Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires the attacker to supply a maliciously corrupted f2fs filesystem image AND for that image to be mounted and have its inline directories accessed, triggering inline-to-regular dentry conversion (UI:R). Exploitation is LIMITED to local vectors (AV:L): the victim must mount the crafted image (e.g., via USB auto-mount/udisks or an attacker-supplied image in a container/VM), and only f2fs filesystems using inline dentries are affected. It cannot be triggered remotely or against a running trusted filesystem without introducing the malicious image. |
| Impact | This is a filesystem-image-parsing bug (f2fs inline dentry conversion reads past inline filename storage when name lengths aren't validated before copy). The NVD/Linux CVSS 3.1 vector AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H = 7.1 signals local-only, user-interaction-gated exploitation, which is consistent with the description (requires accessing/mounting a corrupted f2fs image). There is NO EPSS score, NO CISA KEV listing, and NO public POC provided - so no signal of real-world exploitation. SSVC-style: exploitation is 'none' observed, not automatable (requires a victim to mount a crafted image), technical impact partial. The C:H rating appears OVERSTATED: an OOB read while building a dentry block most plausibly yields a crash (A:H) or at most a small leak of adjacent kernel memory into the dentry structure, not reliable high-value disclosure - I assess C:L. Net: a genuine memory-safety hardening fix but a LOW real-world priority - no exploitation signal, local access plus user interaction required, and the attack primitive (feeding a corrupted image) is a classic low-yield filesystem fuzzing class. Conflict to verify: the 'Information Disclosure' tag and C:H rating vs. a description that reads as an OOB read that is crash-dominant. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker crafts a corrupted f2fs filesystem image with inline dentry name-length fields that exceed the inline filename area, then gets a victim to mount/access it (e.g., a malicious USB stick auto-mounted, or a container/VM image). During inline-to-regular dentry conversion the kernel copies names before validating their lengths, reading past the inline storage and corrupting or leaking adjacent kernel memory, typically crashing the kernel. No public POC is identified at time of analysis. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Malformed f2fs filesystem images can make the Linux kernel read past the end of its inline filename storage while converting an inline directory into a regular dentry block, disclosing kernel memory contents and potentially crashing the system. The attack path is local and requires user interaction: a victim must mount an attacker-supplied corrupted image (for example via USB auto-mount, a container, or a VM) and then access the affected directory so that the inline-to-regular dentry conversion runs; only f2fs filesystems using inline dentries are affected. No public exploit code and no confirmed active exploitation (not in CISA KEV) were identified at time of analysis, and the risk is concentrated in environments that routinely mount untrusted removable media or filesystem images.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patches are available: update to Linux 6.12.111, 6.18.53 or 7.2 (or a later stable release containing the upstream fix commits 2ce0bc5853bec7cdc724477a87ea579fde664243, 7caa8a0ae94b132576c2e46e9b4fd4e0f356f373 and cfcd0e49a178b3dac2c0ece656079081dbf5da74, see https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/2ce0bc5853bec7cdc724477a87ea579fde664243, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/7caa8a0ae94b132576c2e46e9b4fd4e0f356f373, https://git.kernel.org/stable/c/cfcd0e49a178b3dac2c0ece656079081dbf5da74), or install the equivalent distribution backport; additional context is at https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-93816. Because the bug is only reachable when a crafted f2fs image is mounted and its inline directory is accessed, interim mitigations are to block auto-mounting of removable media by unprivileged users (disable udisks2 auto-mount rules or force an authentication prompt for mounting) at the cost of desktop convenience, to blacklist or refuse to load the f2fs module on hosts that never use f2fs (modprobe.blacklist=f2fs) at the cost of losing f2fs support entirely, and to avoid mounting untrusted images in containers, VMs or from untrusted USB devices. None of these compensating controls fixes a kernel that must mount untrusted f2fs images, so applying the patched release remains the primary remediation.

Technical ContextAI · show details
f2fs stores small directories in an 'inline' form inside the inode's inline data area, using a compact dentry structure (bitmap plus fixed-size filename slots) instead of a full 4 KB dentry block. When a directory grows or must be represented as a regular dentry block, the kernel's conversion path copies each recorded filename out of the inline area into a newly allocated block. In this flaw, the recorded name length (name_len) was copied before being validated against the space actually available in the inline filename area, so a filesystem image with deliberately corrupted inline dentry metadata causes the conversion routine to read beyond the inline filename storage while building the regular block. That is an out-of-bounds read of kernel memory reachable purely by mounting and traversing a crafted image, with the leaked bytes potentially landing in the produced dentry block. No CWE was assigned in the source data, but the root-cause class is improper validation of untrusted on-disk metadata leading to an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125/CWE-20 class); integrity and availability of trusted filesystems are not directly modified, but kernel heap contents can be exposed and the kernel can fault. The issue affects Linux releases carrying f2fs inline-dentry support, recorded from the initial kernel git import commit 1da177e4c3f41524e886b7f1b8a0c1fc7321cac2 across the stable branches fixed by commits 2ce0bc5853bec7cdc724477a87ea579fde664243, 7caa8a0ae94b132576c2e46e9b4fd4e0f356f373 and cfcd0e49a178b3dac2c0ece656079081dbf5da74.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
f2fs: validate inline dentry name lengths before conversion
Inline dentry conversion copies names out of the inline dentry area before checking that each recorded name length fits in the available filename slots.
A corrupted image can therefore make the conversion path read past the inline filename storage while building the regular dentry block.
Validate each inline dentry name length against the inline filename area before copying it.
Executive ViewAI
A high-severity flaw in the Linux kernel's f2fs filesystem handling (CVE-2026-93816) can expose kernel memory and crash systems that mount specially crafted filesystem images, affecting workloads that process untrusted removable media, containers, or VM images. With no public exploit identified at time of analysis and a vendor patch available, the primary business concern is potential confidentiality and availability impact in environments where such media or images are routinely mounted; leadership should prioritize patching and tighten image-mounting policies.
Apply vendor patch.
