problems rather than data theft. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and exploitation requires close physical proximity plus a non-default userspace setup, so leadership should focus on rapid inventory, patching, and physical exposure management.
