MITRE ATT&CK
1 technique across 1 tactic: Execution The technique list with ATT&CK links and the kill-chain view is part of the Basic plan and up. |
| Exploitation Conditions | Exploitation requires that the host consume an UNTRUSTED overlaybd blob pulled from a registry (i.e. an attacker-controlled or compromised image) AND that the deployment is running MULTIPLE overlaybd-backed containers - this multi-container scenario is the condition explicitly stated in the description and is why Scope is Changed. The malicious blob must contain a crafted LSMT header/trailer whose index_size/index_bytes value triggers the integer overflow in do_load_index during index loading. Limiting factors that reduce real-world risk: overlaybd must actually be in use as the snapshotter/backend (not the default for most container hosts), the attacker must get the victim to load their blob, Attack Complexity is High, and the impact is confined to availability (no confidentiality or integrity loss). Organizations that only pull overlaybd images from trusted, signed sources are not realistically exposed. |
| Impact | This is a genuine but low-to-moderate priority issue, not a top-tier emergency. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 6.8 (Medium) with vector AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:H - critically, impact is Availability-only (C:N/I:N) despite the 'out-of-bounds heap access' wording, meaning the realistic outcome is a crash/denial of service of the overlaybd backend rather than code execution or data disclosure. Attack Complexity is High (AC:H), reflecting that an attacker must craft a malicious LSMT index that triggers the index_bytes integer overflow AND the victim must be running the specific scenario of multiple overlaybd-backed containers consuming an untrusted blob. The Scope:Changed metric is justified: the vulnerable overlaybd service process is distinct from the containers it serves, so a crash can impact co-located containers beyond the one that loaded the malicious blob. No EPSS score, KEV listing, or public POC was provided in the input, and the only references are source files plus the fix (PR #438 and two commits) - so there is no evidence of active exploitation or weaponization. Net: a legitimate supply-chain DoS vector worth patching, but the combination of availability-only impact, high attack complexity, and absence of exploitation signals means it does not warrant emergency prioritization over higher-impact RCE-class issues. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker publishes a malicious overlaybd image/blob to a container registry (or compromises one the victim pulls from). When a host running multiple overlaybd-backed containers loads the crafted LSMT index, the integer overflow on index_bytes in do_load_index triggers an out-of-bounds heap access, crashing the overlaybd backend and denying service to co-located containers (Scope:Changed). No public exploit code was identified at time of analysis; exploitation is High complexity and requires the victim to consume the untrusted blob. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Oct 08, 2026
Integer overflow in containerd overlaybd's LSMT index loader (do_load_index) lets a crafted, untrusted overlaybd blob pulled from a registry corrupt heap state and crash the host-side runtime, degrading availability for all overlaybd-backed containers on the node. Affected are overlaybd builds through 1.0.18 that are actually used as the container snapshotter/backend; exploitation is unauthenticated (CVSS PR:N) but requires high attack complexity (AC:H) - the victim must load an attacker-controlled blob in a deployment running multiple overlaybd-backed containers, which is why Scope is Changed. Impact is availability-only (C:N/I:N/A:H, CVSS 6.8); there is no public exploit identified at time of analysis and no CISA KEV confirmation, and organizations pulling only from trusted, signed sources are not realistically exposed.
RemediationAI
Upstream fix available (PR/commit); released patched version not independently confirmed - apply the changes from https://github.com/containerd/overlaybd/pull/438, specifically commits a536e3341c82517268b5ce32375b36faecb1fb40 and d80c1790920a17e84da025675530624aee753f1b, which add MAX_LSMT_RO_INDEX_SIZE (1,000,000) and MAX_LSMT_INDEX_SIZE (128,000,000) bounds checks in verify_ht/do_load_index and make merge_indexes() failure fatal instead of silent. Because no tagged release version is confirmed in the input data, verify the vendor's release notes for the first overlaybd build containing these commits before relying on a package upgrade. Until patched, the highest-value compensating control is to restrict overlaybd image sources to trusted, signed artifacts (e.g., enforce cosign/Notation signature verification and a curated registry allowlist) so untrusted LSMT headers never reach do_load_index; the trade-off is a loss of ad-hoc image flexibility and added CI signing overhead. Where the multi-container exposure is unacceptable, limit overlaybd to a single trusted tenant per host or run untrusted workloads on hosts that use the default snapshotter - this reduces blast radius but costs density and scheduler complexity. Note there is no exploit-availability data indicating an active campaign, so emergency measures beyond source restriction and prompt patching are not warranted.

Technical ContextAI · show details
overlaybd is a containerd snapshotter that presents OCI images as block devices using a layered image format; its LSMT (Log-Structured Merge Tree) index maps segment offsets into the backing file. The flaw is CWE-190 (Integer Overflow or Wraparound): do_load_index in src/overlaybd/lsmt/file.cpp reads the index_bytes / index_size field from an untrusted blob header or trailer and uses it to size an allocation and subsequent reads without validating it against a maximum. A crafted LSMT header/trailer causes the size arithmetic to overflow, and the resulting undersized buffer is then written past its end - an out-of-bounds heap access. The referenced upstream patch (PR #438) introduces explicit ceiling constants MAX_LSMT_RO_INDEX_SIZE (1,000,000) and MAX_LSMT_INDEX_SIZE (128,000,000) and converts the merge_indexes() path in src/overlaybd/lsmt/index.cpp from void to bool so overflow/size-limit failures propagate as load failures rather than silently proceeding; it also null-checks the read-only index returned by ComboIndex construction. The multi-container condition tied to Scope:Changed reflects that the corrupted index state is shared across overlaybd-backed containers on the affected host rather than confined to the single container that consumed the malicious blob.

Malicious blob arrives over the registry/network (AV:N) with no auth (PR:N); crafting the overflow plus the multi-container precondition make it AC:H; the separate overlaybd process affecting other containers gives S:C with availability-only impact (A:H).

DescriptionCVE.org
containerd overlaybd through 1.0.18 has a do_load_index (LSMT index loading) integer overflow (and resultant out-of-bounds heap access) for index_bytes, if an untrusted overlaybd blob from a registry is used in a scenario with multiple overlaybd-backed containers.

A buffer overflow occurs when a program writes more data to a memory buffer than it was allocated to hold, causing the excess data to spill into adjacent memory regions.
Integer overflow occurs when an arithmetic operation produces a result that exceeds the maximum value a given integer type can store.
