The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up.

Exploitation Conditions

Exploitation requires the attacker to cause containerd to execute PullImage on a crafted OCI image whose index graph is malformed to force super-linear CPU/memory work - i.e. the attacker must control or poison an image source the node pulls from (rogue/compromised registry, malicious public image, or an attacker-influenced image reference in a multi-tenant or CI environment). It triggers before container start, so no running workload or authentication to containerd itself is needed, but it is limited to environments that pull untrusted images; clusters that only pull trusted first-party images from controlled registries are effectively not exposed. Impact is availability-only: pod scheduling stalls and, at large graph sizes, node/runtime instability - no confidentiality or integrity effect.

Impact

This is a genuine but bounded-severity availability issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 4.0 vector (AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N) with impact limited to VA:L (no confidentiality or integrity) drives the 6.9 'MEDIUM' score - the only harm is degraded availability (stalled ContainerCreating, at scale node/runtime instability), never code execution or data exposure. No EPSS score, no CISA KEV entry, and no public POC were provided, so exploitation status is 'no public exploit identified at time of analysis'; there is no evidence of active or automatable mass exploitation. The most important nuance the raw CVSS understates is the delivery precondition: although PR:N/UI:N score it as trivially reachable, an attacker must first get the node to pull a maliciously crafted OCI image - i.e. control a registry the victim pulls from, poison an image reference, or otherwise influence PullImage. That real-world gating means impact is realistic mainly in multi-tenant/CI or untrusted-image environments, so prioritize patching where nodes pull images from untrusted or user-supplied sources, and treat it as routine maintenance where all images are first-party and trusted.

Exploit ScenarioDerived

An attacker who can influence what image a node pulls (a rogue/compromised registry, a poisoned public image, or a user-supplied image reference in a multi-tenant cluster) publishes an image whose OCI index graph is crafted to explode parsing cost. When containerd runs PullImage before container start, it consumes very high CPU/memory, stalling pods in ContainerCreating and, at larger sizes, destabilizing the node or runtime. No public POC is referenced, but the network attack vector and low complexity make weaponization straightforward once malicious-image delivery is achieved.

AnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026

Denial of service in containerd versions prior to 1.7.36, 2.0.13, 2.2.9, 2.3.6, and 2.4.1 allows an unauthenticated attacker who controls or poisons an image source to force excessive CPU and memory consumption during PullImage, causing long ContainerCreating stalls and potential node instability at larger graph sizes. The vulnerability is triggered before container start and requires no privileges on containerd itself, but is limited to environments that pull untrusted images; clusters pulling only trusted first-party images are not exposed. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and impact is availability-only with no confidentiality or integrity effect.

RemediationAI

Vendor-released patch: upgrade to containerd 1.7.36, 2.0.13, 2.2.9, 2.3.6, or 2.4.1 as appropriate for your release branch; see the advisory at https://github.com/containerd/containerd/security/advisories/GHSA-pg57-6jwg-q645. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict image pulls to trusted, controlled registries and use admission controllers to block untrusted image references - this may break legitimate workflows that rely on public images. Additionally, enforce resource limits (CPU/memory) on the containerd process and limit concurrent image pulls to reduce the blast radius of a crafted pull; these controls can cause pull failures under load but mitigate node-wide instability. Monitor for excessive PullImage durations as an early indicator.

Technical ContextAI · show details

containerd is a container runtime that implements the OCI image specification. During PullImage, it resolves a remote OCI index - a graph of manifests and platform-specific image manifests - recursively fetching referenced content. CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) is the root cause: a crafted OCI index graph can be constructed with a large number of nested or duplicated references, causing the resolver to perform super-linear CPU and memory work before any container is started. The affected CPE string is cpe:2.3:a:containerd:containerd:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*, indicating all versions prior to the fixed releases. The vulnerability is unauthenticated per the CVSS vector (PR:N) and is limited to availability impact (VA:L in CVSS 4.0; A:L in CVSS 3.1).

DescriptionCVE.org

containerd is an open-source container runtime. Prior to versions 1.7.36, 2.0.13, 2.2.9, 2.3.6, and 2.4.1, a crafted OCI index graph can force very high CPU/memory usage during PullImage (before container start), causing long ContainerCreating stalls and, at larger sizes, node/runtime instability. Versions 1.7.36, 2.0.13, 2.2.9, 2.3.6, and 2.4.1 fix the issue.
