Vulnerability Assessment
| Exploitation Conditions | Requires a physical Thunderbolt/USB4 peer connection to the victim host and the Thunderbolt subsystem (thunderbolt driver / XDP cross-domain protocol) to be active - i.e., a laptop or workstation with an enabled TB port. Exploitation further depends on a race window: a remote XDP request (tb_xdp_handle_request) must be processed while the domain is being stopped/released, before the uuid is torn down. Limiting factors: adjacency (attacker must be physically attached over Thunderbolt), high attack complexity (timing-dependent teardown race), and hardware scope limited to Thunderbolt-capable systems. No authentication is required per the CVSS vector (PR:N), but the physical-access and race requirements sharply constrain realistic exploitation. |
| Impact | The input assigns CVSS 3.1 7.5 (AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H), but this vector overstates the real-world impact. The fix simply NULLs tb->root_switch when a Thunderbolt domain is stopped so that tb_xdp_handle_request() returns an error to a remote host instead of dereferencing a stale/torn-down switch pointer - a classic memory-safety hardening (null-deref / potential use-after-free during teardown), not an information-disclosure primitive. The C:H/I:H rating is not supported by the description; the realistic worst case is a kernel crash (DoS). Exploitation signals are weak: no EPSS score, not in CISA KEV, and no public exploit identified. Attack complexity is genuinely high (AC:H) because it depends on a teardown race - a remote XDP request must arrive precisely as the domain is being released - and the attack vector is Adjacent (AV:A) requiring a physical Thunderbolt peer connection, not network reach. Net assessment: a legitimate latent kernel bug worth patching in the normal stable-update cadence, but a LOW real-world priority, not a high-urgency issue despite the 7.5 label. Conflict to note explicitly: the 'Information Disclosure' tag and C:H/I:H metrics conflict with the code change, which is availability/crash-oriented. |
| Exploit ScenarioDerived | An attacker connects a malicious Thunderbolt/USB4 device or host to the victim's Thunderbolt port and issues cross-domain (XDP) protocol requests. If the victim's domain is torn down (cable unplug, suspend, or driver stop) while an XDP request is being handled, the kernel dereferences the freed/stale root_switch, potentially causing a use-after-free or null dereference and a kernel panic. No public exploit code is identified, and the timing-dependent teardown race (AC:H) makes reliable triggering difficult. |

Alert meAnalysisAIv1 – Sep 25, 2026
Improper Thunderbolt domain-teardown handling in the Linux kernel leaves the root-switch pointer (tb->root_switch) referencing a stopped domain, so a Thunderbolt/USB4 peer on the same fabric can race the teardown with an in-flight XDP cross-domain request (tb_xdp_handle_request) and drive the driver into stale-pointer/use-after-free territory that destabilizes or crashes the host. The fix mirrors the firmware connection manager by clearing tb->root_switch when the domain is stopped while deliberately keeping the uuid alive long enough to reply before the domain is fully released. Affected are Thunderbolt-capable Linux systems running unpatched kernels; the scenario is constrained to a physically adjacent attacker with a live Thunderbolt/USB4 link and a timing-dependent window, no public exploit code is identified at time of analysis, and the independent assessment (AV:A/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:H) rates impact as availability-skewed rather than the 7.5 CVSS vector's C:H/I:H/A:H.
RemediationAI
Vendor-released patch: update to Linux 6.12.111 or 6.18.53 (or the corresponding mainline fix identified as 7.2 in EUVD data), applying the stable commits f06e9fbae78a51832211b4495a19412c7d49ecb4, 99f019d2e9eb79adc485fef8aa8ada2cd0c843e9 and e56249d8a68e712f3b60e1f3fdbb5b4fea146468; contact downstream distribution vendors for their kernel update since the CPE is unversioned. If patching cannot be staged immediately, mitigate by removing the attack surface rather than relying on generic hardening: set the firmware Thunderbolt/USB4 security level to 'none' (no peripherals authorized) or disable Thunderbolt/USB4 ports in firmware, blacklist or unbind the thunderbolt module, or if no cross-domain use is needed restrict physical port access - accepting that all of these break legitimate Thunderbolt docks, eGPUs and storage. Enabling the IOMMU in strict mode reduces the blast radius of peer DMA but does not close the specific teardown race, since the flaw is a driver lifetime bug rather than a missing translation boundary; likewise, restricting the machine to trusted peripherals lowers but does not eliminate exposure to a malicious USB4 device.

Technical ContextAI · show details
The Linux Thunderbolt driver implements a connection manager that enumerates and authenticates PCIe/USB4 tunnels over Thunderbolt or USB4 fabrics and exposes a cross-domain protocol (XDP) used by Thunderbolt/USB4 peers to exchange control requests; tb_xdp_handle_request() is the inbound path for those peer requests and dereferences the per-domain tb->root_switch structure. On domain shutdown the driver previously freed/stopped the switch without nulling the pointer, so a remote peer request arriving during the stop/release sequence could dereference a root switch whose backing domain is already being torn down. The upstream change makes stop behavior consistent with the firmware connection manager path, nulling tb->root_switch so tb_xdp_handle_request() returns an error to the remote host, while retaining the domain uuid so replies can still be sent until the whole domain is released. The CPE data (cpe:2.3:a:linux:linux:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*) reflects that this is the mainline Linux kernel package with no version pinning, so the exposure spans all kernels predating the stable fixes; no CWE was assigned by the source, though the root-cause class is a lifetime/stale-pointer defect (in the CWE-416 use-after-free / CWE-476 NULL-pointer family). Exploitation is inherently adjacent (AV:A) and timing-dependent (AC:H) because the attacker must both occupy the Thunderbolt link and land a request inside the teardown race; the tag 'Information Disclosure' is not supported by the authoritative assessment, which assigns confidentiality impact none.

Lifecycle Timeline
4DescriptionCVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
thunderbolt: Set tb->root_switch to NULL when domain is stopped
Similarly what we do with the firmware connection manager. This makes tb_xdp_handle_request() return error to the remote host. However, we need to make sure we keep the uuid alive so that we can reply until the whole domain is released.
Executive ViewAI
A Linux kernel flaw in Thunderbolt/USB4 domain teardown (CVE-2026-97508) exposes Thunderbolt-equipped systems to host crashes or destabilization by a physically adjacent, unauthenticated attacker with a live Thunderbolt link. Organizations running unpatched Linux on Thunderbolt-capable laptops or workstations in physically accessible areas should treat this as an availability risk, although the attack requires a live connection and a timing-dependent race. No public exploit identified at time of analysis, and patch available per vendor advisory makes remediation straightforward.
